If <strong>the</strong>re is enough time, ask groups to discuss how to stop or reduce stigma in relation to different<br />

categories of stigmatized groups (i.e., women, men, children, etc). Assign each group to focus on<br />

one category.<br />

5. SUMMARY: <strong>Stigma</strong> has a range of different effects <strong>–</strong> on people living with <strong>HIV</strong>, <strong>the</strong>ir families,<br />

communities <strong>and</strong> health institutions.<br />

<strong>Stigma</strong> <strong>and</strong> gender violence divide families <strong>and</strong> communities <strong>–</strong> <strong>the</strong>y create conflict <strong>and</strong><br />

breakdown in communication.<br />

<strong>Stigma</strong> <strong>and</strong> gender violence can result in economic losses, making families <strong>and</strong> communities<br />

poorer.<br />

The shame of stigma affects everyone <strong>–</strong> <strong>the</strong> person living with <strong>HIV</strong>, his family, <strong>the</strong> community,<br />

<strong>and</strong> even health workers who care for him.<br />

Gender violence harms women, families, children <strong>and</strong> communities, <strong>and</strong> puts women <strong>and</strong> men<br />

at greater risk of <strong>HIV</strong> infection.<br />

<strong>Stigma</strong> results in denial <strong>–</strong> people refusing to admit that <strong>the</strong>re is any problem. Gender violence<br />

is also often denied or viewed as a norm, ra<strong>the</strong>r than a problem that must be dealt with.<br />
