TYPA Basic Baseball Rules
1. Baseball involves two teams. In each inning, one team will field while the other team bats. The batting
team tries to score runs by hitting the ball into fair territory and then running around the baseball
diamond (1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base and home). The fielding team tries to stop the batting team from
scoring a run by getting them “out”. When the fielding team gets 3 outs, it is the fielding team’s turn
to bat.
2. Playing Numbers
K-1/T-Ball
Maximum 12 players per team.
All players play the field each inning.
Minors & Majors
Maximum 12 Players per team.
All players will play the field with six playing the infield (catcher, 1st, 2nd, 3rd base, short stop
and pitcher). The “outfield” is determined by the baseball diamond. All fielders must begin in
their respective positions for each new pitch.
Each player must rotate their fielding position at least once per game.
3. Batting
K-1/T-Ball
Players will receive up to 5 swings off the tee. If the player does not hit the ball into fair territory
after the 5 th swing then the coach will “guide” the player into hitting the ball into fair territory.
Teams continue batting until all players in attendance have batted once in that particular inning.
Every child will have one chance to bat per inning. We will be playing with outs.
Minors (2 nd /3 rd gr)
Players will receive up to 3 pitches from the machine.
If the batter does not hit the ball into fair territory on any of these 3 pitches, he/she will be allowed
to place the ball onto a TEE and take 1 final swing. If he/she does not hit the ball into play then
he/she will be called out.
Majors (4 th /5 th gr)
Players will receive up to 5 pitches from the machine.
A batter will be allowed 3 strikes per at bat.
The 5 th pitch will be the final pitch regardless of the strike count UNLESS the batter hits a foul
ball. The batter can continue to foul off subsequent pitches.
Minors & Majors
Bunting will not be allowed. Balls must be batted outside the 3-meter zone in front of home plate
to be counted as fair.
We will be playing with 3 outs.
A batter is “out” when the following occur:
o They hit a ball that is caught before the ball hits the ground
o The ball is thrown to the first-baseman and the first-baseman touches the base with their
foot while the ball is in their glove or hand.
o Any member of the fielding team tags the batter with the ball or the glove containing the
ball while they are running between bases or not standing on the base.

4. “Free Hit Zone” (not for K-1/T-Ball)
There will be a 10-foot circle (3 meters) drawn around the pitching machine. This area is called the
“free hit zone.”
Players are not allowed to field the ball in this area.
5. Base Running
Runners must stop when any fair play ball is thrown back to and caught by the pitcher position player
(who is standing on or very close to the pitching circle) or adult umpire standing at pitchers mound.
All players who are not half way to the next base must return to the last base they touched. The player
is automatically ruled safe at that base.
No stealing or leadoffs. Each baserunner must stay on the base until contact has been made by the
batter.
No sliding will be allowed.
No catcher blocking. The runner will be deemed safe if the catcher is blocking the 3rd base line or
home plate.
No taking the defender out on a play. The runner will be out if he is trying to break up a play.
A baserunner who gets hit by a ball that is hit by his/her team is out.
6. Overthrows
All overthrows will result in all base runners advancing one extra base only.
7. Uniforms
Players MUST always wear their uniforms and caps. All players should tuck their game shirts during
the games. Helmets MUST be worn while at bat, on deck and while on base.
.
8. Time Limit
K-1/T-Ball
Practices are 30 minutes. Games will be limited to a maximum of 45 minutes. Games must end by
1:15pm.
Minors & Majors
Games are limited to l hour and 30 minutes or 6 innings. No new inning may begin after 1 hour
and 15 minutes.
