Manager’s Report
May is tournament month at Moraga Country Club. The
Ladies Invitational just took place with a wonderful day and
field of ladies. The Men’s Challenge will start May 31st and
end June 2nd. The new clubhouse continues to be enjoyed by
a large number of our members. Our new lunch, dinner, and
lounge menus have received rave reviews. The pool complex
remains very active as swim team season kicks off with time
trials on June 3rd. Our junior programs for swim, tennis, and
golf have record numbers of participants. We are very excited
that we will be celebrating Fourth of July in our new facility with
the always popular Fourth of July Couples Golf Tournament.
Later in the afternoon we will host a poolside barbecue with
games, entertainment, and a fabulous fireworks show that is
conducted on our own driving range. We will also have a
buffet set up in the main dining room for members who
wish to be away from all of the action at the pool, but want
to be afforded a great view of the holiday fireworks. Please
make reservations early, for all of the events will sell out fast.
Our annual Moraga Open tennis tournament is around the
corner, starting August 7th. The best college players and top
tennis players throughout California as well as other states
participate each year. Please come and enjoy your Moraga
Country Club.
President’s Message
Everyone can see by simple observation that activity at the
Club is on the upswing and the vibe is very positive. While
there is still work to be done, The Board is very pleased with
where we are right now.
And just where are we? In answer to that question I thought I
would take a moment this month to run through some club
statistics, statistics which, I think, tell a very positive story.
• The selling price of Golf Memberships at MCC has tripled
in the last 2.5 years
• We have had as many as 30 golf memberships for sale in
the past with the old facilities; currently we have no golf
memberships for sale and a waiting list of 3 candidates
wanting golf memberships
• We have a waiting list of eight candidates for our tennis
and swim membership
• There are 16 clubs in an association called the “North and
East Bay Association of Golf and Country Clubs” aka NEB.
Just three of the 16 clubs presently have waiting lists. MCC
is one of those three
• Many of the 16 clubs have large numbers of memberships
for sale (in a few cases hundreds) and several have had
membership surrenders in the last 3 years; MCC has had
no memberships surrenders
• Six years ago 13 of the 16 clubs had a higher golf initiation
fee than MCC. Today only 5 clubs have a higher fee (yet
MCC dues are the lowest of the 16 clubs!)
• Our youth programs are a model for many clubs with 350
swim kids, 240 tennis and 130 junior golf
This is just a sampling but a telling one I believe.
I attended a recent meeting of the NEB. Most of the reporting
clubs were talking about membership retention programs.
Scary and sad. Very gratifying to be with a club that is on a
definite upswing as the above statistics indicate.
Enjoy the Club!
AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE
Good weather and MCC go so well together. Nice temperatures
along with a lot of sun is what I call a ‘good club day’. It is terrific
to see such an active membership. A championship golf
course, 12 active tennis courts and a nine lane pool come alive
when the weather turns. As a result the clubhouse also sees an
increase in usage.
As a reminder swimwear works well poolside but is not
appropriate attire for the restaurant. For safety, shoes are to be
worn while in the clubhouse. And to avoid uncomfortable
situations please remember that in the locker rooms children
under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
You may have seen some new faces because we are in the
process of adding to our team. Hiring and training are underway
as we prepare to open the patios adjacent to the bar and dining
room. The new patio furniture should be in place by the time
that you receive this magazine.
We are happy to see such nice comments about the food
and service. We have been running the newest version of the
lounge and dinner menus. Chef Kevin has brought creativity
and terrific flavor profiles to these menu items. And with the
newest version of the dinner menu there are only three items
over $20.00. So when you join terrific items at reasonable
prices you end up with great value.
Enjoy the start of summer and we will see you around the
clubhouse!
Rick Cabasal, Clubhouse Manager
Employee of the Month: Efrain Carillo
Efrain Carillo
Golf Course Crew
Efrain has worked for Moraga Country Club since 1997 as a member
of the golf course crew. Efrain’s work day starts at 6:00 a.m. when he
joins his co-workers to begin grooming the course mowing greens
and tees, raking sand traps, aerating greens and pruning trees to get
the course ready for our early morning golfers. He is also skilled at
maintaining the equipment needed to keep our course looking good.
Out on the course or behind the scenes, Efrain is a very important
member of our crew. Co-workers speak very highly of him.
Efrain comes from San Juan, Mexico where his parents still live. He
and his family return to his hometown for vacation as often as they can.
Speaking of family, Efrain is married to Maria de Los Angeles and
they have six children ~ 5 boys and one girl.Aged 13, 11, 9, 7, 5 and
almost 3.
When Efrain isn’t here at MCC working, he enjoys playing football
and soccer with his kids at a park near their home in Manteca.
