The English Baccalaureate (EBacc)
At IAMS
What is the EBacc?
Academic subjects are the foundation of the curriculum
here at IAMS, and the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is a
new qualification offered as a precursor to studying A-
levels.
The EBacc is awarded to pupils who achieve a grade A*
to C in all the following GCSE subjects:

Maths
But I don’t know what I want to study at
college?
If like many other Year 9 students in the country,
you don’t know yet what direction you want
to take at college, but you have demonstrated
the ability to do well in English, Mathematics,
Science, Humanities and a Language, The
EBacc pathway will keep your options open
when you finally come to making your choice.

English

Science

French and/or Spanish and/or a community language
History and /or geography
What if the EBacc is not for me?
Next step:
Who is the EBacc for?
At IAMS, all students follow an academic core GCSE
pathway and then have an enrichment of a choice of
subjects including those from the Arts and Media
field.
Students who are doing well academically should consider
studying A-levels at college. It this is an aspiration, you
should select your options carefully as the college is likely
to ask for the EBacc for entry onto more competitive
courses.
If you are not a student for whom the EBacc is
appropriate, there are still plenty of other
options open to you at IAMS , that will lead you
into a further education pathway that suits
you.
All students at IAMS are entitled to a place at
City and Islington college. You can contact
them directly to learn about courses or contact
the IAMS careers advisor, Truman Lawson
(contact details on the reverse).
In the Spring term there will be an
information evening where you will have the
opportunity to discuss how choices made
will affect your future. With this information,
you will be then asked to select your
options. Your teachers will guide you
through the process to help you make the
best choices. If you have chosen the EBacc,
we will provide you with all the support you
need to ensure success at the end of year
