FORMER IOWA PREPS SPARKLE ON PROFESSIONAL TOUR EVENTS Iowa high school golf programs have produced many outstanding players. Several have gone on to become great amateur players in the state and others enjoyed great professional careers. Four Iowans have won at least one USGA tour event. As of July 2012, they are: * Zach Johnson, 1994 graduate of Cedar Rapids Regis. He was the first Iowan to ever win the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, GA where he won by two strokes over a field that included the legendary Tiger Woods and the top 96 players in the world, April 5-8, 2007. His first PGA tour win came on April 4, 2004 in the Bell South Classic in Duluth, Ga. In 2006, he became the first Iowan ever to be named to the prestigious U.S. Ryder Cup team, an accomplishment he has repeated. He was the number two scorer on Regis’ 1992 State 3-A Championship team and the Regals’ 1992 State Fall 4-A Runner-up squad. * Jack Fleck, 1939 Davenport graduate. He defeated the immortal Ben Hogan in an 18-hole play-off to win the 1955 U.S. Open at Olympic Country Club in San Francisco. The feat has been called one of the sports greatest upsets. He also finished third in the 1960 U.S. Open. He also finished in a tie for 11th in the 1962 Masters - the highest finish by an Iowan prior to Zach Johnson’s win in 2007. His U.S. Open victory and Johnson’s Masters title are the crown jewel of tournaments won by a native Iowan. Two other Iowans who won on the professional tour include: Jack Rule, 1956 graduate of Waterloo West. Twice a state meet medalist in 1955 and 1956, after being a runner-up medalist as a freshman in 1953, he was also a member of West’s 1954, 1955, and 1956 championship teams. He won on the PGA tour in 1963 capturing the St. Paul Open and in 1965 winning the Oklahoma City Open. Steve Spray, 1959 Indianola graduate, who was a State Meet medalist runner-up and won a tour event in 1969 taking the San Francisco Open after being fifth in the 1968 U.S. Open. Other former Iowa preps who have played well on tour events include Dave Rummells of West Branch, who was the medalist at the 1975 and 1976 Class A State Meets and who was 24th on the PGA money list in 1989, a year which saw him finish fifth in the PGA after being sixth in 1988- two of his 21 top- ten finishes on the tour. After playing on the PGA Tour early in his career Lon Nielsen, Belle Plaine, has several titles and top 10 finishes and is a top money winner on the Seniors’ Champion Tour since 2004. Jerry Smith of Oskaloosa, 1979 runner-up and 1982 medalist, also played well in tour events. HOLE-IN-ONE REPORTED IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY The IHSAA is archiving those players who recorded a hole-in-one during State Championship play. The following have been verified. 1965 - Jim Brousard, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, at Finkbine, Iowa City - a 7 iron on 165 yds. No. 17 (Note - Cedar Rapids Jefferson won the state title; Brousard later coached Ames to the 1986 state title) 1983 - Al Olson, Calamus, at the Championship Course at Lake Panorama, Panora - 170 yds. No. 16 (Note - Calamus was the 1A Champion for the second straight year ) 2006 - Quincy Law, Clear Lake, at Oneota Golf & Country Club - Decorah, No. 16, 235 yds. (Note: Clear Lake won the Class 3A State Title) 2009 - Nathan Zimmerman, Treynor, at Spring Valley Golf Club near Livermore on No. 3, 142 yds. (Note: Treynor was runner-up in Class 1A) 2010-F - Spencer Jones, Davenport North, at The Harvester Golf Club, Rhodes - 165 yds. No. 8 (Note: Jones was an individual State Meet qualifier from the District) 2011- Joe Weber, No University High, Cedar Falls, at Championship Course, Lake Panorama - 165 yds. No. 3 (Note: Weber was the State Meet Runner-up Medalist) 2012-F - Dom Sorrentino, Ames, at Tournament Club of Iowa, Polk City - 231 yd., No. 16 (Note: Sorrentino’s ace is the second longest in State Tournament play) [39]
