We find at year-end, we are humbled, yet inspired, by the spirit of Americans and
camp professionals. Throughout the year, we have witnessed many challenges
but have received many blessings. Again, an increasing number of people went
to camp. People of all ages, all ethnic backgrounds, from multiple cultures, all colors,
shapes, and sizes experienced the poetry and joy of the camp experience.
We also saw new camps emerge across the country and an increasing interest
from corporate America in the value of the camp experience demonstrated by
their investment in camp expansion. The diversity in camps continued to grow
evidencing a developmental model that supports life-long learning: day camps,
resident camps, family camps, specialty camps, trip, travel, adventure, and senior
camps. All of this growth has enthused and challenged leaders at the American
Camping Association (AC A ) .
We have accelerated our pace, pursued new and expanded services, aggressively
pursued financial support from foundations and, most importantly, been
inspired by the camp profession and the growing ACA membership.
Over the last year, ACA has made some great strides, receiving a grant from the
Lilly Endowment to advance the research on the camp experience, as well as
f i n e-tuning our governance procedures. Much of this would not have happened,
if we did not have a very strong financial base, which all started back in 1979
with a group of dedicated camp professionals. At that time, they were known as
the Tr u s t e e s. Then in 1989, the Trustees recommended the formation of the
American Camping Foundation (ACF), which was incorporated in the State of
Indiana in 1990. Since that time, many individuals have stepped forward to contribute
to the annual giving campaign, I Believe, as well as the endowment campaign.
The Foundation has taken its charge very seriously in providing funds for
the financial security of the Association. The endowment has now grown to over
$2.1 million dollars. We have grown and learned a great deal.
N o w, we approach a new year — all having been changed by the events of 9-11.
We will increase our due diligence to continue to provide safe, fun, and educational
experiences to all of our campers. ACA leaders will continue to serve those
camp professionals who serve others. The camp professional recognizes that
although the world has changed, children will always be children and the inherent
beauty of their spirits should be protected and nurtured. What a better place
to do this than surrounded by caring adults in a safe ACA camp community.
Camp Builds Community
YMCA of the Rockies
On August14, 2001, President Bush during his Heartland Tour visited the
YMCA of the Rockies Estes Park Center. He attended a picnic lunch with
day camp children, their families, YMCA volunteers and staff. The
President endorsed the camp’s core values of respect, responsibility, caring,
and honesty. He described the camp as a “community of character.”
The YMCA of the Rockies was formed after a 1908 meeting by the
Western Conference of the YMCA. The center provides activities to bring
families together and build character. Its mission also includes helping
people become inspired or motivated to continue their own mission in life.
Interlocken’s International Summer Camp
Since 1961, fifty states and over sixty different countries have been represented at
Interlocken’s International Summer Camp. They represent the first United Nations
affiliated international summer camp. Last year, a community of 180 boys and girls,
along with 60 staff members from around the world engaged in experiential learning
— “learning by doing.” All summer, campers take an active role in choosing,
shaping, and carrying out their own program activity schedule (Directed Free
Choice). Interlocken’s Direct Free Choice Programming System allows each
camper with assistance from a counselor to choose a variety of classes, including
a combination of fun short-term activities as well as long-term projects. As
campers develop specific skills and interests, they are invited to apprentice with a
counselor and occasionally teach their own class. Interlocken expects each
camper to make important contributions to the camp community, through learning
personal responsibility, respecting individual differences, and taking risks by
exploring new things. Everyone is expected to give as well as receive at
Interlocken’s international summer camp.
September 11th Tragedy
Camp Community Spirit Preserves
On September 11th, Jameson Camp located in Indianapolis, Indiana, opened its
doors as a shelter to 145 passengers stranded at the Indianapolis International
Airport. The passengers were traveling from Montreal, Canada, to Mexico City, when
their plane was diverted to Indianapolis. The Jameson’s Camp staff, board members,
and volunteers worked closely with the American Red Cross to organize the logistics
of housing the travelers. Jameson Camp also coordinated the donation efforts
made by community businesses, foundations, school corporations, and nonprofit
agencies. Many in the surrounding community gave food, clothing, and bedding,
and several local schools provided foreign language teachers to assist with communication
needs. Fi n a l l y, on September 14th, the Jameson Camp visitors departed
Indianapolis with a renewed sense of community, commitment, and friendship.

One program
Camp is for the Camper Launches
OnLine Education for ACA in 2001
Spring 2001 was the launching pad for the first ever
online course offered through ACA, Camp is for the
Camper. Developed in conjunction with the Camp is
for the Camper text, the online program is a practical
tool that allows camps to begin precamp training
well before staff ever arrives at camp. According to
one director, “The course helps counselors prepare
themselves for camp before they get to camp.”
Utilizing a variety of different methods, including message
boards, Web searches, puzzles, and quizzes, the
course is divided into eight sessions pertaining to
camper development and behavior management. It is
designed for staff to work with one another through
assigned groups and as an entire staff to enhance
camp community development. Sixty-two camps and
1,574 staff participated in the course. Directors and
camps can view a demonstration of the course at
w w w. AC A c a m p s . o r g / e d u c a t i o n.
Future plans for additional online courses include the
Visitor Update Course for Accreditation, Basic Camp
Director Course, and a Food Service Core Area
Seminar. For more information about ACA online
courses, please contact the national office.
