Only students who are present from the first day on can attend the intensive German course and<br />

participate in the following basic level course during the semester.<br />

4. Orientation Program for students who do not participate in the intensive German course<br />

We expect of our visiting program students who do not attend the intensive German course to<br />

participate in our orientation program previous to the lecture period. The program of the winter<br />

semester is a three-day seminar which offers important information about studying in <strong>Stuttgart</strong>. The<br />

seminar will be on campus. Application forms are available from the Office of International Affairs, e-<br />

mail: incoming@ia.uni-stuttgart.de. In spring we offer a welcome week where students receive useful<br />

information at the IA individually. Both orientation programs in the winter and summer semester will be<br />

completed by a one-day excursion.<br />

5. Accommodation<br />

The Office of International Affairs can arrange housing for the exchange students in student dorms on<br />

request. For the housing application form please contact the IA, incoming@ia.uni-stuttgart.de. Please<br />

hand in your housing application together with your other application documents until July 15 th (winter<br />

semester) or January 15 th (summer semester). As the allocation of dormitory rooms is done by the<br />

Studentenwerk (organisation managing the dormitories) we do not have any influence over the location<br />

or the exact price category of the allocated rooms. Prices vary from 220 to 300 Euros. Be aware that<br />

your application is binding, should you withdraw less than 30 days before the contract is due to begin,<br />

you will have to pay the first month’s rent.<br />

6. Health Insurance<br />

In Germany by law a proof of health insurance must be provided. Non-EU citizens have to purchase a<br />

student health insurance in Germany upon arrival. Otherwise you will not receive your residence permit.<br />

Further information will be provided by the IA after your arrival. If you participate in the intensive<br />

German course previous to the lecture period, we strongly recommend you to take out travel insurance<br />

for the period of March or September.<br />

7. Visa Regulations<br />

Students from the EU, Australia, Canada, Japan and the US can enter Germany without a visa. They<br />

have to apply for a residence permit after their arrival in <strong>Stuttgart</strong>.<br />

Students from non-EU countries other than mentioned above have to apply for a visa at the German<br />

consulate of their home country approximately 6 months previous to their arrival in <strong>Stuttgart</strong>.<br />

8. Academic Calendar<br />

Winter semester: October 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009<br />

Lecture period in the winter semester: October 13, 2008 to February 14, 2009<br />

Summer semester: April 1, 2009 to September 30, 2009<br />

Lecture period in the summer semester: April 20 to July 24, 2009<br />

Be aware, you may have exams during the lecture free period!<br />

Christmas vacation: Tue, December 22, 2008 to Mon, January 5, 2009
