ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013
YWAM MONTANA-LAKESIDE
We invited some very special guests from South Africa to run a six week course called Leading By the Spirit
(LBSC) in our spring quarter as well. The LBSC is designed to equip Youth With A Mission staff to spiritually
carry and lead in ministry settings, while fostering a lifestyle of living by the Spirit. We love our new friends from
the South and we are grateful for the growth and increasing effectiveness they brought to this ministry.
We also sent out our first touring bands in over four years! This was a very exciting time for us, as one of
our callings is to be an Arts and Music focused ministry. It was so good to hear the bands practicing all over
campus and to pray for their tours around the northwest and midwest United States.
Spring was an especially busy season for our leaders. After a lot of preparing, our leadership team spent four
days off-campus completing our Annual Planning time. This is a time where we evaluate the last year and look
towards the next one, so that as a ministry we may be as fruitful as possible for the Kingdom.
FROM THE
DIRECTORS
LOOKING BACK AT 2012/2013 WE SEE THE FAITHFUL HAND OF GOD AS WE CAME
TOGETHER AROUND THE VISION OF “WHATEVER IT TAKES TO KNOW GOD AND MAKE
HIM KNOWN TOGETHER.”
2012 started with the roll out of a newly expressed and clarified vision and values. We also presented a new
structure for the ministry in order to position ourselves for the growth we are experiencing and the expansion
of vision we are believing for. Our Fall students (DTS, SBS, Titus Project, School of Worship) were different
than any others I can remember. Rarely have we experienced the zeal and initiative we did with these young
learners and they set the pace for a very exciting and fruitful year.
This year we were especially proud of our Titus Project. Titus is a program that trains our SBS graduates to
teach the Bible to pastors and leaders that might not have access to other training resources. We ran our first
Titus Project in Chile and our goal of having a Titus project on every continent was accomplished.
We were blessed with a bigger than normal (50 students + staff) Winter Discipleship Training School. Their
outreach was very unique as the whole school went to Brazil together. Upon their return we were told of our
inheritance in that nation as lives were changed and Jesus’ name was proclaimed wherever they went. I pray
we never get so used to this that it does not move us to gratefulness at what we get to be a part of.
We also returned from our Christmas break to our wonderful School of Biblical Studies (SBS) students who
had finished one quarter and had two more quarters of intense, inductive bible study to go. Their diligence
and commitment was an inspiration to all of us to continue to press on towards the goal.
Our Spring Quarter started with quite a surprise – three inches of snow! While we weren’t expecting the snow,
we were very expectant of all that God would do. During this quarter we ran a Discipleship Training School,
Foundations in Community Development school, Old Testament and Church History seminars, as well as a
new program called Launch. Launch was pioneered by our Fall DTS school leaders, running for some of the
graduated Fall 2012 DTS students. The purpose was to continue leadership development and to “Launch”
these lovers of Christ in to missions and ministry.
God has been highlighting our testimony in the community and opened a door at the public elementary school
to run a Christian club on Fridays, called Club 3:16. This is an encouraging outreach to our young neighbors
and we were super excited to share Jesus in this place. Launching this was a great success with as many as
50+ kids attending each week. A salvation message was shared on the second to last week, and at least six
kids gave their lives to Christ! We look forward to see how God continues to use us to impact the community of
Lakeside.
Summer brought us sunshine and with it came our third Endurance DTS. More than half of our students for
this school were international which added a great flavor to the campus. The Endurance DTS focuses on the
outdoor community of hikers, campers, backpackers and has been a new and effective place to meet people
who are often unchurched. The testimonies coming out of this school have been very encouraging.
We also ran Summer Programs for dancers and musicians and we love seeing these energetic young people
use their gifts to communicate a message of hope. At the same time we ran a TESOL course, which is an
acronym for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. TESOL is a fantastic tool in missions and is
more and more in demand worldwide.
Summer proved to be a busy season on our campus, as we also ran the DTS Equip seminar, which we
continue to run every year. This program brought leaders from around the globe together to our beautiful valley
for six weeks to be trained in leadership and discipleship, all the while reminding the participants that we are
the disciples of Christ first. We were able to have several leaders from Target Nations join us and that is always
a very special honor for us.
