Twenty-Three Years
and Still Supporting
Led by St. Benedict’s LONA committee (Local
Organization of Nursing Assistants) for honoring
and advancing the career of Certified Nursing
Assistant, St. Benedict’s has been one of the greatest
sponsors of United Way Dickinson since 1990.
Many employees at St. Benedict’s make periodic
donations through payroll deductions while other
staff members, residents, families, and visitors make
contributions by supporting the regular fundraising
activities held on campus; such as, bake sales,
employee lunch sales, jeans week, and many more.
St. Benedict’s United Way Committee
representatives Joanne Faulhaber and Kathy
Schumacher were invited to United Way of
Dickinson Board of Director’s Annual Meeting
luncheon on April 8th at the Elks and were
recognized with the Gold Award for raising $6,500
in 2012. The award and a plaque were given in front
of nearly 90 community members in appreciation
for our continuous support and increased employee
participation through all the years.
The committee is currently striving to fundraise for

the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer’s movement
in September for the cure of Alzheimer’s disease
that affects 5.4 million Americans. Your donations
will transform to footprints displayed in the hallway
of St. Benedict’s facility and each footprint will
help us become one step closer to end Alzheimer’s.

Mission Retreat
Presented by Sister Lisa
St. Benedict’s Mission Committee, consisting
of representatives from each department, held
their annual retreat in February, in conjunction
with the Feast of St. Scholastica. The annual
Mission Retreat is an opportunity for Mission
Committee members to spend a day away from
the facility to grow in the roles as Mission
Leaders to assist all of our staff in integrating St.
Benedict’s Mission and Core Values in everything
we do every day in our work. This year, the
education was provided by Sister Lisa Mauer, one
of our sponsoring Sisters of the St. Scholastica
Monastry in Duluth, Minnesota with the focus
on The Rule of St. Benedict. In addition to the
education, the Committee also spent quality time
on strategic planning for the coming fiscal year
during the retreat.

Volunteers Are Beyond Measure
Every year we hold a volunteer
appreciation party dedicatedly designed and
prepared to show our deepest appreciation for the
devotion of time and talents that our volunteers give
to support our Mission of providing quality care for
those who we serve.
This year is no exception, with nearly 100 volunteers
responded to the invitation and attended the party
themed “Volunteers are Beyond Measure” on April
21st in St. Benedict’s Dining Room. Guests did not
only enjoy the theme-echoed layered pound cakes
with a mellow guitar background music brought by
Jonathon Moral from Dickinson State University,
they were also delighted to see and receive the gift
of a handy tape measure, that measures everything
except for their selfless giving and loving.
It is blissful that St. Benedict’s receives the support
of approximately 250 voluntary hours each month
from the community, which indicates that many
gracious accomplishments for our residents wouldn’t
had been done without the gifts of
our volunteers and donors. Please
continuously extend your help that
enables St. Benedict’s to constantly
make improvements for everyone
we serve. As Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow once said, “Give what
you have. To someone, it may be
better than you dare to think.”

St. Benedict’s Annual Phonathon Call for Loving Support
At St. Benedict’s, we’ve been very fortunate to have
constant support from our volunteers by giving their
precious time and talents to help create an environment
where health, independence and choice come to life on a
daily basis. Our Phonathon, one of the most important
annual fundraising events for St. Benedict’s, gathered 19
volunteers this year to contact our community members via
phone for donations through the evenings of March 24 th ,
25 th , 26 th , April 7 th , and 8 th for the future campus renovation
projects. With volunteers’ help, we’ve raised increased
amounts this year that enables us to continuously make
improvements and provide quality care for our residents.
Please join us to thank our Phonathon volunteers for their devotion, and accept
our sincere appreciation for your generous gifts. If you were not reached during the
Phonathon, please consider sending us a gift to help us take care of the expanding
needs in the growing community. As you like, we also welcome your gift given in

