Course Outlines<br />
The course covers the basic underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the information which can appear in a welding symbol, the<br />
identification <strong>of</strong> basic weld symbols, the use <strong>of</strong> supplementary symbols, <strong>and</strong> an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the<br />
terminology associated with the basic welding symbols. It is essential that the Resident Engineer (RE) <strong>and</strong><br />
Resident Technical Officer (RTO) who are involved in the welded construction to be familiar with the<br />
welding <strong>and</strong> testing symbols used in the drawings <strong>and</strong> applicable documents. The following topics will be<br />
discussed :<br />
● <strong>Welding</strong> symbols elements<br />
● Weld symbol locations<br />
● Multiple reference lines<br />
● Combined weld symbols<br />
● Supplementary symbols<br />
● Weld symbol dimensioning<br />
● Fillet <strong>and</strong> groove weld symbols<br />
● Weld size <strong>and</strong> depth <strong>of</strong> bevel considerations<br />
● Flare groove welds<br />
Objectives<br />
At the end <strong>of</strong> this module the Resident Engineer (RE) <strong>and</strong> Resident Technical Officer (RTO) would be able to<br />
interpret welding symbols in the drawings <strong>and</strong> communicate effectively with the various people involved in<br />
the design <strong>and</strong> fabrication work through the use <strong>of</strong> proper welding <strong>and</strong> testing symbols.<br />
PROFILE OF SPEAKER<br />
Mr Sze Thiam Siong is the Director/General Manager <strong>of</strong> SETSCO, an established testing,<br />
inspection, training <strong>and</strong> consultancy firm. He holds a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Engineering (B.Eng) Degree<br />
<strong>and</strong> is a qualified trainer for the American <strong>Welding</strong> Society (AWS) Certified <strong>Welding</strong> Inspector<br />
(CWI) Program. He is currently the Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Technical Committee on Non-Destructive<br />
<strong>Testing</strong> (NDT), Member <strong>of</strong> Technical Committee on Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency <strong>Testing</strong> <strong>and</strong> Member <strong>of</strong><br />
Council Committee for Inspection Bodies (CCIB) <strong>and</strong> Member <strong>of</strong> Working Group for Structural<br />
Steelwork Inspection <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Singapore</strong> Accreditation Council (SAC). He is a Member <strong>of</strong><br />
Technical Committee on Building Structure <strong>and</strong> Sub-structure <strong>of</strong> Spring <strong>Singapore</strong>. He is the<br />
2 nd Vice-President, Chairman <strong>of</strong> Education/Training Committee <strong>and</strong> NDT Certification<br />
Committee <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Welding</strong> Society (SWS). He has worked many years in the<br />
industry <strong>and</strong> has extensive experience in the field <strong>of</strong> welding inspection involving pipelines,<br />
pressure vessels, structural steelworks <strong>and</strong> equipment. He lectures regularly at the various<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations such as <strong>Singapore</strong> Structural Steel Society (SSSS), <strong>Singapore</strong><br />
Quality Institute (SQI), <strong>Singapore</strong> <strong>Welding</strong> Society (SWS) <strong>and</strong> BCA Academy.
