our work
Partnership for Children promotes the
emotional wellbeing of children and
young people throughout the world.
Our main activity is Zippy’s Friends, a
school-based programme that helps six
and seven year old children to develop
coping skills. The programme is unusual
because it helps children from different
countries and cultures – from Surrey to
São Paulo, Iceland to India. In 2006,
the number of children enrolled grew
by 56 per cent.
Zippy’s Friends is based on extensive
research, and helps children learn how
to identify and talk about their feelings,
how to make friends, how to resolve
conflicts and how to cope with change
and loss. The programme has been
professionally evaluated, and has been
featured in two publications by the
World Health Organisation.
We also run a website which provides
information and resources for parents
and teachers of young children
and are working with Booktrust
to produce a list of recommended
storybooks.
Brazil is now our largest country
programme. In 2006, the number of
children enrolled in Amigos do Zippy
shot up to 15,776, a tenfold increase
over the previous year. The programme
spread outside São Paulo and was run in
a wide range of communities, including
some favela or slum schools. Sorocaba
became the first city in the world to
run Zippy’s Friends in all of its primary
schools.
In Canada, we are working in the
province of Quebec, and the number of
children enrolled in Les Amis de Zippy
rose by more than 300 per cent.
For the first time, classes were also
run with English-speaking children
in a Native Canadian area north of
Montreal.
We reached agreement with Youth
Consultation Service (YCS) of New
Jersey to run a first US pilot of Zippy’s
Friends in 2007. This was made possible
by the enthusiasm and generosity of
The Todd Ouida Children’s Foundation,
which commemorates and celebrates
the life of Todd Ouida, who died in the
attack on the World Trade Center in
In China, there was again very strong
growth in Hong Kong, with the number
of children enrolled rising by 73 per
cent. A Chinese-language website was
set up to promote the programme and
to strengthen communication between
teachers. The Hong Kong Institute
of Education, which manages Zippy’s
Friends, also teamed up with the East
China Normal University to launch the
programme in Shanghai. In both
places, HSBC provided very generous
sponsorship. About 1,000 children were
enrolled for the first year in Shanghai,
and in a city of more than 20 million
people there is enormous scope for
expansion.
In India, we work in Goa with Sangath
Society for Child Development and
Family Guidance, which first ran Zippy’s
Friends in English-speaking schools and
then moved into schools teaching in
Konkani. The Indian education system
has a strong focus on academic results,
and it is not easy to persuade schools
of the need to promote children’s
mental and emotional health. Sangath
has been looking at alternative settings
for Zippy’s Friends, and in 2006 began
classes in community pre-schools, or
anganwadis.
A first national conference
was organised in Poland
for trainers and teachers
of Przyjaciele Zippiego.
The programme grew
strongly throughout the
year, with 7,851 children
enrolled.
In Norway, Zippy’s venner was
approved for use in schools across the
country, and included in the National
Action Plan for mental health in
schools.
Lithuania recorded another year of
solid development, with the programme
expanding to all ten counties. The
number of children enrolled rose yet
again to 8,525. The British Embassy
in Vilnius and the British Chamber of
Commerce in Lithuania both gave
generous support, and the IKI chain of
supermarkets agreed to sponsor Zipio
draugai for three years from 2007.
europe
In England, we began an interesting
collaboration with Sunfield School,
which is adapting Zippy’s Friends for
children with severe and complex
learning difficulties. A first national
workshop was organised for Zippy’s
Friends coordinators, and Howell’s
School, Llandaff, became the first school
to run the programme in Wales.
There was no significant growth during
the year in Denmark, due to the
retirement of the original co-ordinator,
but prospects for 2007 are brighter.
Iceland has the smallest population
of all Zippy’s Friends countries, but the
programme developed steadily in 2006
and five times more children took part.
our finances
our future
2006 was a difficult year financially.
Income dipped to £110,088, following
the unexpected failure of a sponsor.
Costs were cut to £168,879, but that
still left a shortfall of £58,790, which
was covered by funds carried forward
and the Special Reserve.
The financial situation was closely and
regularly monitored, and an external
consultant worked with the Board of
Trustees and staff to consider how to
strengthen the charity’s finances for
the long-term.
Steps are being taken to ensure that
we receive more income from the
global expansion of Zippy’s Friends,
and an appeal was launched to raise
£100,000 to help 100,000 children over
two years.
One significant development during the
year was the conclusion of our grants to
partner agencies in India and Lithuania.
Every Zippy’s Friends programme is
now locally funded.
Plans
In 2007 we aim to:
• Launch Zippy’s Friends in two more
countries
• Support the programme’s expansion
in existing countries
• Update and reprint the Zippy’s Friends
teaching materials
• Re-design and re-launch our website
• Publish a booklet of recommended
storybooks for young children
• Strengthen our financial position
• Recruit new Trustees
Appeal
Partnership for Children is exactly that
– a partnership.
Our plans require the support of
many partners – teachers, parents,
academics, the agencies that run
Zippy’s Friends around the world, other
charities, international networks, and
our sponsors and supporters.
Please consider how you can support
our work and help us to promote the
emotional wellbeing of children around
the world.