Crab Crack on the Prairie
a Crack’in Good Time
St. Benedict’s 1st annual Crab Crack on the
Prairie fundraiser dinner event was true to its name
– fun, scrumptious, and novel. It gathered a sold-out
crowd of nearly 300 community members enjoying
each other’s company while having a full table of
savory crab legs, BBQ ribs, baked potato, coleslaw,
bread sticks, dessert pies, and an assortment of beers
and hard ciders to choose from. In conjunction with
the background acoustic guitar music presented by
musician Shawn Oban from Bismarck, the evening
was described by many as “perfect”.
We thank all of our sponsors and donors for their
support, as it becomes significantly important for
the cause of our future campus renovation projects.
We are also in great gratitude to our volunteer wait
staff from the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and
Ladies for their ongoing faithful support; Once again,
Crab Crack on the Prairie is a fun and delicious fundraising
dinner event that provides an unprecedented crakin’ good time.

Wellness Program to Further Enhance Your Health
Doctors and experts always remind us to take
30 minutes of exercises at least three times a week for
the betterment of our personal health. As a leading
health care provider, St. Benedict’s implements this
common yet important concept and carry it out
through a personally tailored Wellness Program for
our residents. The Program helps develop the habit of
exercising with expected positive outcomes including
increasing functional capacity and range-of-motion;
enhanced balance; increased bone density; improving
endurance and social skills; decreasing incontinence;
and helping each person achieve their ultimate
restorative health goals.
The Wellness Program adopts the philosophies
of assessment and classes designed by an exercise
physiologist, carried out through the efforts of our
Activity and Restorative Nursing Departments,
providing activities that both long-term stay and
short-term rehabilitation residents at St. Benedict’s
can join. The classes are planned based on careful
measurement of participants’ capacities. While
enjoying the fun-filled activities, residents are
enabled to strengthen their flexibility and stability
that eventually help them to regain independence.
In addition to the physical perks, participants can
also stay social while having interactions with their
instructors and peers.
Currently, the program takes place one to two times
a week. But it will continue to expand so that more
residents can benefit from it, and moreover, build a
good habit of making exercising a routine.

honor the Feast

we celebrate the
focused Core
Value of the
year by creating
a representable
art work to share
the ideology of
our Core Value
along with special
prayers with
everyone in the community. This year, We centered
around the Core Value of Justice and created a
mosaic composed of pictures
of our residents, families, staff
members and visitors on campus
to convey the message that
justice brings the unseen Lord
visible, it is the foundation
of everything we do in every
day life, especially here at St.
Benedict’s.
Besides the celebration of our
Core Values, our Feast Day
has become one of the most
welcomed day for everyone
at St. Benedict’s because it is
the time the recipient of the
Sister Claudia Riehl Living a
Legacy Award is announced.
The recipient is selected from
a field of staff candidates, all of
whom are nominated by their
co-workers. This award continuously recognizes
individual employees who model their commitment
to the Mission and Core Values by practicing those
in the work they do. Each employee nominated for
the honor helps continue Sister Claudia’s legacy of
bringing the Mission and Core Values to life.
This year, Kathy Schumacher, who serves as a CNA
and Unit Team Leader at St. Benedict’s Health
Center, was selected for this honor because of her
tireless dedication for St. Benedict’s for over 22
years. She always puts the needs of others before
her own, praises and credits the accomplishments
of others, and goes above and beyond her job
expectations to provide first rate care for the
residents. She has an absolutely positive influence
on her coworkers by showing her perseverance,
compassion and respectful
manner with all she meets.

Ways to Give
Outright and life income gifts to St. Benedict’s Health Center can be made in different ways. Donors
frequently make gifts using cash, stocks, bonds, mutual fund shares, personal property, works of art, real
estate or other assets. Gifts are eligible for deductions from Federal and State income taxes for those
taxpayers who itemize deductions.
As we focus on the future, you can participate in our Mission by including St. Benedict’s Health Center
in your estate plans. This can be done through naming us as beneficiary of your will, life insurance
policies, charitable trust or gift annuities.
