NOTES AT NOON The TNT Jazz Band is performing for the Auxiliary’s popular Notes at Noon in the Hunter courtyard. HEALTH EDUCATION COMMITTEE ready to kick off 10 th year of lectures The Auxiliary’s Health Education Lecture Committee will begin its 10 th consecutive year of noontime lectures. These talks, which are free and open to the public as well as to Auxiliary members, are usually on the third Thursday of the month in the first floor lounge of the Grace building, 25 Park Street (the former Nursing School building). Dessert and beverage is provided as well as free parking in the Physicians Building garage on Howard Avenue. “The committee is able to take advantage of the proximity and close relationship of the hospital and the Yale University School of Medicine, thereby providing us with the best minds that the world of science and medicine has to offer,” said committee chair Stephanie Jatlow. “We are most fortunate that the faculty and staff are most generous with their time and knowledge.” Dr. Robert Udelsman, chief and chairman of the department of surgery, will kick off the 2004-05 lectures on September 15, speaking about “Minimally Invasive Surgery – New Developments.” On October 20, YNHH dietitian, Lisa Tartamella- Kimmel, M.S., R.D. C.D.-N., will speak on “Nutrition – the Battle of the Bulge.” In November, a members-only session will show Auxilians how to navigate the Internet to learn about the better Internet sites for medical information. In 2005, the Grace Building will no longer be available, so most likely, the health education lectures will be held in the evening in the East Pavilion cafeteria. Last year’s Auxiliary’s lectures were extremely well received. In October, a panel including Drs. Ron Adelman, David Parke and Dr. Bruce Shields, chairman and chief of ophthalmology, discussed eye diseases, with an emphasis on macular degeneration. Attendees learned about recent advances in treatment for eye diseases and had “hands on experience” with demonstrations of low vision equipment. “Fibromyalgia, A Painful Condition,” was the subject of November’s talk given by Dr. Janine Evans, a YNHH rheumatologist and associate clinical professor of Internal Medicine. This condition, which often includes debilitating pain, has no complete cure and no discernable cause. Coincidentally, a number of people who attended the meeting were from a support group whose members suffer from “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,” a similar condition, and some “networking” did take place. Tucker Leary, vice-president of Yale-New Haven Hospital, addressed the group in March. He explained the complicated and controversial prescription drug benefits for seniors, which were then about to be released. The series concluded with Sally Shaywitz, M.D., professor of pediatrics, who with her husband, Bennett, founded and co-direct the Yale Center for Learning and Attention. She discussed her findings about dyslexia in her recent book, “Overcoming Dyslexia, A New and Complete Science Based on Reading at Any Level.” Dr. Shaywitz described dyslexia as one of the most common learning disabilities and disputed the common misconception that boys suffer more from it, saying dyslexia occurs equally in both males and females. She explained that the condition is often accompanied by surprising abilities in problem solving, reasoning and creative thinking, and called it “an island of weakness in a sea of strengths.” Tucker Leary, Vice President, Physician Development and speaker at the March Auxiliary health lecture on “A Prescription for Understanding Medicare’s New Drug Benefit,” is seen with (l-r) Barbara Loucks, Alex Koontz and Stephanie Jatlow. The popular golf outing benefits the Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital Toy Closets Program, which is a project of the Yale-New Haven Hospital Auxiliary. The annual event is the major funding source for the Toy Closets Program. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. A continental breakfast, greens fee, cart rental, beverages on the course, awards luncheon, gift and prizes are all included in the package. “The 10 th Annual Toy Closets Golf Outing was a huge success,” said Debbie Klotzer. “With over 288 golfers for our 10 th anniversary, we collected money to support funding for toys, recreational, educational, artistic and therapeutic activities. Each golfer received a coffee mug which had their golf foursome picture on it.” page 3
