Young Riders 4-H CLUB (Submitted by Ashley Abby)
Our last club meeting took place at St. Johns County Equestrian Center on September 24th at
10:25am. We had 17 members present. Our 4-H members are involved in many projects such as the
horse shows and contests. Some things that we did at our mounted meeting was free ride, discuss
riding safety, and make a patch to hold our earned pins. Community service projects we are doing are
tree planting, park clean up, toy drive, and cracker day fundraiser/cleanup.
We are very proud of the Young Riders members. Members who attended the Jacksonville Horse
Show decorated the stalls and won $50.00. Our club is doing their best to do more activities an community
service to earn more points towards our record books.
Buds and Blossoms 4-H CLUB (Submitted by Cady Smith, Secretary/Reporter)
SEPTEMBER
Our first meeting of the year was held on September 21. Faith Mantia called the meeting to order at
3:40pm. Mariana and Lucia Snair led the pledges. Faith Mantia talked about what the Heart stands
for in 4-H for the Thought of the Day. Everyone stood up and told what they had done during the
summer. Ms. Brown gave a talk on health. We completed a crossword puzzle that had hints like—builds
strong
Teeth and bones—answer? Calcium! We read a piece of paper Ms. Brown had given us on “Which Fruits
and Vegetables should I Eat? “ Ms. Brown talked about what kind of recycled projects you could make
out of certain things. We had refreshments, then Faith adjourned the meeting. We all went outside
to play.
OCTOBER
Our next meeting was held on October 19. When we first arrived, we took our recycled projects to
Ms. Brown’s garage where they would be judged during our meeting. Faith Mantia called the meeting
to order at 3:39pm. Miguel Bermeo led the American pledge and Cayla Smith led the 4-H pledge.
Cayla Smith gave the devotion on grandparents and how much they meant to her. Ms. Brown talked
about how you should keep your dinner plates healthy by using a variety of food and colors. Everyone
stood up and told what they had done since the last meeting. Javier Bermeo gave an interesting
speech on “My Family Heritage”. Faith Mantia told us how she made the refreshments. They were little
spiders made out of Ramen noodles coated with chocolate and purple icing for the eyes. They were
cute! We elected our officers: President: Faith Mantia, Vice President: Javier Bermeo, Secretary/
Reporter: Cady Smith, Treasurer: Cayla Smith, Historian: Jeremy Smith, Sergeant at Arms: Lucia
Snair, Recreation Leader: Miguel Bermeo, Refreshment Leader: Ms. Brown, Junior Leader: Jared
Smith.
Faith Mantia adjourned the meeting at 4:38pm. We collected our recycled projects and prizes, ate
refreshments, played, then we went home. Many thanks to Mrs. Rayma Thomas for also providing refreshments
and judging our projects. Many thanks to Mrs. Gloria Burchfield for providing the prizes
(gold dollars) and judging our projects.

Forest Ecology 4-H PROJECT (Submitted by Jared Smith)
In October, the St. Johns County 4-H Forest Ecology Team attended a 4-H Forest Ecology clinic at
the University of Florida in Gainesville. This clinic was a great learning experience as we were shown
what to expect at the state contest to be held in April. We learned different ways of identifying
plants, trees, and diseases. We got to practice using a compass and we were shown how to use a Biltmore
Stick to measure trees. A fun part of the day was when we participated in a mock Forestry Quiz
Bowl. I am proud to say that the boys beat the girls! A great aspect of the clinic was the knowledge
and tips that were shared by UF professors and students; 4-H leaders; and other 4-H members. The
4-H Forest Ecology clinic was an awesome experience. Even if you are only interested in learning about
Forest Ecology and not competing, you would love this clinic and our club.
Busy Bees 4-H CLUB (Submitted by Olivia Bradley)
Our last club meeting took place on October 8, 2011 at 9:26 a.m. There were 12 members and 9
leaders present. Caroline Gordon led us in the American pledge and Sarah Orefice led us in the 4-H
pledge. Our new fundraiser is selling Chick-fil-a calendars. Our new community service project is
making European washcloths to help with the prison ministries in Cameroon, Africa. We are all working
on our garments for the fashion show!!!