With a growing ministry comes growing need for space. Since the weather is not conducive for building in the
winter we try to get a lot of our projects done in the summer with the help of our VWAP teams (Vacation With
A Purpose). We had over 170 volunteers (church teams from all over the US) join us this summer, and we saw
so many projects completed and lives changed! It is always humbling to have so many people pay to come out
here, and take their vacation time to work. In the midst of swinging hammers and paint brushes, many special
friendships and memories were made.
“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power
that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever.
Amen.” Ephesians 3.20-21
“I was in a group with my friends out for the day. It seemed ordinary
and to be honest I wasn’t feeling very accomplished or even motivated
due to my poor attitude, but I went out in faith that I had a message to
share that is greater than my feelings.
We passed an old wrinkled man who started to talk with us, trying to
communicate his situation. He was a street sweeper. My friends started
to talk with him, opening up, and showing compassion. I stood listening
and watching his face. He was desperate and dry. And then the
opportunity to share Jesus with this man came. I talked grace,
forgiveness, and hope. It was simple and definitely not me.
I felt the words I said were foreign or at least I wasn’t living them out in
that moment because I was so concerned with my own issues and not
concerned with the Savior. But here’s the incredible part. This is the
reason why I’m here. Despite my inadequacy in sharing the message of
hope, it got through to him! It was as if, a light bulb turned on in a dark
room, and there was for the first time a change in the man’s eyes. His
demeanor had a look of mystery. He had never heard of such good
news, that God wants to forgive him of his past! He drank in every word
that was spoken. And a man who almost died of dehydration now had
living water in him never to be thirsty again! I walked away with a deep
sense of humility, for here I am a broken man ministering to another
broken man. The only difference is that I found Jesus and I got to share
Him with the street sweeper”.
“To sum up this experience in just a few words, is more of a
challenge than what I had heard. You see, I could talk about
salvations and how whole churches were rocked. But to me
outreach was something else, something more personal, not
about numbering salvations off. It was the worst place I’d
ever been, the corruption, the hopelessness.
However it was one of the most beautiful places I’d ever
seen, and God gave us the privilege of bringing hope to the
broken, the less. And it was beautiful, it was challenging, it
was extravagant! But most of all it was spirit led and God
again, and again, proved his eternal glory and his intimate
love. It’s funny how you can go into a place thinking it’s you
pouring out the love. When it felt like all I did was receive,
throughout everything we had done. By refreshing the saints
or picking up children who had never had hope.”
During our time teaching in SBS in Thailand I had the chance to also preach in a little house
church with the Ging Gaan ministry (an outreach to university students). I was asking the Lord
what he wanted me to preach on for that Sunday and I felt like the Lord led me to John 6, the
story of Jesus feeding the 5000. So, I prepared a sermon on that and shared it on Sunday. Later
on in that week while I was hanging out with the some of the students, Peanut, a student who
had recently become a Christian, asked me why I preached out of the book of John. So, I told
her that I felt the Lord led me to teach out of it, I had been meditating on John previously and
God led me to that passage. I asked Peanut why she asked and she said she had been reading
62 OUTREACHES 24 COUNTRIES
John the week before and it was really confusing to her. And she had prayed and asked God
that whoever would be preaching on Sunday would preach out of the gospel of John so that
she could understand it. God is so good! I learned two simple but profound things here: First,
God answers peoples prayers. Second, God speaks to his people, so listen to him!
CORPORATE REBRAND
Over the past 27 years, we have grown into a large ministry campus serving hundreds of staff and students each
year and impacting thousands around the world with the Gospel. As we continue to grow, we are seeing a distinct
need for unity in our visual presence and representation both in-house and what we output from the campus.
This year we completely rebranded all aspects of our visual communications from logos, website, print marketing
and color scheme, to official documents and letterheads etc. We see this is an important value as a consistent and
unified brand will help to communicate the mission of our ministry effectively, unify us visually as a community and
hopefully help to recruit more students and staff. Our new visual identity helps to communicate the high standard
of schools, programs and opportunities that we have to offer.
can write outreach stories and testimonies and staff can share insights and thoughts on missional living. This
helps to communicate that our ministry is always moving forward and alive and hopefully users will keep coming
VWAP started in the summer of 2001 because we noticed that many kids go
on missions trips without their parents and vice versa and then when they
come home and try to explain their experience, it doesn’t always connect.
