HISTORY HISTORY
A business man’s vision of building a city
full of opportunity and new beginnings for
its citizens . . B.S. Barnes
uncompromising passion was the
foundation of what is now known as
Ponca City.
Following the depression of 1892,
Barnes made plans to build a new city in
the recently opened Cherokee Strip. He
headed south along the old trade route
(now Hwy 177) and stopped to water his
horses at a fresh water spring (now 13 th
and South Ave.). Close by he saw a
crossing over the Arkansas River on the
east, and a railroad crossing on the west
and said, “This is the perfect place to build
my new city!”
Barnes formed the “Ponca Townsite
Company,” which sold certificates for lots
to individuals for business or residential
occupation. On Saturday, September 16,
1893, he made the Land Run and claimed
the area. Then he began the surveying to
lay out the lots. On Sept. 21, standing on
the south side of the block along Grand
Ave. between 3 rd and 4 th Streets, he drew
names from a box, matching them with the
lot descriptions. The next day, the “new”
citizens gathered and elected B.S. Barnes
the first mayor of Ponca City.
