I would like to express my appreciation for those individuals who aided me in
completing this thesis. To my Committee Chair, advisor and mentor, without you Dr.
Fallwell, this thesis was not possible. I sincerely thank you for all of the guidance and
support you have given me throughout this process, and today I am confident in my skills
as a better researcher and scholar due to your efforts and wisdom that you have shared
with me over these past years. To my committee, Dr. Gretchen Adams, Dr. Alan
Barenberg, and Dr. Anita McChesney, I want to thank each of you for all of your advice,
wisdom and support. Next, I would like to thank the Department of History at Texas
