A factory has been established at Trenton,<br />
N. J., to manufacture a new boiler stoker,<br />
the invention <strong>of</strong> Frank J. Wetzel, <strong>of</strong> York,<br />
Pa., who will be in charge <strong>of</strong> the plant.<br />
An Indiana inventor is exhibiting to railroad<br />
<strong>of</strong>ficials a double deck stock car, in<br />
which the middle floor can be raised to the<br />
ro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> the car, leaving it a single deck.<br />
A unique apparatus, 'a track-laying machine,<br />
is attracting much attention in Morgan<br />
township, Ohio. It is the invention <strong>of</strong><br />
H. E. Hurley, who has spent ten years in<br />
perfecting it.<br />
Alex. McLaren, <strong>of</strong> Foit Worth, Texas, is<br />
the inventor <strong>of</strong> an attachment to a selfbinder<br />
that will gather up the bundles <strong>of</strong><br />
wheat as the same comes from the pinder<br />
and shock them in the field.<br />
Jean B. Dandelin. Fall River, Mass., has<br />
procured a patent for improvement in shuttles<br />
and shuttle eyes. The device is said to<br />
do away with the necessity <strong>of</strong> sticking the<br />
thread through the eye.<br />
H. A. Ship, the inventor <strong>of</strong> the boot hook,<br />
sold his patent outright for £50, and is now<br />
ending his days in the almshouse. The<br />
purchasers are said to have made more thau<br />
£250,000 (about $1,000,000).<br />
Au inventor <strong>of</strong> Stockholm has constructed<br />
a machiue which takes 20,000 herrings an<br />
hour, as they come from the net, sorts them<br />
into the four sizes required hy the trade,<br />
scrapes <strong>of</strong>f their scales, cuts <strong>of</strong>f their heads,<br />
splits, cleans aud washes them inside and<br />
out. This seems to be a fish story.<br />
An invention for manufacturing gas out<br />
<strong>of</strong> chalk has been tried in Sussex, England,<br />
with surprising success. To every hundred<br />
tons <strong>of</strong> chalk about ten tons <strong>of</strong> coke or coke<br />
breeze is mixed, aqd from this it is claimed<br />
10,500,000 cubic f~et <strong>of</strong> gas is obtained.<br />
A Michigan inventor obtained a patent 011<br />

ment brick, which prOvides a. simple and<br />
effective means for forming and pressing<br />
brick <strong>of</strong> artificial stone' firmly and compactly,<br />
turning them out without blemish,<br />
rapidly and cheaply.<br />
A new folding table, which is adapted to<br />
rest on trunks, chairs, and like supports,<br />
and which, when folded, can easily be<br />
carried in a trunk, has been patened by a<br />
New York inventor. This table will undoubtedly<br />
fill a long-felt want for traveling<br />
salesmen, students, etc.<br />
Charles Miller, engineer on the Black<br />
Diamond Express, has invented a device<br />
which is being tellted on the Reading sys·<br />
tem for automatically stopping trains when<br />
danger signals are displayed. Trains running<br />
at the rate <strong>of</strong> fifty miles an hour were<br />
stopped within one hundrea yards.<br />
The <strong>International</strong> Sleeping Car Company<br />
has given orders for building an electric<br />
autocar, which will soon be running upon<br />
the Belgian State Railroad, between Brus-<br />
, sels and Ostend. The distance <strong>of</strong> seventyeight<br />
and one-dghth miles will be covered,<br />
it stated, in less than an hour. The car will<br />
