2012 5th Annual Team JEM 3 Ride for SIDS
An Amazing Sight With 50 Bikes Down the Highway
The 5th Annual Team JEM 3 Ride for SIDS has come
and gone. June 23, 2012 was a beautiful day for a ride
and party. Fifty some bikes left Daniels Restaurant
and Open Air Bar for a 90 mile ride through the back roads
Director’s Desk
As we conclude the summer
months, we are embracing
“New Beginnings and
Infinite Possibilities” like never
before. We started this year
preparing for 22nd Annual SIDS
Golf Invitational & Evening Reception, unsure of its
future. The golf invitational is our signature event at
the Center for Infant & Child Loss. The funding
raised at this event covers approximately one third of
the Center’s operating expenses. Losing this event
could potentially change the trajectory of how we
provide much needed bereavement services to families
across the State of Maryland. As the year progressed,
the golf committee remained steadfast in their
determination to make this golf invitational as
successful as all others. As we planned for our golf
invitational, amazing things started happening.
of Baltimore, Carroll and Howard Counties. 50 bikes riding
staggered down the highway is an amazing sight.
Once back to Daniels, the DJ, John Johnson rocked the
place, and pit beef was had by all. Continued on Page 5
I was introduced to Carolyn Mitchell, an AT&T Area
Manager. I was able to share with her our Center’s mission
and vision and convey to her the how our Annual SIDS
Golf tournament has a direct impact on the success of our
mission. Carolyn then introduced me to Lauri Moore,
Senior Marketing Manager, to discuss sponsorship
opportunities with AT&T. There were several meaningful
conversations with Lauri regarding the Center and the
work that we do. We also discussed title sponsorship of the
22nd Annual SIDS Golf Invitational & Evening Reception.
We discussed the planning of the event; identifying the
location, golf committee members, corporate sponsorship,
live and silent auctions, day of golf and special guests. And
then I did something else. I gave Lauri a copy of the
Center DVD that was produced by one of our golf
committee members, who is also a bereaved parent. The
video features five families that experienced the sudden
and unexpected death of their child and talk about the
Center’s role in providing bereavement support and its
effect on their healing process.
“Look Before You Lock” Campaign Launched
Nationally, fifteen children have died this year from
heat stroke after having been left unattended in
vehicles. A recent case involved a child that fell
asleep in a child care van. Tragically, these deaths can be
prevented by reminding those who care for and transport
children of the importance of double-checking to be sure
all passengers are out of the vehicle.
In 72 degree weather, the temperature in a vehicle can
reach 117 degrees in 1 hour. Cracking the windows is not
recommended because temperatures can rise 19 degrees in
10 minutes – an environment still able to cause heat
stroke in a short period of time.
The Office of Child Care and Office of Head Start are
partnering with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT)
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
to provide information to the early care and education
Director’s Desk From Page 1
The DVD also features photos of over 30 infants
and children who have died and whose families
received support from the Center.
Within a week, I received a call from Lauri
indicating that AT&T will become the Title
Sponsor of the 22nd Annual AT&T SIDS Golf
Invitational & Evening Reception. In their role
as Title Sponsor, they have done so much for us
and we are truly thankful. We are so fortunate
that we have Carolyn Thompson, Rob’s Assistant,
and Lauri Moore serving not only on the golf
committee, but as the newest members of our
CICL Advisory Board. Never has a Title Sponsor
reached out to the Center in this capacity. In
addition, we were privileged to have Mr. Rob
Forsyth, Vice President & General Manager
introduce our Center staff to the sales staff at
AT&T and allow us to share the mission and
vision of our program. We also have Stacey Ross
and Kayti O’Toole lining up our 25 AT&T
volunteers for the day. We are looking forward to
another record breaking year and it would not be
possible without support from our new Title
Sponsor AT&T. Here’s to rethinking possible…
(ECE) community and parents to make sure that all
children arrive safely.
With today’s fast paced society and families more mobile
than ever, those who care for children need to design a
routine that creates a reminder that a child is in the car.
See helpful tips below.
Top Tips
• If you see an unattended child in a car, dial 911
immediately.
• Make it part of your every day routine to account for all
children in your care.
• Never leave a baby unattended in a vehicle, even with the
window slightly open.
• Place something that you will need at your next stop –
for example, a purse, lunch, gym bag or briefcase – on
the floor of the backseat where the child is sitting. This
simple act could prevent you from accidentally forgetting
your child if he or she is sleeping. Use a stuffed animal in
the front seat or note as a reminder.
• Be especially careful if you change your routine for
dropping off babies at child care. Have a plan that if your
child is late for child care, you will be called within a few
minutes.
• Teach children not to play in any vehicle.
• Always lock a vehicle’s doors and trunk – especially at
home. Do not overlook sleeping babies.
• Check to ensure all children leave the vehicle when you
reach your destination.
• Always make a habit of looking in the vehicle - front and
back - before locking the door and walking away.
Special thanks
to Amtrak
for their
continued support
of the Annual
SIDS Golf
invitational. Each
year the train
auction packages creating last minute bidding wars.
This year will be no exception!
Corporate sponsorship is critical to the Center as it
directly supports bereavement services to families and
community education. Thank you to Paul Siegel for
your assistance.
Parent’s Corner
In Loving Memory of
Ronnie Shanholtzer ~ October 11, 2006 - June 10, 2012
To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Laura Bradley
and my husband’s name is
Ronald Shanholtzer. I am
writing you the letter to be
enclosed with the Golf
program. I think that this is a
very great way to honor his
name; my son Ronald
Bradley Shanholtzer (aka
Ronnie).
