Marvel’s The Avengers
Words by Sophie Leahy
Catering to the needs and desires of comic book and superhero fans, Marvel’s The Avengers (2012)
brings together all of the heroes from the Marvel Universe in the ultimate action epic picture.
Pulsating with excitement, suspense and wit, Marvel’s
The Avengers manages to separate itself from the
excess of superhero films that moviegoers have been
deluged with over the past decade – while being one
and a part of that same plethoric downpour.
A direct sequel that follows the events of the previous
Marvel Universe movies (Iron Man, Thor and Captain
America), the film begins when Thor’s brother Loki
brings their feud to Earth, stealing the Tesseract –
an alien source of pure energy – and threatening to
enslave the human race with the help of his
extra-terrestrial army. The warring siblings have also
dangerously left open a mystical door that puts the
entire mortal world in danger. Seeing no other option,
the leader of the covert government outfit known as
S.H.I.E.L.D., assembles the team of superheroes
known as The Avengers to stop Loki’s plans. This
hero team consists of all of the best-known Marvel
characters, including Iron Man, Hulk, Hawkeye and
Black Widow.
The film has a star-studded cast including the likes
of Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris
Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. Director Joss Whedon
(best known for his work on TV show Buffy) has
ensured the characters are well-crafted, the dialogue
snappy and funny, and that the entire film is nail-biting
and entertaining.
Ultimately, this is more than just a film – Marvel’s The
Avengers is an adventure package. Everyone will
recognise at least one of the heroes we are barracking
for, if not all of them. Catch the action, on board now.
Australian audiences the perfect crash course on his music and career
history so far.
In his rich, twangy opening to ‘Somebody Like You’,
Keith Urban declares “There’s a new wind blowing like
I’ve never known / I’m breathing deeper than I’ve ever
done / And it sure feels good to finally feel the way I
do…” He could very well be singing about his newfound
fame in his homeland, Australia, thanks to the success
of television programme The Voice. Singing along
with the contestants from his revolving red chair and
divvying genuinely helpful advice, Keith’s role as judge
and mentor on the show has helped him win over the
hearts of Australian viewers.
Capitalising on his long-overdue popularity in Australia,
he has released a new best-of collection aptly titled
The Story So Far. This album is a shining reflection
of Keith’s career as one of America’s biggest country
music stars. Since the release of his debut, self-titled
album in 1991, Keith has achieved 15.5 million in global
record sales, made several platinum-selling albums,
undertaken multiple world tours and won a slew of
Grammy and various Country Music Awards to tuck
under his stressed leather belt.
Since heading to Nashville, Tennessee in 1992, Keith
has been breaking hearts and lifting spirits with his
powerhouse vocals. He poured emotion into all of his
tracks, happily wearing his heart on his sleeve and
on the country-inflected break in his voice. While he
quickly found his feet in America, it has taken quite
some time for Keith’s homeland to really become
accustomed to his sound and embrace his talents.
Having finally raised his local profile, Urban’s success
shows no sign of slowing. The last three singles from
his new album have all gone to number one on the
Billboard charts and audiences are desperately keen
to see him back in the judging chair. Keith Urban has
finally found his voice in his homeland.
