Do ground-water <strong>and</strong> ground-source heat pumps still make sense given the advent<br />

of 19 SEER air-source heat pumps <strong>and</strong> the impending minimum efficiency<br />

level of 13 SEER for these products? This presentation will explain how these<br />

ratings are determined <strong>and</strong> offer methods for comparing the efficiency of these<br />

products, both under idealized rating conditions <strong>and</strong> in “real world” applications.<br />

CPTherm-G - A New Fluid for Closed Loop Geothermal<br />

Systems<br />

Dean Hamil<br />

CPTherm-G is an aqueous heat transfer fluid for closed loop geothermal systems.<br />

The product has undergone extensive lab testing for corrosion <strong>and</strong> was<br />

also run in a laboratory closed loop system for over 5000 hours using commercial<br />

components. To date, results have been encouraging. CPTherm-G<br />

was developed to address specific problems associated with currently used<br />

fluids such as flammability with methanol <strong>and</strong> low temperature viscosity issues<br />

with glycol. Robust anti-corrosives <strong>and</strong> a buffer system are included to<br />

counter corrosion. The improved heat transfer properties of the fluid can lead<br />

to reduction in loop size which can decrease up-front costs <strong>and</strong> also reduce<br />

operational costs.<br />

Optimization Study of a Hybrid Geothermal Heat Pump<br />

System<br />

John Shonder, Oak Ridge National Laboratory<br />

The lack of consensus on the design <strong>and</strong> control of hybrid geothermal systems<br />

has limited their use. A set of hybrid configurations <strong>and</strong> control schemes was<br />

identified <strong>and</strong> implemented into a simulation model by ORNL. Shonder will<br />

discuss the study’s results, compare the systems <strong>and</strong> control strategies, describe<br />

the optimized system, <strong>and</strong> provide some limited sensitivity analysis of<br />

the variables that affect the system design.<br />

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a major consideration in building design <strong>and</strong> renovation.<br />

Fresh air requirements can cause humidity problems that adversely affect<br />

occupants <strong>and</strong> building materials. This presentation will give an overview of<br />

the latest technologies applied to geothermal systems to address humidity<br />

control, including energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) <strong>and</strong> a new concept for<br />

modulating reheat that can be applied to a st<strong>and</strong>ard refrigeration circuit.<br />

OSU Hybrid Lab Simulation Data Report<br />

Dan Fisher has recently been involved in an effort to validate simulation models<br />

using measured data from the hybrid ground source heat pump laboratory.<br />

In this presentation, he will highlight the capabilities of the experimental facility,<br />

discuss issues related to the experimental validation of simulation models <strong>and</strong><br />

present some of the early results of the study.<br />

How Do I Manage My Outside Air?<br />

With today’s rising energy cost <strong>and</strong> the requirement to bring in enough ventilation<br />

air to a building, how can I survive the cost <strong>and</strong> integrate into my geothermal<br />

system? How can I improve the building’s air quality? In this session, we will<br />

discuss how to save on sizing <strong>and</strong> energy consumption. We will also talk about<br />

how to reduce outside air requirements with proper filtration. This session will<br />

USDOE Funded Ground Source Heat Pump Demonstration<br />

Project in Beijing, China<br />

Shawn Xu<br />

A ground source heat pump system was completed in December 2004 for the<br />

308,000-square-foot Huaxia Technology Building in Beijing, China. Xu will<br />

describe the project from its inception to projected emission reduction.<br />

In addition to the benefit of greenhouse gas emission reduction, this project<br />

serves broader purposes through public education in energy efficiency <strong>and</strong><br />

renewable energy <strong>and</strong> the collection of ground source heat pump system performance<br />

data in Beijing.<br />

Ditch Witch<br />

Phil Albertson has made countless contributions to the geothermal industry in many<br />

so significant that Popular Science has named him a pioneer in developing the<br />

geothermal technology, <strong>and</strong> Fortune magazine gave him the title of geothermal evangelist.<br />

After serving with the U.S. Air Force as a jet fighter pilot, Albertson completed<br />

his industrial engineering degree from <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University in 1959.<br />

Upon graduation, he worked for Charles Machine Works, <strong>and</strong> shortly thereafter<br />

worked closely with Dr. Jim Bose in developing <strong>IGSHPA</strong>. The developer of the<br />

