<strong>Methodist</strong> College is Now <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />
The following new members were elected to serve on the <strong>Methodist</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> Board of Trustees in 2006: David R. Nimocks, III, President<br />
of Ensystex, Inc. and Vice-Chair of Terminix Termite & Pest Control;<br />
and the Reverend Carol W. Goehring,<br />

Meet the Board...<br />
Dr. Greg Combs, assistant professor of sport management, was elected chair<br />
of the <strong>Fayetteville</strong> Area Sports Commission. Dr. Combs launched a sport video<br />
analysis company called “Hall of Fame Productions” to provide more<br />
opportunities for MU sport management students. He presented at the<br />
International Conference of Sport Business and Entertainment and was<br />
featured in the October 2006 edition of Sports Illustrated.<br />
The Department of Modern Languages and Literature announced two new<br />
overseas study programs, one in Sevilla, Spain from May 12-June 11, 2007<br />
and the second in Rimini, Italy from May 26-June 23, 2007.<br />
Mary Deyampert-McCall, professor of social work, led a community task<br />
force including community leaders, to examine child homicides in<br />
Cumberland County. After a year and a half, they have issued a report with<br />
recommendations for follow-up. She also chairs the County Department of<br />
Social Services Board of Directors.<br />
Dr. Larry Wells, assistant professor of music, won a position in the<br />
<strong>Fayetteville</strong> Symphony Orchestra and completed his doctor of musical arts in<br />
December 2006.<br />
Dr. Drew Ziegler, associate professor of political science, became the new<br />
director of the Community Leadership Training program for Cumberland County.<br />

Dr. Keith Dippre, associate professor of music, was presented with the<br />
Academic Hall of Honor award at his alma mater, Azusa Pacific <strong>University</strong>,<br />
Azusa, Calif., on Oct. 28, 2006. On Nov. 3, his commissioned piece “Attacca<br />
1956” premiered with the <strong>Fayetteville</strong> Symphony Orchestra to commemorate<br />
the 50th anniversary of <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Dr. Juanita Heyward, associate professor of elementary education, graduated<br />
from the Institute for Community Leadership on April 18, 2006. She toured<br />
Hong Kong and Beijing in July. “Yes,” she said, “I climbed the Great Wall!”<br />
Twenty-two international students from <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> met her Majesty,<br />
Queen Noor of Jordan, at the 50th anniversary gala for the <strong>Fayetteville</strong><br />
Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 5, 2006. Queen Noor serves as president of the<br />
United World Colleges (UWC).<br />
Wendy Vonnegut, Esq., associate professor of legal studies, met with Justice<br />
Sandra Day O’Connor at the Convocation of Elon School of Law. She also<br />
received a full tuition scholarship to Vermont Law School to study<br />
environmental litigation. The scholarship was awarded to only three directors<br />
throughout the country. Additionally, she was elected second vice president<br />
for the Southern Association of Pre-Law Advisors, which covers the states of<br />
Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina..<br />
ATHLETICS<br />
Tom Austin, baseball coach, was selected 2006 USA South Athletic<br />
Conference Coach of the Year.<br />
Bob McEvoy, director of Athletics, completed a two-year term as president of<br />
the USA South Athletic Conference. He completed a four-year term as South<br />
Region chair of the National <strong>NC</strong>AA III Men’s Basketball Committee and a<br />
two-year term as an <strong>NC</strong>AA facilitator at Regional Leadership Conferences in<br />
Dallas, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and New York.<br />
The women’s golf team won their ninth-straight national championship at<br />
the 2006 <strong>NC</strong>AA Division III Women’s Golf National Championship in Howey-<br />
In-The-Hills, Fla., at the Mission Inn Resort. Charlotte Williams won the<br />
individual championship for the second consecutive year on the way to the<br />
team’s nineteenth championship.<br />
The baseball, softball, women’s tennis, men’s golf, and women’s soccer<br />
teams won USA South Atlantic Conference Championships. Twenty-five<br />
athletes were named to USA South All-Conference First Teams while 71<br />
student-athletes were named Academic All-Conference.<br />
The women’s soccer team received an at-large bid to the <strong>NC</strong>AA Division-III<br />
Tournament for the first time in eleven years after winning the regular season<br />
conference championship. The Monarchs swept the conference post-season<br />
awards winning Coach, Player, and Rookie of the Year.<br />
