CICS <strong>International</strong> Security <strong>and</strong> Development Fellowship<br />
2013-2014 Call for Applications<br />
The Center for <strong>International</strong> <strong>and</strong> Comparative Studies (CICS) announces a <strong>call</strong> for <strong>application</strong>s for <strong>the</strong> 2013-2014 <strong>International</strong><br />
Security <strong>and</strong> Development Fellowship. The fellowship is a one-year appointment that provides salary <strong>and</strong>/or research<br />
funding in <strong>the</strong> amount of $16,000. The fellowship is intended to promote undergraduate education on international security<br />
<strong>and</strong>/or development at U-M by developing a new course with significant international content <strong>and</strong> an interdisciplinary<br />
perspective. This course will initially be offered through <strong>the</strong> <strong>International</strong> Studies program <strong>and</strong> will subsequently become<br />
part of <strong>the</strong> curriculum of <strong>the</strong> fellow’s home department.<br />
The intention is for <strong>the</strong> course to become a permanent part of <strong>the</strong> department’s curriculum. We also encourage joint<br />
<strong>application</strong>s from members of two or more departments or units, in which case <strong>the</strong> applicants will divide <strong>the</strong> stipend.<br />
ELIGIBILITY<br />
U-M-Ann Arbor regular instructional staff members, in any department, are eligible to apply.<br />
REQUIREMENTS<br />
During <strong>the</strong> 2013-14 academic year, <strong>the</strong> <strong>International</strong> Security <strong>and</strong> Development Fellow is expected to:<br />
1. Develop <strong>and</strong> teach an undergraduate seminar on international security <strong>and</strong> cooperation or development on a topic<br />
with significant international content for one semester, <strong>and</strong> teach it a second time within 2 years in <strong>the</strong> fellow’s<br />
home department<br />
2. Give one public lecture<br />
3. Contribute a 2,000-word article to <strong>the</strong> II Journal during <strong>the</strong> 2013-14 academic year<br />
The amount of <strong>the</strong> fellowship is $16,000. The fellow will receive compensation up to a summer ninth for developing <strong>the</strong> new<br />
course. Required deductions for fringe benefits <strong>and</strong> taxes will be made. The remainder of <strong>the</strong> fellowship will be paid into his<br />
or her research fund. These funds may be used to purchase classroom materials or cover <strong>the</strong> costs of bringing guest speakers<br />
to <strong>the</strong> course. Total compensation will not exceed $16,000.<br />

Completed CICS funding request cover sheet including <strong>the</strong> signatures of all relevant chairs <strong>and</strong> directors in <strong>the</strong><br />
applicant’s department, agreeing that, if selected, <strong>the</strong> department will give serious consideration to including <strong>the</strong><br />
course in <strong>the</strong> permanent curriculum<br />
Brief statement describing <strong>the</strong> course topic <strong>and</strong> its relation to international security <strong>and</strong> cooperation (no more than<br />
500 words)<br />
Statement of purpose describing <strong>the</strong> applicant’s international security <strong>and</strong> cooperation-related experience <strong>and</strong><br />
reasons for applying (1-3 pages)<br />
CV<br />
Additional materials, such as an excerpt from a scholarly paper, book chapter, grant proposal, relevant report, or<br />
research project (optional)<br />