Mechanical Masterminds 4-H CLUB (Submitted by Henry Keating)
The second meeting of the Mechanical Masterminds was on October 26, 2011, at the Agricultural
Center. After reciting pledges, having roll call, hearing and approving the secretary’s minutes, and
listening to the County Council Delegate report, we were ready for recreation. Nathan Yee led us in a
game using our sense of smell called Follow Your Nose; it was harder than it sounds! Next, we had
refreshments, brought by Henry Keating. Finally, our favorite part, we worked on our simplebots! This
month we got to work with sensors. After we attached the Ultrasonic and Touch sensors onto them,
we visited two different stations. At one station, Mrs. Howard talked about the range of the
Ultrasonic sensor, and at the other, Mrs Yee talked about the Ultrasonic sensor. Lastly, we had a
robot challenge: to navigate our simplebot through a maze. Great job, everyone!
Outdoor Buckaroos 4-H CLUB
(Submitted by Secretary Kayla Thompson)
to bring to the fishing trip then we ate dinner we had chicken, cupcakes and salad then we did a
Halloween craft, we made Halloween cards for the veterans and wrote happy Halloween on each one.
After we did the craft we went outside and learned about the plants around the lake. On
Saturday October 22 we had are fishing trip it was so much fun we fished in the lake next to the Ag
Center we were practicing for when we go camping and practicing team work. We are looking forward
to our next event on November 7 at 7:00 the veteran’s dinner at the Ag Center.

Gourmet Gang 4-H CLUB
Submitted by Henry Keating
The first meeting of the Gourmet Gang was October 22, 2011, at the Agricultural Center. After the
pledges, we elected officers as follows: Nathan Yee president, Sarah Gordon Vice President, and
Henry Keating Reporter. Gabby Sapp led us in a game of Ninja for recreation. Next, we reviewed the
kitchen rules aloud. Then we started cooking! We all pitched in and did our assigned duties to make a
delicious meal of Bourbon Chicken with fried rice (it was so good, I made it for my family the next
day!). To top off the meal we made fortune cookies. It was so much fun eating the meal we prepared
together and we all look forward to next time!
Hearts for Horses 4-H CLUB
Submitted by Hannah Glynn
The second Hearts for Horses meeting was a success! Everyone attended the meeting. We also enjoyed
the game that one of the club members, Brooke, created. After the game, the club learned about how
horses behave, their emotions, and how they show those things. When the meeting was almost over, we
all went out to see the horses. We identified what mood each horse was in, and observed the changes
when the treats were brought in! Everyone went home happy. What a great start!
We plan to put together a horse model for the next meeting. Then we will be learning about horse body
parts. For community service, the club plans to have a car wash when it gets warmer, but we don’t know
an exact date yet.
Dairy Goat 4-H PROJECT
Submitted by Sharon TerKeurst, Club Leader
The Dairy Goat Project has been very busy preparing for the November 20, 2011 Dairy Goat
Show at Clay County Fairgrounds. That means reacquainting our goats with all the skills needed to be a
“show” goat. It also means grooming them from head to toe so their dairy qualities can be clearly and
easily seen.
Before the November 20th show we will host a home school tour for the “Homeschoolers by the
Sea” group. That will be at Terk’s Acres on November the 11, 2011. This gives us a chance to share our
knowledge about Dairy Goats and is a good practice session for the show.
An interesting note, Amiee Huskey, the organizer of the Clay County Show is a former member
of our St. Johns County Dairy Goat Project. She now teaches at Asbury Middle School in Clay County
and is the Leader of a
Future Farmers of America Goat Club.
PLEASE NOTE: After the show we will take a break until January 2012. Whether or not
we continue depends on our discovering a Co-Leader by then. If we do, we will invite new members
to join us for the spring session.