Slinky pipe configuration, Albertson came up with the idea while playing with his<br />

children’s Slinky-br<strong>and</strong> toy. Now retired, Albertson continues to be proactive in<br />

promoting geothermal <strong>and</strong> works closely with <strong>IGSHPA</strong> to maintain the industry.<br />

Larry Eitelman<br />

Florida Heat Pump Manufacturing<br />

Graduated from <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University in May 1958. Design engineer for<br />

shell <strong>and</strong> tube heat exchangers <strong>and</strong> air-cooled heat exchangers for 23 years. Joined<br />

McElroy Manufacturing 1982 as sales engineer for fusion equipment <strong>and</strong> polyethylene<br />

pipe for earth coupled water source heat pumps. Responsible for instruction<br />

Michael E. Albertson<br />

Global Logic Corporation<br />

Michael Albertson co-authored the first commercially available software for the geothermal industry to include design,<br />

costing <strong>and</strong> economic feasibility. He installed his first ground heat exchanger over 25 years ago <strong>and</strong> operated a contracting<br />

company which designed <strong>and</strong> installed geothermal systems internationally <strong>and</strong> nationally. Albertson served for<br />

more than 11 years as Director of Commercial Geothermal Sales <strong>and</strong> National Accounts Manager for a major manufacturer<br />

of water source <strong>and</strong> geothermal heat pumps. As a member of <strong>IGSHPA</strong>, he assisted in developing the Train-The-<br />

Trainer Program to certify installers of geothermal heat pump systems. Albertson is a graduate of <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />

University <strong>and</strong> is currently the president of Global Logic Corporation<br />

Bill Beattie<br />

Bill Beattie is a founding partner of Rockford Geothermal LLC in Rockford, Ill. Rockford Geothermal is a professional<br />

<strong>State</strong> University. His research <strong>and</strong> teaching focus in the motivation <strong>and</strong> performance of customer contact employees.<br />

Prior to coming to OSU, Bone was a residential <strong>and</strong> commercial real estate professional in Utah where he <strong>and</strong><br />

his sales team achieved unprecedented sales levels. His passions include family, fly-fishing, <strong>and</strong> OSU athletics.<br />

Jim Bose<br />

<strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University/<strong>IGSHPA</strong><br />

Jim Bose is the director of the Division of Engineering Technology at <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University in Stillwater, Okla., <strong>and</strong><br />

the executive director of <strong>IGSHPA</strong>. His experience centers around the design of ground heat exchangers used primarily<br />

as heat sinks <strong>and</strong> sources for closed-loop GSHPs. He has written design <strong>and</strong> application manuals for ASHRAE <strong>and</strong><br />

NRECA, <strong>and</strong> helped prepare a manual for determining soil <strong>and</strong> rock behavior for design purposes. He received his Ph.D.<br />

in mechanical engineering from <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University.<br />

Joe Dobry<br />

Joe Dobry has over 35 years experience as a field sales & service representative for Baroid Industrial Drilling Products.<br />

He currently specializes in grouting applications <strong>and</strong> techniques for the ground source heat loop industry.<br />

Daniel Ellis<br />

ClimateMaster, Inc.<br />

Daniel Ellis is president of ClimateMaster in <strong>Oklahoma</strong> City, Okla. Previously co-founder <strong>and</strong> president of WaterFurnace<br />

International, Ellis has been active in the geothermal industry since 1978. His technical contributions include the development<br />

of residential system design <strong>and</strong> analysis software, advanced technology GHPs, <strong>and</strong> design procedures for<br />

commercial GHP systems. Ellis is chairman of ISO subcommittee TC86/SC6 for air conditioning <strong>and</strong> heat pump st<strong>and</strong>ards,<br />

<strong>and</strong> a member of ARI’s international committee. He is also a member of ASHRAE, <strong>and</strong> serves on the <strong>IGSHPA</strong><br />

advisory council. Ellis majored in Physics at Purdue University.<br />

Dan Fisher, Ph.D., PE<br />

<strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University<br />

Dan Fisher has over 15 years of experience in building simulation research <strong>and</strong> development. He is the principle<br />

architect of the EnergyPlus plant simulation <strong>and</strong> has directed research projects sponsored by DOE, DoD <strong>and</strong> ASHRAE.<br />

