If you find yourself in this situation, this leaflet will<br />

guide you through what you need to do in order to<br />

claim benefit and seek advice. You should also let<br />

your Income Officer know immediately by telephoning<br />

0800 389 3576 so we are aware of your situation.


IMPORTANT:<br />

On the first day of unemployment or if you are already unemployed, you should<br />

telephone the Jobcentre Plus on 0800 055 6688 (text phone 0800 023 4888). 8am – 6pm,<br />

Monday to Friday.<br />

Q: Who should telephone the Jobcentre<br />

Plus?<br />

A: The person making the claim<br />

Q: How long will the call take?<br />

A: Approximately 40 minutes<br />

Q: How much will it cost?<br />

A: Free, if you are using a landline. If<br />

using a mobile please refer to your<br />

provider.<br />

Q: What information will I need to have<br />

available?<br />

A: You will need the following:<br />

l Your National Insurance number<br />

l Details of your rent or mortgage<br />

l Details of past and present<br />

employment<br />

l Details of any other income and<br />

savings<br />

Q: What happens next?<br />

A: The operator will explain this to<br />

you and you may need to attend an<br />

appointment at your nearest Jobcentre<br />

Plus.<br />

Q: What benefits will I be eligible for?<br />

A: This is dependent on your current<br />

finances, you may be eligible to receive<br />

benefits such as:<br />

l Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)<br />

l <strong>Housing</strong> benefit<br />

l Council Tax benefit<br />

l Interest Relief on your mortgage<br />

l Free schools meals for your children<br />

l Help with National Health Service<br />

(NHS) costs<br />

Q: What should I do if I am currently<br />

claiming Working Tax Credits?<br />

A: You should inform Tax Credits of<br />

your <strong>redundancy</strong>, as entitlement to this<br />

Working Tax Credit will end (although<br />

some people carry on receiving it up<br />

to four weeks after their job ends). Any<br />

entitlement to Child Tax Credits should<br />

continue. Opening hours are 8am – 8pm,<br />

7 days a week excluding Christmas Day,<br />

Boxing Day and New Years Day.<br />

Q: Will my State Retirement Pension and<br />

Occupational Pension be affected by my<br />

Redundancy?<br />

A: No, you will still get your pension<br />

when you reach retirement age or when<br />

your employment contract says you will<br />

as your National Insurance contributions<br />

will continue as long as you qualify for<br />

benefits.<br />