If you spot Efrain around the Club, please join management in
congratulating him on a job well done!
Last Chance
Water Myth: Fact or Fiction?
Here are some statements you may hear from family, friends or co-workers. See if you can
tell who is passing on an ‘old wives’ tale’.
Myth: Watering daily is the only way to maintain a healthy, green lawn. Fact: During the
summer, your lawn needs about an inch of water per week. Overwatering is bad for landscapes
and can cause wasteful (and often harmful) runoff. The runoff from overwatering can carry
chemicals and fertilizer into retention areas where children and families typically play.
Overwatering can also kill your plants or result in weak root structure.
Pruning and Detail Schedule – June 2012
The pruning and detailing of shrubs and groundcover are routinely done based on a schedule
provided below. The crews also apply post emergent to control weed growth and growth
regulators to reduce excessive growth.
Summer is finally here! Summer Swim Team Practices start on June 11th; please visit our website www.mccwaves.com for
practice times and for more detailed information. Our team is considerably larger this year, coaches will do their best to find
room for lap swimmers during the morning practice times. The pool is open from 5:30-10:00 p.m. daily, Monday-Friday morning
practices for the team start at 7:30 a.m., a Free Swim Area and Lap Lanes will open up at 1:00 p.m.
The swim team just purchased 80 new kickboards, members and guests are welcome to use them for lap swimming.
Please do not use the kickboards as toys or floatation devices. The only items that kids should be taking from the equipment
area are noodles. We will be replenishing the noodle supply for the beginning of the summer.
Lesson sign up will be available on a table near the Aquatics Directors office and there will be three binders available; the
Learn to Swim Binder, Competitive Binder and Lessons with Coach Sean. Learn to Swim is for kids who are in the MicroWave
program or who are not participating on swim team, but want to either become water safe or work on their strokes. Competitive
lessons are for swim kids who are interested in perfecting their strokes and improving their racing technique. For both of
these lessons, swim instructors and times are assigned by Coach Dave and this information will be posted on-line and an
email will be sent to you by Sunday of the week of your lessons. The third binder, Lessons with Coach Sean are for swim team
kids who want a one on one, 30 minute private lesson with Coach Sean. You may sign up, in pencil please, for any available
time slot for one lesson per week per child. The new week is put in the binder on the Monday before and swimmier can sign
up for a second lesson in the same week if there are any open time slots in the current week.
Thanks to everyone who has participated in the Masters Program. Masters Swimming is going to be taking a break for the
busy summer months, but there will be a file folder filled with the laminated workouts available. Swimmers are welcome to
grab a workout to workout on their own or with a friend. If there is enough interest we have talked about doing an evening
Masters Practice around 7:00 p.m. a few times a week.
We want everyone to be safe and have a great time when they come to the pool. Lifeguards will be enforcing safety rules
in a firm but polite manner, but reminders from parents will also help to maintain a safe environment. In consideration of
other members please leave the pool and the area you sit the same way it was when you arrived. We are all looking forward
to a fun active summer.
Turf Talk
Aerification!!!
This month the golf course maintenance staff will spend a significant amount of time
aerifying the golf course.
In the month of June, the maintenance staff will start the aerification of rough and fairways.
We utilize a solid, star-shape disc, making this procedure different from our normal hollow,
plug pilling, aeration in the spring and fall. The slicing is the process by which perforations
are made to improve water infiltration and air exchange in the soil, uniformly playing conditions
and enhanced healthy root system.
Luis Ballesteros
Golf Course
Superintendent
Repairing ball marks: The basis for ball mark repair and divot replacement is for competitive
and agronomic reasons. Balls that land in un-repaired divots place a golfer at a disadvantage,
just as having to putt over a ball mark. By leaving turf damaged (un-repaired), it becomes
susceptible to disease and/or infestation of weeds, resulting in a lower quality of playing surface.
This necessitates the need for attention by golf course superintendents and their staffs,
thereby taking them away from more pressing duties. As a general rule, a ball mark repaired
within 10 minutes will heal with a smooth surface within two to three days. An un-repaired
ball mark may take as long as three weeks to heal, but the result will be an uneven surface.
Beginner or pro, it is your responsibility as a golfer to fix your own marks. If you're truly
a steward of the game, you'll fix any others you see while your partners are putting. There's
really not much to it, but there are a few guidelines you should follow when making these repairs.
Luis Ballesteros, Golf Course Superintendent
Community Patrol
Neighborhood Watch
Stuart O. Mahler
Public Safety Director
Have you heard of Neighborhood Watch? Though we do not practice the program here,
still it has a lot of great qualities we could implement amongst our neighbors.
