2012-13 is the 86th Season for High School Golf
Since 1928 the IHSAA has sponsored a State Golf Tournament thus making the 2012 State Meets the 85th in
the history of the organization.
The State Meet went to two classes in 1959, and to three in 1977. A fourth class was started 1982. From 1986-
1993 schools could also play for a State Fall Championship, but in 1994 the Class 4A schools could only compete
in the fall. From 1928-until 1975, the State Meet was one day - 18 holes with the exception of the Fall of
1940 and the Spring of 1942 tournaments. Since 1975 the tournament has been a two-day, 36-hole event unless
abbreviated by the weather. The number of players on a team have changed slighlty start with 5 and scoring the
four lowest to six-man teams with the lowest 5 scores (per day) counting.
Our research continues as we endeavor to expand this book from previous years. We are still seeking
player’s names especially those of championship teams from 1928-1944. There were two separate State
Tournaments in 1940 and 41 - one on the spring and the other in the fall.
With this edition of the Golf Stat Book, there have been some changes involving Fall Golf. In past years
the Fall Golf had been placed in the calendar year that it was played. Now this book has Fall Golf, which
started in 1986, is listed in the school year that it was played. Hopefully this clarifies questions concerning
the age, grade of the athletes and brings this book into concert with other IHSAA publications.
On a another note, we believe that Centerville’s Alex Moorman, the 2012 Class 3A champion, is the first
ninth grader to win medalist honors in the State Tournament. There were at least two others that tied but
both lost in a playoff. If any reader knows of a freshman who was a State medalist please contact Bud
Legg at the email address below.
It is always the goal with all of our publications to be as accurate as possible. If you discover an error in
accuracy or spelling, please contact Bud Legg (blegg@iahsaa.org).
