Summer blessings to you! Ah, summertime. When the church programs grind to
a sleepy pace, our ministries shut down for the season, and the lay and clergy
leadership go into hibernation until being re-born in the fall. Not on your life! From
the 150 kids at VBS, to youth mission trips, to major transformations, St. Peter’s is
very much a place of excitement and energy this summer. I recently attended the
Illinois Conference – UCC Annual Meeting/Celebration. The Keynote speaker was
Dr. Diana Butler-Bass, a noted theologian and author. Many things that she said
about spiritual renewal piqued my interest, but I particularly appreciated her
comment on the difference between change and transformation. She said that
change just happens, but transformation is intentional. As a mid-summer’s FYI,
I share with you several of the transformational moments in the recent life of our
congregation…
Karen King, our Director of Children’s Ministries, has been granted a medical
leave of absence. Please keep Karen and her family in your prayers as she
continues her struggles with Cancer.
In Karen’s absence, church member and retired educator Claudia Burgener
will be serving as our Children’s Ministries Interim. Please welcome Claudia to
this new role when you see her.
I thank you for my service of installation and reception on June 2, and look
forward to many years together as pastor and congregation. The $875 from
the service’s offering collection was given to, and was much appreciated by,
the Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry.
To transform the lives of our young people, and the people they serve on our
behalf through their mission trips, the Core Missions Team has granted $10,000
to the SYF mission trips, encouraging the youth and their leaders to “dream big”
for the next two years.
Part of the mission of our Endowment Fund, is to use a portion of the generated
earnings for special ministries and projects. Refurbishment of our bell tower,
a new church telephone system, and providing the stipend for a seminary
intern to begin this fall are among the Fund’s recipients this year, having been
approved by our Board of Deacons and Church Council. I am extremely excited
and blessed to share the news about the latest project. One of our members
began exploring what we, as a church, might do to address the gun violence
epidemic in the city of Chicago. With two of our sister congregations (Covenant

UCC in South Holland, and Park Manor UCC on Chicago’s Southside) we will
begin a partnership to assist with the “Young Prophets” ministry. Already
successful at Covenant Church, this youth empowerment program will be
planted at Park Manor, one of the main areas affected by the neighborhood
violence epidemic. St. Peter’s will be granting $25,000 (!) to get the program
going. We also hope to become a partner congregation with Park Manor in a
number of other ways.
The Church Council participated in a day-long off-site time of reflection, with
the theme: “Holy GPS—where are we going, and how do we get there.” Action
plans were devised, and you will be hearing about their implementation soon.
The “Just Do It!” list for the church’s future is reflective of the vision and input
from the congregation that has developed over the past few years. These
action items are also in keeping with our mission statement: “Love God.
Nurture Faith. Share Gifts.”
Here’s the just-do-it list:
Provide adequate directional signage throughout the building.
Create a membership growth and marketing team.
Make disciples, not just members (congregational spiritual growth)
Infuse more storytelling/testimony of transformed lives in our
worship and communication.
Create a technology team.
Summer: a time to kick back and relax? Nope. We’re just getting warmed up!

Growing a Church…
As many of us watch our flower and vegetable gardens grow
this summer, we may turn our thoughts to the question:
“How do you grow a church?”
In their recent consideration of this question,
the Church Council is aware that growing a church
is an intentional process. In addition to being led by the
Spirit, congregations seeking growth need to consider
community demographics, telling the St. Peter’s story
in a variety of ways, sharing our vision with those inside
and outside the church, and enlisting the worshipping
community in the ministry of growth. The Council has voted
to form a ministry team to drive this process.
The “Membership Growth and Marketing Team”
will be formed to lead all evangelism and
information/communication ministries.
If you have gifts in the areas of hospitality, marketing,
or telling the St. Peter’s story, this team is calling you.
All those interested in learning more about church growth,
and leading the effort to make it happen, are invited to
become part of the M&M Team.

A View
From the Pew...
I had the privilege of attending the
49th Illinois Conference “Celebration”
at the Double Tree Hotel in Oak Brook
on June 14th and 15th. There was a
minister present from the church in
Angola that we help support. That
means as a partner we supply funds
and an occasional missionary. The
church in Angola has a long history
and held on during a twenty year war.
There was no significant legislation
passed this year. General Synod is
meeting in late June, 28th thru
July 2nd and everyone is waiting to
see what comes from that.
The biggest change this year was
the number of youth present, around
sixty. They were under the able
leadership of Martha Mendoza from
the First Congregational Church here
in Elmhurst. It would be nice to see
youth from St. Peter’s UCC attend
next June in Springfield, IL.

Secretary’s Report
We welcomed our confirmation class of 19 into membership on May 5th.
Average weekly attendance for May 2013 was 210. Average weekly attendance for May 2012 was 203.
Church membership as of May 31, 2013 was 958 with 1 removal.
President’s Report
Prayers for strength and recovery continue for Karen King who will be taking a medical leave of absence.
Claudia Burgener will be overseeing St. Peter’s Children’s Ministries during Karen’s absence.
Mary Donahue has volunteered to serve as co-chair with Jane Stephens-Smith of the cemetery committee.
Tim Lothian has completed his Eagle Scout beautification project.
Committee Reports
Deacons
A request for Endowment Funds has been submitted and approved by council. $25,000.00 will fund a grant to
address youth on youth violence. The grant to Covenant UCC in South Holland will be used to plant the successful
Young Prophets program at Park Manor UCC on the far south side.
The core mission team has met the current shortfall of funds experienced by our SYF mission group.
$10,000.00 has been given to offset costs for this year’s trip to Sunset Gap and to provide seed money for “think big”
opportunities of the future.