However, if a family can go together, experience missions and missions
work together, then the whole family has something that they can reflect
back on. During that time we also began to see a need that the campus had
in completing construction projects and making the campus livable and
presentable. VWAP has grown from that point into something we had only
dreamed it would. With God, truly anything is possible. VWAP is now a
program that not only keeps our campus functioning and presentable, but
whole families can come, be introduced to missions in a very low cost way,
and leave knowing they have made an impact in the Kingdom of God and
the lives of our missionaries.
Our staff consider it a tremendous blessing and are so thankful that teams
would volunteer a week out of their summer to join us to help improve our
facility for our current and future missionaries.
This summer our VWAP volunteers worked on a variety of projects helping
CAFETERIA/HALL PROJECT
KEITH & MARISKA BUZZARD
Campus Directors
In the Spring of 2013 YWAM Montana-Lakeside will embark on one or our biggest building project to date.
Because it has always been our understanding of the ways of God that "to whom much is given, much is
required," we rejoice at the significant growth we are experiencing but we are also sobered by it, sensing
that this season of blessing comes with a greater responsibility to fulfill God's kingdom assignment for our
ministry. To date we have had the privilege of training around 9000 students in our various programs and
schools, equipping and sending them to serve in over 100 nations. Somewhat surprisingly, even in the midst
of the financial instability worldwide, many of our training schools this past year were full to capacity, hosting
our largest number of students since our inception in 1985. Even more importantly, we have experienced this
year an unprecedented fruitfulness in our ministry partnerships around the world and especially with our
target nations. Because of this fruitfulness both overseas and locally, we have found ourselves needing to
continue expanding in order to accommodate the growth. Because we also felt compelled by the Lord many
years ago to operate with a "no-debt" policy, our capability to expand has often been slower than we would
like. To God's credit, however, and to the credit of an exceptional leadership team that has endeavored to be
obedient to Him, the entire facility, both new and old, is entirely debt free.
current cafeteria
Our next big step of faith is a much needed full remodeling of our current kitchen/cafeteria coupled with a
proposed expansion plan for that facility. This would provide for us a place where the entire staff/student
population can meet and eat together in one room, which has not been possible for many years.
This space will make room for more "Whatever it Takes To know God and Make Him Known. Together." and
that is what we get excited about!
JOHN HUDSON
Founder and Principal Architect at 100 Fold Studio
The current cafeteria and kitchen building will undergo a large-scale remodel and expansion. Upon completion,
the 17,000 sq.ft. facility will be one of the largest gathering halls in the whole Flathead Valley region. It will seat
up to 1000 people in auditorium-style seating and 500 people at dining tables. The multi-purpose building
includes a performance stage, childcare area, conference rooms and classrooms.
The design concept emphasizes “excellence without extravagance” and incorporates materials that are
economic and durable. We are using an engineered lumber structural system to span large distances in the hall
and minimize obstructions in viewing the stage. Our design will maximize daylight in the space and provide
exterior views. Also, we have been able to work the current commercial kitchen into the design of the expanded
facility with minor remodeling. This means that food service can continue through the majority of construction.
This building will become the heart of YWAM Montana-Lakeside’s campus.
When God gave Loren Cunningham the vision for YWAM over 50 years ago, a part of his understanding
was that YWAMers would not be paid employees but that each missionary would be responsible to
raise their own support through networks of friends, family and churches.
The wisdom of this approach would prove to be God-given for two reasons: First, If YWAM was to
become global in scope, individuals trusting God for their own support was a way in which everyone,
no matter where they originated from, could be invited to trust God for their personal provision as
opposed to trusting the organization to find an equitable way to fund its workers. Second, a highly
relational approach to support helps to create a closer bond between the supporter and the missionary,
resulting not only in financial partnership but prayer partnership as well. “Wherever your treasure is,
there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matt 6:21
