GeoExchange Success In Manitoba & Canada
Lloyd Kuczek
A presentation on the successful geoexchange marketing efforts of a Canadian
utility and the development of a successful geoexchange industry in Canada.
Lessons from the Olympics
Jim Hinshaw
Keep in the game. Overcome the hurdles. Go for the gold. Remember: you’re
in it to succeed. You’re in it to win.
Jim Hinshaw of Sales Improvement Professionals Inc. will speak about lessons
the geothermal industry can learn from the Olympics. Lessons such as:
• Never give up. Perseverance is key, even when it seems the odds are
against you, especially when the odds are against you.
• Never forget what got you to the geothermal market in the first place.
Never forget your first love.
• Little things make a huge difference. In fact, they make all the difference.
• Real commitment. What does real commitment look like?
• Stay focused. The lessons from staying focused are huge. Huge lessons
from huge people.
• Little voice lessons. The little voice in your head is wrong. Don’t listen to it.
And, just for good measure:
• David and Goliath. What we can learn that can help your company survive
and grow this year.
10:30 am B 108 Technical Support Values
10:30 am C 109 IGSHPA Committee Meetings
Comparing GSHP and ASHP Performance Ratings
Dan Ellis
Do ground-water and ground-source heat pumps still make sense given the advent
of 19 SEER air-source heat pumps and the impending minimum efficiency
level of 13 SEER for these products? This presentation will explain how these
ratings are determined and offer methods for comparing the efficiency of these
products, both under idealized rating conditions and in “real world” applications.
CPTherm-G - A New Fluid for Closed Loop Geothermal
Systems
Dean Hamil
CPTherm-G is an aqueous heat transfer fluid for closed loop geothermal systems.
The product has undergone extensive lab testing for corrosion and was
also run in a laboratory closed loop system for over 5000 hours using commercial
components. To date, results have been encouraging. CPTherm-G
was developed to address specific problems associated with currently used
fluids such as flammability with methanol and low temperature viscosity issues
with glycol. Robust anti-corrosives and a buffer system are included to
counter corrosion. The improved heat transfer properties of the fluid can lead
to reduction in loop size which can decrease up-front costs and also reduce
operational costs.
Optimization Study of a Hybrid Geothermal Heat Pump
System
John Shonder, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
The lack of consensus on the design and control of hybrid geothermal systems
has limited their use. A set of hybrid configurations and control schemes was
identified and implemented into a simulation model by ORNL. Shonder will
discuss the study’s results, compare the systems and control strategies, describe
the optimized system, and provide some limited sensitivity analysis of
the variables that affect the system design.
HVAC systems, operations, utility rate options and maintenance cost.
Also being discussed: the impact of life cycle ownership, owning and operating
cost of geothermal systems with respect to utility rates and structures, what a
Time Track Room Title/Description
Humidity Control and IAQ Solutions with Geothermal
Systems
Jeff Hammond
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a major consideration in building design and renovation.
Fresh air requirements can cause humidity problems that adversely affect
occupants and building materials. This presentation will give an overview of
the latest technologies applied to geothermal systems to address humidity
control, including energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) and a new concept for
modulating reheat that can be applied to a standard refrigeration circuit.
OSU Hybrid Lab Simulation Data Report
Dan Fisher
Dan Fisher has recently been involved in an effort to validate simulation models
using measured data from the hybrid ground source heat pump laboratory.
In this presentation, he will highlight the capabilities of the experimental facility,
discuss issues related to the experimental validation of simulation models and
present some of the early results of the study.
How Do I Manage My Outside Air?
Bryan Garcia
With today’s rising energy cost and the requirement to bring in enough ventilation
air to a building, how can I survive the cost and integrate into my geothermal
system? How can I improve the building’s air quality? In this session, we will
discuss how to save on sizing and energy consumption. We will also talk about
how to reduce outside air requirements with proper filtration. This session will
give you valuable information that can help new additions as well as retrofits.
Impacts
Terry Proffer, CGD
Our longevity in the geoexchange industry is a result of ongoing training, experience,
freely swapping information between colleagues and competitors, and sometimes,
just plain bull-headedness. We cannot give up because someone tells us “that cannot
possibly work.” This presentation may help to stimulate more industry-wide
attention and discussion to reducing the commonly recurring problems that are
limiting the growth of the geoexchange market nationally.
LEED Points Available for Geothermal HVAC Systems
Bob Koschka
How do I get LEED points from my geoexchange system? What choices can
I make to improve the efficiency and IAQ of my HVAC system? This presentation
looks at the credit points available from LEED New Construction (NC)
categories.
