Technologies Explained – DreamLabo 5000
Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE)
FINE is Canon’s unique print head manufacturing process that uses nano-technology to
produce highly-accurate print heads. All sections of the print head are developed using
photolithographic processes with semiconductor exposure systems to ensure that the
nozzle dimensions, ink ejection openings and heater positions are aligned with
extremely high precision. This enables microscopic ink droplets to be ejected with
prescribed volume and accurate placement. By extending its FINE technology, Canon
has a newly developed high-density print head enabling the printing of output up to
305 mm wide. This super-wide print head is suitable for production photo printing of
exceptional high quality.
One-Pass Printing
The new super-wide print head is able to print at a resolution of 2400 dpi across the full
width of the paper, which means that high speed printing by the print head, which
remains in a fixed position, can be achieved in one pass of the paper. When used in
combination with the automatic Double-sided Printing function (a standard feature in
the printer), the DreamLabo 5000 is capable of printing the contents of a 20-page A4-
sized photo album in just 72 seconds 1 and the printing of 40 photo prints (102 x
152mm) in one minute.
Seven-colour ink system
The DreamLabo 5000 uses a seven-colour dye-based ink system to achieve the high
quality printing of photographs that the press outputs. In addition to cyan, magenta,
yellow and black, the system includes photo cyan, photo magenta and grey to provide
smooth gradation expression, especially in highlighted areas of a photo. Furthermore,
compared with print systems that create grey through the combination of only the four
CMYK colours, the inclusion of grey ink contributes to rich colour gradation, while
supporting stable colour reproduction, in colour photographs.
Digital Photo Image Enhancement
The optional Digital Photo Image Enhancement automatically analyses the shooting
scenes of images, determining the appropriate corrective adjustments for optimal print
results. The DreamLabo 5000 supports the creation of beautiful high-quality photo
prints without the need for lengthy colour calibration procedures by experienced
operators.
Image Processing Technology
The DreamLabo 5000 employs Image Processing Technology that makes use of the full
range of Canon’s unique inkjet colour gamut. The system is capable of infusing images
with a sense of transparency through the reproduction of bright, high-saturation blues
and yellows in bright areas of images for a level of expression difficult to achieve with
silver halide photography. Additionally, through an improved ability to reproduce dark,
deep colours in dark areas of images, the printer is also able to impart images with a
feeling of gravity.
Double Paper Magazine System
The printer’s Double Paper Magazine System makes possible the replacement of paper
rolls without interrupting printing jobs by automatically supplying paper from a
separate magazine in the event that the paper roll in use should run out. When fitted
with an optional paper deck, the system enables the loading of four paper rolls,
supporting extended, continuous-printing jobs and enabling high productivity.
Double Ink Tank System
The DreamLabo 5000’s Double Ink Tank System temporarily stocks ink from the main
tanks in buffer tanks, supporting continuous printing – and high productivity - by
allowing users to replace ink tanks during printing, without interrupting the process.
Easy Maintenance Design
The DreamLabo 5000’s Easy Maintenance Design enables users to perform periodic
maintenance procedures 2 , such as the replacement of expendable parts. Accordingly,
the system minimises printing down-time, therefore reducing the need to wait for
servicing.
1 This product is intended for print-use only. For photo album and POD production, a book binding process
requiring other equipment would be necessary.
2 Requires Canon service training and certification (separate fee).
