SCHNABEL: <strong>John</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Future</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> 271<br />
come <strong>the</strong> pressures to con<strong>for</strong>m to pagan society on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> efficacy<br />
<strong>of</strong> Christ's death <strong>and</strong> "by <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir testimony," willing<br />
to sacrifice <strong>the</strong>ir lives in <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> death (12:11). They are those who<br />
are written in <strong>the</strong> book <strong>of</strong> life (20:12, 15; 21:27). They have overcome<br />
<strong>the</strong> temptation to compromise in <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> tribulation that was a reality<br />
in <strong>the</strong> first century <strong>and</strong> that will end only when Jesus returns<br />
(21:7). They belong to <strong>the</strong> bride <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lamb (21:9). They are <strong>the</strong> servants<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lamb (22:3) who keep <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prophecy <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>John</strong>'s book (22:7). They are those who continue to be righteous <strong>and</strong><br />
holy, separated from <strong>the</strong> evildoers <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> filthy (22:11). They are<br />
those who continue to be faithful to <strong>the</strong>ir commitment to Jesus Christ<br />
<strong>and</strong> his saving work (22:14). They are those who have responded to<br />
<strong>the</strong> call to come to Jesus, who thirst <strong>for</strong> full fellowship with God, who<br />
have received, by faith, <strong>the</strong> eternal life that God in his grace <strong>of</strong>fered<br />
in Jesus Christ (22:17). The inhabitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Jerusalem are<br />
those who live in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> "<strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord Jesus" that<br />
will be with <strong>the</strong>m always (22:21).
