Roll out the ball FROM STAFF REPORTS Even indoors, area sports teams weren’t completely free from disruptions caused by the thunderstorms that passed through Northwest Georgia on Thursday evening. While Northwest Whitfield’s varsity volleyball team was able to wait out a slight delay on its way toa non-region victory at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Dalton’s home opener against Southeast was spoiled by a power outage that stopped the match in the second game after alight caught fire in the Cats’ Den. The Lady Catamounts won the first game 25-22, but trailed the Lady Raiders 17-12 in the second when that happened. “You could hear thunder outside and then aset of lights went out,” Dalton coach Lisa Donahue said. “We tried to get them back on and, all of a sudden, one of the lights started smoking and then it started flaming.” It was unlike anything Donahue is able to recall happening in 25 years of playing and coaching volleyball, she said, and Southeast coach Jake Dickey had asimilar impression. “It was pretty crazy,” Dickey said. “There was a good flame coming from it for awhile, but they turned out the rest of the lights and the fire stopped. Iguess it was an electrical-type deal.” The match will be picked up where it left off at5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. ■ Northwest volleyball coach Richard Taylor is finding his options plentiful this season, thanks to an experienced lineup, the increased leadership shown by middle ➣ Please see PREP, 2B North Murray eyes first softball tilt on Aug. 24 BY LARRY FLEMING larryfleming@daltoncitizen.com Lestine Hensley enjoyed coaching softball and nourishing the relationship between herself and players at Bagley Middle School so much that she went after — and got — the head coaching job at North Murray High School, a first-year school in Chatsworth. “I coached at Bagley for six Hensley years,” Hensley said. “A big reason Iwanted this job was mygirls were going to be here.” So, coach and players are still together,about to embark on starting a new program. Had the schedule not needed an adjustment when acouple of opposing teams changed up on them, the Lady Mountaineers would have opened their inaugural season this past Tuesday. Anderson started in left field Thursday night and struck out in the first inning. He did not appear to be hurt walking back to the dugout, but was replaced in the field for the second inning by rookie Reid Gorecki. The 37-year-old Anderson got off toaslow start in his first season with the Braves, butisbatting .284 with 11 homers and 44 RBIs. On May 10 he was batting .191. Since then, he’s has hit .298, with all 11 of his homers and 44 of his 47 RBIs. The Braves said the threetime All-Star is listed as day to day. The 28-year-old Gorecki made his big league debut Monday night against Arizona. Gorecki grew upinQueens, not far from the Mets’ ballpark — Shea Stadium — and had his first career hit against NewYork on Wednesday night.
