THE FUTURE OF
SOUTHERN BAPTISTS
--• (Continued from page three)
ventibn; it co-operates with the convention.
The Baptist convention in America
grew out of the need, you know, to have
a missionary society to support the Jud-:
sons in Burma. And out of that "grew
the Soifthern Baptist Convention.
I Question: As we look forward to June
and St. Louis, what would you really
like to see accomplished by the convention?
Answer: The number one thing I
would like to see happen in St. Louis is
for us to conduct ourselves in such a way
that our image could be improved appreciably.
I am hoping that we can conduct
our affairs in such a way that we
shall not have the kind of attitudes shown
toward i • one . another as were . shown in
Denver.
Question: Would you care "to say anything
about what might be thought of
as the .so-called "issues that may come
before the convention when it meets?
. Answer: I know of no issues that are
in the offing or even in the embryo stage.
Question: Recently, a distinguished
writer said that Southern Baptists are
moving away from the common people.
. Is this true in your estimation?
Answer: This would be true only in
'some areas. Southern Baptists have become
pretty dignified in some areas and
they really have lost the common touch.
But it would not ,be universally or nationally
so. There are many places where
our churches are made up strictly of
"common" people.
Question: What is your reaction to
new- folk-rock music coming into
churches? ;
. Answer:-My persorfal feeling about
is a negative one. We : the
the
the
this
do not needthe
loud, .bombastic, amplified, electrified
rock folk music in our-churches. This is
actually one of—the most interesting
phenomena of the time in which we live.
This Actually started about the time the
free speech movement developed, and
degenerated into the filthy speech movement,
then became disoriented in the hippie
colonies and finally resulted in the
fragmentation which resulted in the an-]
archistic organizations. At the same time
the music was trying to ~say: whaf was
-being said in the free speech movement.
But it failed. The Beatles dissolved as a
group and ran off all over the world
looking for a message. The movement
lost any message and now then has lost
its reason for existence. It has turned-, as
a lost resort—as a last gasp—to jthe
churches where really the difference .is
not known, and people do not understand
what is involved here. It shows
up in the churches and we feel that we
must be in step with the modern generation.
As a matter of fact, this movement
is dying and there is a great hunger
for direction among the young people of
our time.. Where the New Testament
message has been proclaimed they have
found this to be the answer for which
they were looking all along. There is a
tremendous revival among the younger
generation in America. All over this land
young people are turning to the preaching
of the gospel.
~ Question: What would you say is the
greatest need of our denominationthinking
of these 11 million people spread
across the nation—at the present time?
Answer: I think we need to find a-way
to lay hold of. the potential resources of
11 million Southern Baptists, both spiritually
and financially. And if we could
harness the potential power represented
by these people and turn it loose in the
world, we would be one of the most formidable
forces in .the history of; the human
race.
Question: What possibilities do you see
—in that connection—for the future of
Southern Baptists, say-for the next' 30
years, the remaining years of this century?
Particularly in missions and evangelism?
How far could we go if we did
harness this potential? - .
Answer: Oh, there would be no way
for me to express this in any realistic sort
of fashion at all.,, It just staggers the
imagination—all the way from sending
2,500 missionaries to the foreign field
we could be ^sending 7,500 missionaries,
or 10,000—if we could harness-the resources
of the present membership of
Southern Baptist churches. The money
we are. spending now through our Home
Mission Board would be a mere pittance
compared to what would be snent in the
homeland. And the seminaries. I would
be against any suggestion that would lead
to the cutting back of these seminaries
we have. We have not expanded too
greatlv here. If revival corries./and there"
are reasons to believe that it is coming,
in fact, it is already here fsome people
are not going to get in on,it because" they
won't adjust to the Spirit's leading), there
are young people by the thousands surrendering
their lives to church-related
vocations and we have the seminaries to
train them when other denominations are
closing the • doors of their schools. I
wouldn't be a part to that at all, because
I think God ( has given us an opportunity
and our greatest days are ahead. I feel
something great about Southern Baptists.
If we can respond to the mcvement "of
God's; Spirit in this hour, our greatest
days really are ahead; there is- no doubt
in mv mind about this. If .we
do not re-
spond, we may go the way of other denominations
before us.