He recently developed a hybrid ground source heat pump laboratory to facilitate the experimental investigation of water<br />

source systems with various combinations of ground loops, cooling towers <strong>and</strong> cooling ponds.<br />

Bryan Garcia, PE<br />

Trane<br />

Bryan Garcia began his professional engineering career with Trane in 1995, where he is still employed today. As a<br />

systems engineer, Garcia is responsible for developing designing, contracting <strong>and</strong> implementing commercial HVAC<br />

solutions. He has been involved in a variety of <strong>Oklahoma</strong> City projects including the Bricktown Ballpark <strong>and</strong> the renovation<br />

of the Civic Center. Garcia holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University<br />

(1995) <strong>and</strong> a Masters in Business Administration from the University of <strong>Oklahoma</strong> (2000).<br />

Dean Hamil<br />

CPI Engineering Services<br />

Dean Hamil is currently a business manager at CPI Engineering Services, which is a subsidiary of the Lubrizol Corporation.<br />

He is responsible for the marketing <strong>and</strong> sales of newly launched products, such as CPTherm-G, - a new geothermal<br />

fluid as well as for marketing refinery <strong>and</strong> oil field products for the company. Prior to that, Hamil managed CPI’s<br />

extensive production <strong>and</strong> blending operations located in Houston, Texas. He obtained a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical<br />

engineering from Lamar University in 1988 <strong>and</strong> has been with Lubrizol subsidiaries for over 14 years.<br />

Jeff Hammond<br />

ClimateMaster<br />

Jeff Hammond is currently product manager for ClimateMaster <strong>and</strong> is responsible for new product development <strong>and</strong><br />

existing product updates. He started with the company in 1999 <strong>and</strong> has worked in training <strong>and</strong> sales before taking his<br />

current position as Director of Product Management in 2003. Prior to his work at ClimateMaster, he was with WaterFurnace<br />

International for 12. Hammond’s education includes a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of<br />

St. Francis <strong>and</strong> an Associate of Applied Science in electrical engineering technology from Purdue University. Mr.<br />

Hammond has been a member of ASHRAE since 1990 <strong>and</strong> has served on <strong>IGSHPA</strong> technical committees for geothermal<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> training.<br />

George V. Head<br />

EnLink Geoenergy Services, Inc.<br />

George Head joined EnLink as its president <strong>and</strong> CEO in 2000 <strong>and</strong> is responsible for directing EnLink’s strategic growth,<br />

meeting customers’ heating <strong>and</strong> cooling goals <strong>and</strong> increasing shareholder value. Before starting at EnLink, Head was<br />

president <strong>and</strong> chief executive of Fort Bend Communication Companies, Inc. (FBCC), a Texas-based provider of local,<br />

long-distance <strong>and</strong> ISP services. His 30 years of management experience include 23 years with Sprint Corporation,<br />

where he held officer positions in local telephone <strong>and</strong> long distance operations. Head earned a Bachelor of Science<br />

degree in business administration <strong>and</strong> accounting from the University of Minnesota in 1974.


James S. Hinshaw<br />

Sales Improvement Professionals Inc.<br />

Upon graduating from the University of Missouri at Rolla, Jim Hinshaw started his career with Trane <strong>and</strong> was named<br />

manager of their residential division. Hinshaw has also worked for Carrier <strong>and</strong> also served as vice president of a<br />

residential <strong>and</strong> commercial service <strong>and</strong> replacement company, running their sales <strong>and</strong> installation division. He has<br />

provided high-results for clients from Calgary, Canada to Adelaide, Australia. He has since retired from the contracting<br />

business when he formed his own training company, Sales Improvement Professionals.<br />

Bill Holloway<br />

<strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University<br />

Bill Holloway is on staff with <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>State</strong> University <strong>and</strong> holds the position of Senior Research Engineer. He has<br />

been responsible for the development of the instrumentation <strong>and</strong> data acquisition systems for the GSHP research<br />

projects. As a collateral duty, he is a lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Technology department.<br />

Howard E. “Buzz” Johnson<br />

EnLink Geoenergy Services Inc.<br />

Howard Johnson currently serves as the senior vice-president of engineering <strong>and</strong> chief technical officer for EnLink<br />

Geoenergy Services Inc. Johnson’s tenure with EnLink began as a consultant prior to his joining the executive team as<br />

a full-time employee in December 2000. As VP-Engineering <strong>and</strong> CTO, Buzz has continued to develop <strong>and</strong> refine technology<br />

