Thangka,is a uniquely Tibetan art form of painting on a cloth support, framed by silk<br />

borders. The Education Unit of the CSMVS Museum Art Conservation Centre is<br />

conducting a pilot workshop on conservation of <strong>thangka</strong> paintings, <strong>and</strong> then lead on<br />

to longer <strong>courses</strong> on Thangka conservation.<br />

In this workshop each participant will be able to share various developments in the<br />

field of Thangka Paintings’ condition assessment, documentation, conservation <strong>and</strong><br />

display<br />

A compilation of notes on various aspects of Thangka Painting Conservation.<br />

MISSION STATEMENT<br />

The CSMVS Museum Art Conservation Centre (MACC), Mumbai<br />

aims to spearhead heritage conservation-restoration, R&D <strong>and</strong> <strong>training</strong> activities<br />

in India, as well as in other nations in the region, <strong>and</strong> will encourage<br />

collaborations <strong>and</strong> share conservation expertise through its interlinked units<br />

(i) Conservation Status Reports Unit; (ii) Conservation-Restoration Unit; (iii)<br />

Technical Support Unit; (iv) Education Unit; (v) Documentation Unit; (vi) Research<br />

& Development Unit<br />

Present Facilities<br />

The Museum Art Conservation Centre (MACC) is housed in an area of 4000 sq ft<br />

in the Kalaghoda art district of Mumbai. The facility has a climate controlled<br />

environment <strong>and</strong> round the clock CCTV surveillance. MACC offers its conservation,<br />

research <strong>and</strong> documentation services to various museums, cultural institutions <strong>and</strong><br />

private collectors. The facility is manned by a team of dedicated art conservatorsrestorers<br />

<strong>and</strong> support teams who are trained to conserve art objects of various<br />

materials <strong>and</strong> technologies.<br />

MACC's Technical Support, Research & Development Units provide technical<br />

support to various institutions <strong>and</strong> are well equipped <strong>and</strong> manned to undertake<br />

various diagnostic examinations including microscopy, spectrometry, fluorescence,<br />

X-Ray, 3D imaging, <strong>and</strong> other art analyses.<br />

MACC's Education Unit imparts <strong>training</strong> in conservation-restoration <strong>and</strong> related<br />

fields. In affiliation with the University of Mumbai it conducts <strong>courses</strong> in PG Diploma<br />

in Museology <strong>and</strong> Conservation <strong>and</strong> is now developing a Certificate Programme for<br />

Undergraduates as well as a Masters Programme in Art Conservation. It regularly<br />

conducts <strong>workshops</strong>, <strong>training</strong> programmes, conferences <strong>and</strong> lectures. The<br />

Education Unit also serves as a Coordination Unit for various conferences <strong>and</strong><br />

Seminars. It successfully coordinated the Commonwealth Association of Museums<br />

Conference in June 2010 that was attended by 110 delegates. Its first workshop<br />

‘CUSTODIANS EMPOWERED’ on Conservation of Manuscripts <strong>and</strong> Archival<br />

Documents, was held on November 23-25, 2010. The unit also conducts active<br />

sessions for the Post Graduate Diploma in Museology <strong>and</strong> Art Conservation.<br />