August 4 - Called to Care will celebrate Lillian Roberts with a birthday celebration at Elmhurst Lexington Square.
Save the Date! September 8 - Homecoming Sunday (Rally Day) sponsored by the Council.

Projects in progress include the parlor/and north stairwell roof, lighting retrofitting in Room 1.
Bids for stair treads, bell tower louvers, and carpet cleaning are being reviewed.
Income for May 2013 was $27,582.68; May 2012 was $30,398.42.
Expenses for May 2013 were $39,241.09; May 2012 were $37,587.87.
The operating fund balance as of May 31, 2013 was $77,103.06.
Missions Paid as of June 15th, 2013: $1,800-Back Bay Mission; $2,500-PADS; $4,000-Adult Christian Care;
$1,800-Just DuPage; $5,500-Elmhurst College Scholarship; $7,625-OCWM; $1,600-Elmhurst College General Fund;
$2,500-Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry; $1,000-Youth Mission Trip; $5,000-Iliff School of Theology.
Other Giving: Souper Bowl of Caring-$741.26; Yorkfield Food Pantry-$195; One Great Hour of Sharing-$125;
The Lenten Project raised $3,634 for the Elmhurst Walk-in Ministry.
The Easter Sunrise Breakfast raised $356 for the Youth Mission Trip.

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL
This program is designed for children entering grades
Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades. The curriculum will cover
lessons on relating positively to God and others. The children will listen to
stories and watch movies from Mr. Quigley’s Village and Max Lucado.
Take advantage of this opportunity to serve the children of St. Peter’s:

Vacation Bible School:
Everywhere FUN FAIR where GOD’S WORLD COMES TOGETHER
was a HUGE success!
A big “THANK YOU!” to everyone who prayed for VBS. The Lord sent us
the perfect leaders and assistants,
the most fabulous teen support team,
the most awesome children, and
the kindest, most thoughtful volunteers who provided the snacks for our 153 children and 50
staff people.
YOU made EVERYWHERE FUN FAIR a success!
The 100 children in the K-5 program enjoyed a week filled with Bible storytelling, crafts, music and
science activities. They learned about depending on God, daring to care (about others), claiming
Jesus (for themselves), and choosing to follow (Jesus). They brought in food for our local Yorkfield
Food Pantry each day to fill our cart.
Our 53 middle school Service Squad went into the community each day to do service, they:
made lunches for PADS
donated $120.00 worth of needed items to the Yorkfield Food Pantry
worked with children at Easter Seals
worked with mentally and physically disabled children at Access Sports in Elmhurst
collected and donated $600.00 in quarters to Feed My Starving Children
(this will feed 64 children for a whole year)
packed meals at Feed My Starving Children

at the worship services during July.
Many of you know that Matthew Hogan is
not only an exceptional organist, but he
also is a professional bassoonist playing in
several orchestras in the Chicago/Indiana
area. Matt will be in the Special Music spot
of the service where he will inspire and add
to the service. Accompanying Matt will be
Mary Lou Saville.

A String group will be joining us in worship
from Oberlin, Ohio. The ensemble is
directed by Peter Slowik, Credo. It promises
to be a wonderful morning experience.
David Miranda, tenor, will bring us a solo
that enriches the message of the day and

The Men are Coming! Yes, the St. Peter’s
Men’s Ensemble are ready to sing, bringing
us the feeling of strength and unity.

MISSION - A CHRISTIAN PERFORMANCE GROUP DEDICATED TO SHARING THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST
THROUGH THE MINISTRIES OF MUSIC, SERVICE, FELLOWSHIP, AND PARTICIPATION IN THE LIFE OF THE CHURCH.
OUR HISTORY, WHO WE ARE, WHERE WE GO...
In 1972, the choir director of Main Street United Methodist Church in Alton, Illinois started a small choir made up of
eleven youth from the church. They called themselves “Love Eleven”. The following year the membership grew to 36. That
year, they prepared a musical entitled “The Encounter”, which ultimately became the official name for the group. The
Methodist Annual Conference invited the group to perform that year. A Navy captain heard them sing at the conference and
extended them an invitation to sing at the naval base in Orlando, Florida. Suddenly, the group was on its way to Florida,
where they sang at the base before an audience of 1500 service men and women. As part of the tour, they performed at
several churches along the route and in the Orlando area.
ENCOUNtER is a group of Christian youth from 9th through 12th grade that represent over 32 churches in the Alton area.
Traditionally, rehearsals have begun each year in January, with the first performance on Easter Sunday at Main Street United
Methodist Church, the sponsor church.
ENCOUNtER is open to any denomination and auditions are not required to become a member. However, a member must have
written permission from his/her parent to join.
ENCOUNtER is not merely a place to sing and have fun. It is a place where
young Christian people can grow and mature in their relationship with
one another and in their walk with God.
ENCOUNtER is self-supported, earning money through fund-raisers,
contributions and gifts from individuals, businesses,
and organizations in the area.
ENCOUNtER performs 10 to 15 times a
season at local area churches.