Camp Community Day
The week of July 16, 2001, marked the third annual
celebration of Camp Community Day – a day in which
camps across the country were encouraged to raise
the public’s awareness of the value of the camp experience.
During this commemorative week, camps set
aside a day to celebrate the power of the camp comm
u n i t y. Using tools provided by ACA, including the
Congressional To o l k i t; press kit, Under Construction:
Kid Communities; and The ACA Power Pa c k e t, camp
directors invited congressional representatives to visit
their camps and used motivational programming
ideas to enhance the spirit of the camp community.
ACA Launches World-Class
Research Project
On September 20, 2001, ACA’s years of efforts were
rewarded with full funding for their first-of-a-kind
national study assessing the youth development outcomes
of the camp experience. The project, which
involves the assembly of a renowned research team
of academics, research and camp professionals, is
made possible through a $640,000 grant awarded by
Indianapolis, Indiana-based Lilly Endowment Inc.
The study will be evaluating the accomplishment of
outcomes in four areas that were identified in preliminary
research over the past two years. ACA will
analyze the strength of the relationship between the
provision of inputs by the camp and the manifestation
of specific outcomes in campers, including
increased positive identity, increased positive values
and spiritual growth, enhanced social skills, and
learned new skills (cognitive and psycho-motor).
At a time when people are seeking the most effective
means of educating and assisting youth to take a productive
place in the future society, understanding the
role of camps is critical. ACA has anecdotal information
on the value of camp. However, this study provides
an opportunity to lay an important foundation to
future research in the camp industry.
Project Heal the Children
After September 11th, ACA’s New York Section searched for a way that
it could participate in this great time of challenge. Section leaders,
camps, businesses, and staff persons collaborated to create Project Heal
the Children.
ACA-accredited camps from across the country are designating spaces in
day and resident summer camps, free of charge, for children who lost parents
in the September 11th tragedy. Each participating camp is designating
spaces for as many years as the child wishes to attend summer camp.
Currently, over 160 summer camps are offering 600 camp scholarships as
part of Project Heal the Children. The annual monetary value of the camp
scholarships totals over $2 million dollars.
Wisconsin Section Supports Students
The ACA Wisconsin Section believes that students represent the future of the
camp profession. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College of
Natural Resources recently formed a student group promoting the benefits of
camp and membership with ACA. Student organized and managed, WI-
Camps UWSP was chartered by Sam Steiger, Jen Little, and Sarah
Christopherson (all current students, camp professionals, and members of
ACA). Their affiliation with the Wisconsin Section represents an active partnership
in promoting the camp experience and profession.
Currently the student group, which is open to persons interested in the camp
experience, has over thirty members and continues to grow. Students meet
to discuss camp and outdoor educational issues, exchange program ideas,
explore camp as a professional career, and visit various camp facilities.
After the formation of the student group, the University of Wisconsin reinstated
Camp Management as a major course of study in the College of
Natural Resources. Classes started in the fall of 2001.
The Camp Doctor
We are grateful to each member who believes in the purposes of organized
camping and who wants to ensure that camp continues as a growing, educational
opportunity for those who follow. The Acorn Society is a program to
recognize those who include the American Camping Association and/or the American
Camping Foundation in their estate planning or make outright gifts to the Endowment
Fund. To qualify for the Acorn Society by way of cash contributions requires a minimum
contribution of $10,000 payable over a period of not more than five years.
The Acorn Society Dinner is sponsored by a generous bequest in memory of Jesse
Farrow and by anonymous donors inspired by Jesse’s leadership. These donors continue
to kindle an enthusiasm among camping’s most committed leaders and supporters
to make gifts in perpetuity for the future of camping and the American
Camping Association.
The American Camping Association and American Camping Foundation completed
another financially successful year in 2001. ACA and ACF remain committed
to developing the financial stability and resources needed to maintain
and expand services into the future. Total assets rose slightly to over $6 million.
The total of cash and investments remained relatively stable as additional investments
by the Association offset significant market losses recorded on the
Foundation’s investments. Additional computer investments were made to
begin the process of providing Web accessibility to ACA’s main database.
Liabilities showed cyclical variances and a moderate overall increase.
Permanently restricted net assets rose by $59,000 in endowment contributions.
Temporarily restricted net assets decreased by $33,000, almost entirely due to
market losses on scholarship funds within the Foundation. Unrestricted net
assets that represent the accumulation of operational net revenues rose by
$114,000. The Foundation experienced market losses which contributed to its
$170,000 loss, while ACA cleared $284,000, much of which has already been
earmarked for future projects.
Total revenues, net of section distributions, rose to $4.6 million, with less than
35% coming from dues and camp fees. The first year of the new membership
system ended successfully with an increase in net members, and a $130,000
increase in dues and camp fees revenues, net of sections. ACA had a $175,000
increase in revenues from conferences and education, which was largely
attributable to the fabulously successful annual conference in Orlando.
Nearly 75% of all expenses go to provide program services, including
• Membership and field services; (content management)
• Legislative and public relations; (issue and image management)
• The ACA bookstore, Guide to ACA-Accredited Camps and Camping Magazine;
(knowledge resources)
• And the annual conference and other educational events. (professional development
and networking)
Management and General expenses were reduced, which is important as ACA
continues to look for other funding. Funds development costs are stable, but will
probably increase as the new Executive Officer of Advancement develops that
department.