The program is predicated on forming groups with a block captain. Neighbors meet to
discuss concerns and possible solutions along with your local police department. It strives
for neighbor’s looking after neighbors, sharing contact information and to always be checking
on the neighborhood. This is a program utilized throughout Contra Costa County.
Though we have found that not much interest exists here in MCC, we could still utilize
some of the components to improve our great situation within our community.
If more of our members would consider “neighbor watching neighbor” concept I am
confident we would see an improvement. How do we do this? Be alert in your neighborhood
and in your comings and goings. If something or someone does not look right or suspicious;
call Security or Moraga Police Department. Both would like to respond to your observation
and investigate. Granted, it may turn out to be something that was routine. However, if you
were to rationalize an observation and did not call, this could be the time criminal activity is
occurring.
If you are interested in hearing more about Neighborhood Watch feel free to contact
Lt. Price at Moraga Police Department. He is available to meet with you and your neighbors.
MCC Security and Moraga Police want your calls. Together we will collectively make a
difference.
happy june!
On March 30, a luncheon was put together by Jennifer Oyoung for Lee Griffith to celebrate her 85th birthday.
It was a gathering to thank Lee for her contribution to the Ladies Program and to share in her special day. A
special plaque was presented to Lee by Jody Johnson and Jackie Lopresti which was placed on the bench on
court 3.
4th of july team tennis event
It’s time to start thinking ahead about our favorite get-together of the year – a 4th of July celebration. Get
your best shots ready for fun and an exciting day of great tennis and good friends. Play will start at 10:30 a.m.
and go to 12:30 p.m. with lunch to follow. Cost will be $20.00 per player. Wear something red, white or blue
and let’s celebrate this brilliant day with some excitement.
By the time you receive this newsletter, we will have completed the resurfacing on four of our tennis
courts. Hopefully we had no problems with tennis play during this period. Thank you for your patience.
junior news
We are off and running in great anticipation for a busy and fun summer with our juniors. With plans and
staff in place our program kicks off on Monday, June 11.
We have two Junior kick-off parties planned for the first week of our tennis program. This is just a reminder,
if you have a child in the Performance Team, your kick-off party is planned for Thursday, June 14th, and if
you have children in the Development Team, your kick-off party is scheduled for Monday, June 18th both
starting at 5:30 p.m. and ending around 8:00 p.m. When you signed your child up for the summer program,
you indicated on your sheet if you would be attending these events, if you indicated you could not attend
but your plans have changed and you can attend either BBQ, give us a call and we will assign you an item
in the tennis lounge in June so please stop by and hopefully we will be able to put together an outfit for
your child.
Golf News
From the Golf Shop
Where do I begin this month? We’ve had a few events so far we need to recap. The Master’s was
contested late in April and Edwin Lee claimed his second green jacket in a row. Edwin shot an
impressive 71 to add one more green jacket to his closet. The Moraga Cup/Senior Club Championship
was played on the second weekend in May and the turnout was great. We had a total of 66 players
with bright, sunny, and hot weather. The Stroke Play Champion for 2012 was Edwin Lee. Edwin
shot a two-day total of 145 gross, with a first round score of 69. The Senior Club Champion for 2012
was Jim Manzi. Jim Manzi and Bob McLaughlin had a one-hole sudden death playoff to determine
the winner. Jim and Bob shot a two day total of 152 gross.
With the Men’s Invitational the first weekend of June (your probably reading this as it’s going on)
the golf course will be closed for all play as well as the driving range during the Invitational. The
dates are May 31st, June 1st and 2nd.
ace
The ACE (Attention of Course Etiquette) program is in full swing. We’ve had a lot of response
and the majority of members are excited about contributing. You may see fliers floating around
asking for your help. If you have any interest, don’t hesitate to contact the Golf Shop. Be on the
lookout for some videos explaining etiquette and how to take care of course issues. Since we’re
on the topic of course care I would also like to mention to everyone which holes we can drive on.
All too often I see people driving on #16 fairway, #12 fairway and #3 fairway. Believe it or not golf
cars on the fairways is just as damaging to the turf as playing golf. Please adhere to the cart path
restrictions when playing.
mga news
The Men’s Invitational (The Challenge) is the main focal point for the month of June.
There are no other MGA events for the month of June.
You can find the 2012 MGA Tournament Schedule on the MCC website –
rules of the month
Joe hits a ball toward the lateral water hazard. He’s unsure if he will find it or that it is in the hazard
and declares a provisional ball. Joe then hits his provisional in the hole. As Joe walks to the hazard
he notices his original ball is sitting just inside the lateral stakes (in the hazard). Joe decides to play
the ball he holed out. Can Joe do this?
