UCLA stops Volunteers late
By The Associated Press
Even with offensive guru
Norm Chow in the press box,
UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel
turned to his defense with the
game on the line.
It was the right call.
UCLA stopped Tennessee’s
Montario Hardesty on fourthand-2
in the closing minutes,
and the Bruins made it two in
a row against the Volunteers
with a 19-15 victory Saturday.
“We will be a better offense,”
Neuheisel said. “But given the
way our offense was playing, I
thought it was better to put it
in (the defense’s) hands.”
Trailing by 6, the Vols (1-1)
had a chance to take the lead
after driving 52 yards, but
UCLA (2-0) held fast and Lane
Kiffin lost for the first time as
Tennessee coach.
The Vols’ defense, led by
Monte Kiffin, had been battering
the Bruins’ offense for
much of the day. UCLA had
only 186 yards of offense compared
to Tennessee’s 208. The
Bruins had four fewer first
downs, held the ball for three
fewer minutes and had 60
more yards in penalties.
Tennessee reached UCLA’s
Kevin Prince many times,
but usually after he released
the ball. After Hardesty was
stopped, Tennessee got a
safety when Dennis Rogan
sacked Prince. An inept Jonathan
Crompton couldn’t do
anything with the last-minute
opportunity after getting the
ball back, taking a sack and
throwing three incomplete
passes.
The Tigers jumped off to a
scoring first on one of Burns’
scores as Auburn showed
it would rely heavily on the
times for 11 yards and two
touchdowns from the formation
in the first half.
72 yards and LSU’s only two
touchdowns in a victory over
Vanderbilt on a rain-soaked
Saturday night. The Commodores
(1-1, 0-1 Southeastern
Conference) trailed by
only one touchdown midway
through the fourth quarter
as they attempted to win in
Tiger Stadium for the first
time since 1951.
LSU (2-0, 1-0) pushed it to
23-9 with 6:01 to go after Williams’
second touchdown.
He slipped a tackle at the
line of scrimmage, cut back,
Brees said. “Cornerback
Philip Buchanon is a guy we
played against in Tampa and
(cornerback) Anthony Henry
from Dallas, so we’re familiar
with those guys from playing
on different teams with different
defenses. Obviously
everybody teaches everything
different. The linebacker
corps, getting (Larry)
Foote from Pittsburgh and
Julian Peterson from Seattle
— they’ve gone out and
gotten some guys.
“You try to look at everything,
but understand that
you could get anything,”
Brees continued. “You have
to expect the unexpected.”
Few expect the Lions, overhaul
or not, to keep up with
a Saints team that has all
the key players back from an
offense that led the NFL in
yards per game (410.7) and
scoring (28.9) last season.
Reggie Bush has said he’ll
be back and better than
ever from left knee surgery
last December, despite sitting
out much of the preseason.
Receiver Marques
Colston and tight end Jeremy
Shockey are healthy and
have looked sharp. Oddsmakers
made the Saints nearly
two-touchdown favorites.
Yet the Saints have only to
recall their own recent history
to see the danger of
overlooking Detroit.
When Sean Payton found
his first head coaching job
in New Orleans in 2006, the
Saints were fresh off a miserable
3-13 campaign. Payton
sent packing about half the
players he inherited from
the old regime, brought in
Brees, drafted Bush, made
several other key changes on
both sides of the ball, and the
rest is history. New Orleans
went from worst to first in
the NFC South, came within
one win of the franchise’s
first-ever Super Bowl appearance,
and uplifted a community
that was reeling from a
natural disaster of historic
proportions.
Coleman had an interception
return for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs stormed back
early in the second quarter,
sparked by the return of
Dixon, who scored on a oneyard
run with 12:05 before
halftime. Dixon rushed nine
times for 50 yards on the
12-play drive.
then faked a defender to the
ground before hurdling over
him and into the end zone for
the 14-yard score.
Alabama 40, FIU 14
Greg McElroy completed
a school-record 14 straight
passes, freshman Trent Richardson
rushed for a pair of
second-half touchdowns and
No. 4 Alabama pulled away for
a victory over Florida International.
underdog Golden Panthers
The Cumblerlands Patriots
(2-0) piled up 595 yards of total
offense Saturday in Robinson-
Hale Stadium on their way to
a win over Mississippi College
(1-1). Cumberlands, ranked
6th in the latest NAIA Top
with a dominating offensive
performance in which they
scored eight touchdowns on
10 possessions.
Mississippi College quarterback
Adam Shaffer completed
23-of-35 passes for 206 yards
break.
(0-1) until Richardson scored
from 9 and 35 yards in the
final 19 minutes. Terry Grant
added a 42-yard TD run. The
beat Troy in their final tuneup
before beginning Southeastern
Conference play. Tebow
completed 15-of-24 passes
for 237 yards and equaled
his career high with four TD
passes. He also ran 13 times
for 71 yards. His 4-yard TD run
was the 45th of his career and
tied him with former Auburn
star Cadillac Williams for third
on the SEC’s all-time list.
South Carolina 37
Rennie Curran broke up a
fourth-down pass at the goal
line and Georgia held off South
Carolina in a wild game.
wasn’t decided until Curran,
a linebacker, batted down
Stephen Garcia’s final throw
on a fourth-and-4 play at the
Georgia 7 with 27 seconds
remaining.
The Bulldogs (1-1, 1-0 Southeastern
Conference) avoided
their first 0-2 start since 1996.
South Carolina (1-1, 0-1) was
Tate Forcier threw a 5-yard
38-34 win over Notre Dame on
Saturday.
Armando Allen ran for a
touchdown and got the 2-point
conversion on a nifty Statue
of Liberty play with 5:13 left
after Jimmy Clausen threw
his third touchdown pass to
give the Fighting Irish (1-1)
the lead, but their defense
could not deny Forcier and
the Wolverines (2-0).
Forcier’s 31-yard TD run
on a fourth down gave the
Wolverines an 11-point lead
early in the fourth quarter. He
threw an interception on his
next drive to aid the Irish’s
comeback, but the freshman
bounced back by converting
a third down with a pass
and clutch connection with
Mathews on the side of the
end zone.
