A1 -‐ HE DIED ALONE.
WAS HE AT PEACE? WAS HE ON THE RUN?
The Mount School
9 & 16 March 9:30 to 12:30
How has one dead body changed what we thought we knew about
history and medical science?
The body of a man found in 1991 has already changed our view of
history and medical science. How can one corpse do this? He's
caused so much debate he's still denied a burial. His body has
revealed secrets which conflict with accepted views, clearly answer
some questions, but raise many new ones.
Curious? Come and unlock how one man's death can alter
perceptions of historical truth and medical science.
A3 -‐ LANGUAGE: MAN’S WAY OUT OF CHAOS
Manor CE Academy
9 & 16 March 9:30 to 12:30
Language is man’s solution to the chaotic world around him: a way to
make sense of our existence and a way to communicate with others
to create harmonious living. How did language begin? What does and
does not constitute a language? Why are there so many different
languages in our world? In this unique workshop event, you will look
at the history of language, made up languages in popular culture and
have the chance to create a brand new language of your own. Sign up
for this masterclass and create order out of the chaos!
A4 -‐ BIG BANG, BIG SKY
Bootham School
9 & 16 March 1:30 to 4:30
Everything began in an enormously violent explosion known as the
“Big Bang”, which created space, time, energy and matter all at once.
Somehow, this ultimate chaos gave us the universe we see today,
with all its detail and pattern. The phases of the Moon, the turning of
the seasons and even the life cycles of stars follow rules that we can
use to predict what will happen in the future. We’ll be looking at
how this apparent harmony comes about, and how life in the
universe might fit into the picture. Students joining this course will
become members of the Bootham Astronomical Observatory, and
will be able to come on observing nights to use the school’s
telescopes, and learn a little about practical observation.
Masterclass places go quickly – get your application in
to your school as soon as possible.
Remember it’s important that you commit to
attending both sessions of your chosen masterclass.
A5 -‐ GET STARTED IN CHINESE
Manor CE Academy
9 & 16 March 9:30 to 12:30
Develop four skills in the Chinese language: listening, speaking,
reading, and writing. Learn how to greet each other and ask
questions such as: Where do you live? What is your name /
nationality? What time is it now? What’s the weather like? By the
end of the masterclass, you should be able to carry out a short
conversation in Chinese, be able to recognise up to 50 characters,
and be able to write up to 20 characters. Moreover, you will have a
taste of some Chinese culture, such as using chopsticks and Chinese
calligraphy.
A6 -‐ THINK DIFFERENT
Manor CE Academy
9 & 16 March 9:30 to 12:30
Apple boss Steve Jobs once famously encouraged people to ‘think
different’. He said that the ‘people who think they are crazy enough
to change the world, are the ones that do.’ Have you ever wondered
what makes people stand out? How a simple speech can influence
generations of people? How some people can just get others to
follow them? Whatever your talent, whatever subject area your
strength, whatever ambitions you have, leadership skills will be at
the heart of your success. Throughout history, famous leaders have
shone above the rest because they had something, they thought
differently. Come and join us in a masterclass which investigates
how leadership can create and resolve conflict, can be essential
times of chaos and resolve these into harmony. We'll work on what
makes an outstanding leader and how that could be you.
A7 -‐ PAPER SCULPTURE AND FRACTALS
Manor CE Academy
9 & 16 March 9:30 to 12:30
Discover harmony and order in nature with fractals; patterns such as
Fibonacci's sequence and the Golden Section which artists have used
for centuries to guide their work. Now you can use them to inspire
beautiful sculptures made from paper. You will be amazed by what
can be achieved with such a simple material.