No, Joe must play his original ball that he found in the hazard.
golf fact
Although Bobby Jones was one of the greatest golfers of all time (he won the U.S. Open 4 times), he
never won any money in golf. Despite being a world-class player and competing against all the best
pro golfers of his time, Jones remained an amateur throughout his career and never accepted
money for winning a golf tournament.
SMGA
Warning: This article has probably been altered from its original form. Those in the know, have better sense than does the
writer. The Senior Eclectic, which is a two day event, was scheduled to be held on April 19th and 26th. Due to predictions
of heavy mist on day one, there was an outpouring of negative emotions so strong that the committee was left with no
choice but to cancel the first day. The whimpering, whining, wusses wiggled their way out of a chance to get damp with
such lame excuses as “my arthritis acts up in the damp weather”, “my contacts get foggy in high humidity”, “I won’t get
any roll on my topped shots” and the like. So, on the 2nd day the format then became a two-man(sort of) best ball.
8th place net 63 “Slick Willie” and “The Fuse” (sounds like a hip-hop group)
7th place net 62 “Bobbie Z” and “Sky Pilot” Everist
6th place net 62 “The Limo Liberal” and Gary Irwin (no nicknames, please)
5th place net 62 “The New Kid” Anderson and “The Veteran” Coburn
4th place net 61 “Jawbrey” Copeland and “Old Oski” Ellis
3rd place net 61 “Coach Campy” and “The Italian from Denmark” Larzoni
2nd place net 60 “The ‘Lil Trojan Jordan and Frank “The Coon”
1st place net 60 “Mr. Effusive Bryan Cram” and “Mr. President” (past) Martel
Mr. President confided to anyone who would listen that Bryan gets so wound up in competition that he had to use
“The subtle genius of lowered expectations” to prevent Bryan from going completely apoplectic. Congratulations!
On April 26th and May 3rd, the Senior’s Match play events took place. The Oak Flight was dominated by Frank “The
Coon” while the Cypress Flight was a barn burner between “Shoeman” Brown and Jawbrey Copeland who finished in a
tie for first. The Pine Flight was “Six Minute” Fred Boettler’s from the get go while Tom McCauley toyed with the field in
the Redwood Flight. Others winning money for their finishing places in each flight were as follows:
Oak Flight 2nd “Slick Willie”, 3rd Frank Jordan, 4th “Hilarious Herb”
Cypress Flight 3rd “The New Kid” Anderson, 4th “William The Lion Hearted”
Pine Flight 2nd “Ireland’s Gift to Moraga” Colin Dobbyn, 3rd Montera Junior High’s “Jock of the Decade”
Jerry Chamberlin, 4th Bob “Colonel Clink” Recker
Redwood Flight 2nd “Chatterbox” Sullivan, 3rd “Just Call Me” L.T., 4th “Squash Man” Hoppock
I am told that the highlight of the matches was cat fight over a called rules violation that was not in the spirit of our laid
back Senior ways. It was considered “Hen House” in no uncertain terms and it certainly ruffled some feathers. Say no
more. Say no more. On May 7th, ten intrepid Seniors ventured away a day ahead of our event at Fountaingrove to play at
Foxtail North. Some friendly wagers were made and Kentucky Derby long shot “Done Talking” aka Yeaks was the big
winner. The snorers all had the separate rooms so everyone was well rested for the 2nd day. 22 Moragans as well as players
from Santa Rosa CC joined our hosts from Fountaingrove for a grand day. Golf ball winners were as follows:
First Place Team Members from Moraga Dennis Martel
2nd Place Rich Larzoni and “G.Q.” Gerald (quite the dapper dresser)
3rd Place Gary Irwin
Charles Murrin won the closest to the hole for the Moragans. Rather than a golf ball or two he won a bottle of “two buck
chuck”- how appropriate. There was an unscheduled event added in April. Orinda CC could not fulfill their commitment
at Contra Costa on Wednesday, April 18th so 20 opportunistic Seniors jumped at the chance to play there. It was a little
breezy but sunny and a normal great day to be retired and play golf. 3rd place finishers from different flights were Dennis
Tierney, Gary Irwin, and Charles Murrin. 2nd place included Awesome and Norm “I always eat two deserts” Schlansky.
1st place winners were Denis Iwata, “Belltone” Brown, Magnifico Splendorio, and “Bugeye” Bagai. Do not forget to sign
up for our here event with La Riconada as well as our away events at Rossmoor and Richmond to be held later this month.
Always a spirited event, this year’s exchange under the direction of Sue
Hanes with help from Keiko Tanaka and Janet Grant was one of the best.
Playing a scramble format, teams made up of members from both groups
played eighteen holes followed with lunch served in the clubhouse dining
