<strong>the</strong> way to Ormuz. 68 It had tantalized Portuguese <strong>and</strong> Europeans, for that matter, from<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ception of <strong>the</strong> "discoveries" era, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> sixteenth century,<br />

reports full of admiration, if somewhat ta<strong>in</strong>ted by <strong>the</strong> hostility encountered, percolated<br />

down to Goa. The pharmacists Tomé Pires, Galeote Pereira <strong>and</strong> Fernão Mendes P<strong>in</strong>to,<br />

among <strong>the</strong> first, must have already stimulated <strong>the</strong> appetites <strong>and</strong> enthusiasm for<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese th<strong>in</strong>gs. 69 What impressed Orta more than anyth<strong>in</strong>g, except <strong>the</strong> mercantile <strong>and</strong><br />

"mechanical" skills of <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese, such as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vention of <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g press, was <strong>the</strong><br />

fact that "<strong>the</strong>y give grades <strong>and</strong> many honors to <strong>the</strong> literati, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> ones who<br />

govern <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> country". 70 This be<strong>in</strong>g one of <strong>the</strong> ideals of <strong>the</strong> classical res<br />

publica, it cont<strong>in</strong>ued to thrive <strong>in</strong> all utopian literature, culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> French<br />

Enlightenment philosophers. Besides Orta, <strong>the</strong> Jesuit missionaries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixteenth <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> seventeenth centuries, were responsible <strong>in</strong> more important ways for herald<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

most positive sides of <strong>the</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese political system, especially compared to European<br />

regimes.<br />

Beyond utopia, on his own ground <strong>in</strong> Goa, Orta dealt with local literati <strong>and</strong><br />

doctors. He wrote that he learnt a lot from <strong>the</strong> "great physicians", Arabs <strong>and</strong><br />

Coraçones [Khorassani], whom he encountered at <strong>the</strong> court of Nizamoxa [Nizam<br />

Shah]. 71 However, on a daily basis, local physicians, Muslim hakims <strong>and</strong> H<strong>in</strong>du<br />

vaidyas, were not dissimilar from Portuguese doctors <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir heal<strong>in</strong>g methods <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir unprofessional <strong>and</strong> avaricious behavior. Thus, <strong>the</strong> vaidyas used Portuguese<br />

remedies <strong>in</strong> order "to please people" <strong>and</strong> "earn more money". Although <strong>the</strong>y avoided<br />

blood-lett<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y imitated <strong>the</strong> Portuguese <strong>in</strong> check<strong>in</strong>g ur<strong>in</strong>e but with no idea as to<br />

how to proceed, <strong>and</strong> "of <strong>the</strong> anatomy, <strong>the</strong>y don't know where <strong>the</strong> liver or spleen, or<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g is". 72 In a word, <strong>the</strong>y cured "by experience <strong>and</strong> by custom", <strong>and</strong> it was<br />

precisely that which Orta studied <strong>and</strong> amply used <strong>in</strong> his medical practice. Asked if he<br />

"took some th<strong>in</strong>gs [remedies] from <strong>the</strong>m", Orta replied, "Yes, many; but first I try<br />

remedies of our doctors, <strong>and</strong> when <strong>the</strong>y do not work, I take those of <strong>the</strong> Brahmans of<br />

<strong>the</strong> country". 73 This is a curious statement given that not all doctors <strong>in</strong> Goa were<br />

Brahmans <strong>and</strong> that Orta had no access to <strong>the</strong> classical medical Sanskrit texts such as<br />

<strong>the</strong> Suśrutasamhitā <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Carakasamhitā. 74 It is possible, however, that he suspected<br />

or even had some notion of <strong>the</strong> existence of such books s<strong>in</strong>ce, on <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>gs of <strong>the</strong><br />

Counter-reformation, <strong>the</strong> Catholic clergy <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jesuits had began to confiscate<br />

manuscripts from <strong>the</strong> Brahmans of Chorão, Divar <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r surround<strong>in</strong>g villages. 75<br />

Never<strong>the</strong>less, as many "<strong>in</strong>tellectuals" after him, such as <strong>the</strong> Jesuit missionaries<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves, Orta admired, respected <strong>and</strong> often futilely searched for <strong>the</strong> comprehensive<br />

local literate tradition <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir "honest" exponents. In <strong>the</strong> long run, it became an<br />