<strong>and</strong> related processes to provide differentiating technology for EnLink. Johnson obtained a Bachelor of Science<br />

in 1971 from the Georgia Institute of Technology.<br />

Robert Koschka<br />

McQuay International<br />

Robert Koschka is an application/systems engineer with the Applied Terminal Systems Group located in Auburn, N.Y.<br />

He has been active in the geothermal market for the last 20 years in both residential <strong>and</strong> commercial applications. His<br />

present duties at McQuay include assisting the McQuay representative network with product evaluation <strong>and</strong> design<br />

assistance, market development for McQuay’s new Geothermal product line, <strong>and</strong> consulting with the Engineering Products<br />

Group on the new McQuay water source heat pump redesign. Koschka received his Bachelor’s degree from<br />

Purdue University in 1977 <strong>and</strong> began working in the field with a design/build mechanical firm in Indianapolis, Ind.<br />

Throughout his career, he has been responsible for design <strong>and</strong> installation of energy efficient products <strong>and</strong> controls. He<br />

is a current ASHRAE member <strong>and</strong> an Accredited Geothermal Installer with the International Ground Source Heat Pump<br />

Association.<br />

Lloyd Kuczek, PE, M.B.A.<br />

Manitoba Hydro<br />

Lloyd Kuczek is the vice chair of the Canadian GeoExchange Coalition <strong>and</strong> is a key player in Manitoba Hydro’s senior<br />

management team. Lloyd has extensive business, engineering <strong>and</strong> marketing experience in the energy industry <strong>and</strong><br />

has developed <strong>and</strong> played a key role in implementing the Power Smart energy efficiency strategy. Additional accomplishments<br />

included integrating natural gas conservation into Manitoba Hydro’s overall conservation efforts <strong>and</strong> incorporated<br />

industry best practices into the corporation’s energy conservation strategies.<br />

Patrick Lambert, PE<br />

Geo-Energie Inc.<br />

Patrick Lambert graduated in 1996 with a degree in mechanical engineering from University of Tree Rivers in Canada.<br />

From 1997 to 2004, he worked for a major Canadian HVAC entrepreneur as director of engineering <strong>and</strong> international<br />

development. Lambert has supervised geothermal business development for Canada, the United <strong>State</strong>s, Mexico <strong>and</strong><br />

Russia. He has participated in over $1.5 million worth of research <strong>and</strong> development for the adaptation of geothermal to<br />

northern climate conditions. Lambert is also an <strong>IGSHPA</strong> Accredited Installer & Trainer. He currently is the vice president<br />

of Geo-Energie Inc.<br />

Ice Kube Systems Ltd.<br />

Ed Lohrenz is a partner in Ice Kube Systems Ltd., a manufacturer of water-to-water heat pumps designed for lowtemperature<br />

applications. He has worked in the geoexchange industry since the early 80’s, applying the technology to<br />

both residential <strong>and</strong> commercial applications. He has been involved in over 50 integrated geoexchange‚ systems in<br />

hockey rinks <strong>and</strong> large commercial <strong>and</strong> institutional buildings.<br />

Morris Lovett, PE<br />

OG&E<br />

Morris Lovett is currently the senior engineer of commercial/industrial markets at <strong>Oklahoma</strong> Gas <strong>and</strong> Electric. His<br />

primary duties are architectural <strong>and</strong> engineering community liaison, mechanical building design education <strong>and</strong> customer<br />

energy efficiency information studies for energy conservation <strong>and</strong> dem<strong>and</strong> management. Lovett has previously<br />

been with the University of <strong>Oklahoma</strong> <strong>and</strong> a design <strong>and</strong> operations engineer, USPCI as a design <strong>and</strong> maintenance<br />

engineer <strong>and</strong> Tulsa University as an electric <strong>and</strong> maintenance engineer.<br />

Kevin McCray is the executive director of the 15,000-member National Ground Water Association headquartered at<br />

Westerville, Ohio. McCray first joined NGWA in 1979 as an editor with the association’s publishing operations. He also<br />

served as NGWA marketing director, convention workshops coordinator, director of the National Ground Water Information<br />

Center, <strong>and</strong> as the first executive director of The American Ground Water Trust.<br />
