Category 3, 5, 5e, 6 and 7 Copper Cables
All Siemon 4-pair cables satisfy both ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A and
ISO/IEC 11801 category transmission requirements. In instances
where there is a conflict in standards performance specifications,
Siemon 4-pair cables satisfy the more stringent requirements. In
accordance with industry trends, all Siemon multi-pair cables
satisfy ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A category transmission requirements.
Our cables are available for use in plenum, riser, general purpose
(IEC 332.1), LS0H/IEC 332.3c, and LS0H/IEC 332.1
environments.
In addition to the parameters specified in ’568-A and ‘11801, our
cables also satisfy performance requirements for the additional
parameters of: propagation delay, delay skew (per TIA/EIA-568-A-
1), and balance (Longitudinal Conversion Loss). All of our
category 5e cables satisfy the power sum NEXT, ELFEXT, and
power sum ELFEXT requirements of SP-4195-B (proposed
addendum 5 to ‘568-A) and FDAM 3 (proposed amendment 2 to
‘11801).
A note about standards:
Category 3: ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A and ISO/IEC 11801 specify
category 3 requirements for 4-pair and multi-pair cable.
Category 5: ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A and ISO/IEC 11801 specify
category 5 requirements for 4-pair and multi-pair cable. Since the
drafting of the proposed category 5e requirements for 4-pair
cables, the ‘568-A and ‘11801 category 5 requirements are only
applicable for the specification of multi-pair horizontal and
backbone cable performance.
Category 5e: Proposed addendum 5 to ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A
specifies enhanced category 5 performance requirements. These
requirements are recommended for new 4-pair category 5 cabling
installations and are expected to become the de facto minimum
standard for category 5 cabling. To ensure additional crosstalk
headroom for robust applications support, it also specifies power
sum performance requirements for category 5e cables and
cabling. This document specifies performance for 4-pair cables
only (i.e. category 5e is not applicable for multi-pair cable
specification).
Category 6/Class E: This is a new performance range for
unshielded and screened twisted-pair cabling. Category 6/Class
E is intended to specify the best performance that UTP and ScTP
cabling solutions can be designed to deliver. It is anticipated that
category 6/class E components and cable will be characterized
over the frequency range of at least 1-250 MHz. The Siemon
company is actively involved in the development of these industry
standards and has developed the System 6 SM solution to
guarantee future category 6/class E applications support.
Category 7/Class F: Proposed category 7/class F describes a
new performance range for fully shielded twisted-pair cabling.
Even though these requirements are expected to be supported by
an entirely new interface design (i.e., plug and socket), category
7/class F will be backward compatible which means that
applications running on lower categories/classes would also be
supported.

*Article 800 of the National Electrical Code specifies fire resistance levels for communication cable for premise installations.
**Equivalent NEC rating.
Notes:
1. Cables with a higher fire resistance rating may be substituted for cables with a lower fire resistance rating
(i.e. a plenum cable may be used for a riser application).
2. Cables rated CM are specified by NEC 800-53 for cables penetrating one floor.
3. LS0H cables satisfy an equivalent NEC fire resistance rating of CM or CMX.
4. Utilization of proper firestopping technologies and procedures are strongly recommended regardless of cable
rating. Follow applicable local and/or national codes.
Fiber Optic Cables
Network designs utilizing the advantages offered by optical fiber
are evolving rapidly and the cabling segment of those networks
is the heart of the system. The Siemon Company supplies fiber
optic cables that enable network designers to maximize the
potential that this media can bring to the performance of the
cabling system that integrates data, voice, and video
transmission. The optical performance, durability,
environmental resistance, and overall quality of our cables are
second-to-none. And the available cable construction variants
encompass usage both between and within buildings that are
being cabled for the twenty-first century.
Cables for indoor use are designed with a distribution-style
construction that consists of a 900 micron buffer which is tightly
formed onto the coated fibers. These buffered fibers are
surrounded by strength members made from aramid yarn and
then jacketed with a material that is rugged, yet flexible. Higher
fiber counts are bundled into multi-fiber sub-units for easier
identification and increased fiber protection during storage,
installation, and termination.
Cables designed for outdoor use are constructed with coated
fibers that are surrounded by a moisture-proof gel within rugged,
stress-resistant tubes that are then surrounded by an outer
jacket for additional protection from the elements.
Fibers are bundled within the loose tubes or flexible sub-units in
multiples of four, six or eight to enable usage in all global
markets.
The Siemon Company offers riser and plenum-rated cables plus
low smoke, zero halogen cables that have been designed for the
ever increasing demand for safe, non-toxic premise
installations. These cable material options allow you to make
the choices you need in order to meet international standards
for toxicity, corrosion resistance, low smoke emission, or flame
retardance while maintaining outstanding mechanical integrity
and optical transmission performance. All cables meet or
exceed the applicable requirements of ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-A and
ISO/IEC 11801.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Horizontal Cabling System Structure
The horizontal cabling system extends from the telecommunications outlet in the work area to the horizontal cross-connect in the
telecommunications closet. It includes the telecommunications outlet, an optional consolidation point or transition point connector, horizontal cable,
and the mechanical terminations and patch cords (or jumpers) that comprise the horizontal cross-connect.
APPLICATION
Notes:
* An allowance of 10m (33 ft.) has been
provided for the combined length of
patchcords/cross-connect jumpers and
equipment cables/cords in the HC,
including the WA equipment cords.
* In ISO/IEC 11801, the equivalent
cabling element to the horizontal crossconnect
(HC) is called the floor
distributor (FD).
Customer Premises Equipment
HC Equipment Cord
Patchcords/cross-connect jumpers used in the HC, including
equipment cables/cords, should not exceed 6m (20 ft.)
Note: ISO/IEC 11801 specifies a max. patchcord/cross-connect length
of 5m (16.4 ft.), which does not include equipment cables/cords.
Horizontal cable 90m (295 ft.) max. total
TP or CP (optional)
Telecommunications outlet/connector (TO)
WA Equipment cord
Note: An allowance is made for WA equipment cords of 3m (9.8 ft.)
Some points specified for the horizontal cabling subsystem include:
• Recognized Horizontal Cables:
4-pair 100 Ω unshielded twisted-pair