When I was 7 months pregnant, my husband and I
were told that Ronnie had a very rare form of
Congenital Heart Disease. The day he was born,
10/11/2006, he was immediately put on the ventilator.
Ronnie had his first open heart surgery at just five days
old; he would still have four more surgeries before he
would be well enough to go home.
Ronnie was discharged from the hospital at
approximately 8-9 months old. Ronnie was not eating
by mouth so he had a G-tube in his belly. At about 6-8
months later he had to be rushed into the OR due to
the pressure in his heart being too high.
Even through all the turmoil he was the happiest,
loving, caring, and everything you could only wish for
in a child. He has been through more life changing
events than any man, woman, or child will ever have in
their whole life.
Ronnie was very smart; he had a strong passion toward
his family and the Ravens. Ronnie was one of those kids
who “knew it all.”
Just a little about my angel sent from above.
Ronnie was never sad; he was the happiest child I had
ever met in all my 30 years of living on this earth. He
loved everyone and everyone loved him back. He was a
true angel. Ronnie gave me and the rest of his family a
reason to live.
I want to do this to honor his name and I want to show
the whole world what Ronnie at 5 showed adults, and
that was that there is a love that is unconditional.
True love!
On the day of June 10, 2012, Ronnie’s life sadly came to
an end. He had his last and final heart surgery, stayed
at Hopkins for 3 weeks and came home. He graduated
the Saturday after he came home. We had a
graduation/welcome home party for him. Ronnie had
so much fun at the party. Then on June 10, 2012 he
was rushed to the hospital, at 12PM on that day, Ronnie
was pronounced deceased at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
I feel this is another spot where he can be all around
the country. Ronnie will always live in our hearts and in
our memories.
Love You Mommy & Daddy
Thank you so much for your sympathy GOD BLESS
you and your family.
God’s
Littlest
Angel
We cried as you left, but our family is strong.
Side by side or miles apart.
We always felt happy, just thinking of you.
We cried and cried till our eyes dried.
What is left besides reality?
Broken dreams and unfinished deeds.
We cried and prayed as you simply began your
journey away.
I prayed for you to turn and say, I’ll stay!
We cried as we left from seeing you one last time.
But we will always remember the times that we
laughed and the times we cried.
And I will always remember the day that we met.
YOUR BIRTHDAY!!!
When an Angel was born
You will always be in our hearts,
GOOO RAVENS!
Love always,
Mommy & Daddy
Team JEM Ride
Our sponsors came through once again. There were 40 plus
giveaways and raffles and a silent auction. Daniels Restaurant
has been a huge part of the event since the beginning. Old
Glory Harley Davidson, LoJack, Utz and Ski Liberty
Mountain as well as many others have made this benefit
possible. Please see our website, www.rideforsids.com for a
full list of sponsors, and please use their goods and services.
These are generous and caring folks.
Dawn learned to ride in 2007 and after attending a benefit
ride with her husband and her best friend, they came up
with this ride and have never looked back. Dawn, Joe,
Christina, Jack and Sharon as well as others, have worked
to make this event a success.
1st Annual
Celebrating Dakota
in the Park
On July 28th, little
more than a month
after 4 month old
Dakota Kindrick
died, friends and
family gathered at
Millard-Cooper Park
in Sykesville MD to
honor his memory
and raise money for
the Center for
Infant & Child Loss.
The Kindrick family table was overflowing with beautiful
pictures of Dakota for all to see.
The french fries were delicious, made to order and Italian Ice
was just what everyone needed on a very hot day. Personal
items and a variety of items for the home were also for sale.
Vendors who attended: Scentsy, Veleta, Thirty-One Bags,
Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, Cookie Lee, Tupperware,
Mary Kay, Bath Fitter, Rita’s, and Aww Boy Fries.
Special thanks to Jennifer Ebert and Emily Pattison for
their help in organizing.
was a great day for a great cause. Thanks one and all.
The ride was established in memory of Jack McClung III, infant
son of Dawn Burger and Jack McClung, who died of SIDS in 1982.
The family noted that the Center for Infant & Child Loss
provided tremendous support after Jack died and when
subsequent children were born years later. It is the family’s
wish to help others who suffer the tragedy of child loss and
made the vision of the “Ride for SIDS” a reality! THANK YOU!
We have already begun planning for the 2013 Annual
Team JEM 3 Ride! For more information or if you would
like to be part of the 2013 Ride for SIDS Committee, please
Mosaic Project for New Pediatric
Emergency Department
The University of Maryland Medical
Center has a new emergency facility
located on the corner of Penn and
Lombard Streets. A separate
Pediatric Emergency Department is
exclusively dedicated to serving the
needs of infants, children and
teenagers. There is a separate triage
area, playroom and waiting area
designed for pediatric patients.
In addition, there are 16 pediatric treatment areas, many
of which are glass enclosed, providing a quiet and safe
environment. These rooms are spacious in order to
improve patient and family comfort for evaluation and
management of simple problems to more complex issues
that require admission.
In the near future, a giant wall mosaic will be installed in the
waiting area. The mosaic has been constructed by pediatric
patients, staff and volunteers over the last few months. The
Center participated for an evening with “Friends of the
Center” volunteers contributing their creative talents. See
photo to get an idea of the size of the project. Hopefully, the
project will be complete at the time of the next newsletter.
The Center’s goal is to assist families as they learn to live
with the loss of their child and to have hope for the future.
Our programs reach out to bereaved families and the
community. Center programs foster hope by offering public
education, health care provider training, and instruction for
emergency responders and others who may provide support.
Each of our four programs is designed to meet individual,
family, and community needs. For those families who do
experience the sudden death of an infant or child, the Center
