Skill Builder Classes
Approximately 35.50% ($376,843) of total grant dollars to the
RVC Adult Education Program are provided through federal
funding. RVC provides, on a flexible and individualized basis,
reasonable accommodations to students who have disabilities
that may affect their ability to participate in class activities or
meet class requirements. Students with disabilities are encouraged
to contact the Adult Education Office, 815-921-2001, to discuss
their needs for accommodations.

Rock Valley College Offers Skill Builder Classes Through
The Intensive English Program!
n What Are Skill Builder Classes?
Skill Builder classes are for advanced level
ESL students. These classes are designed to
help non-native English speakers transition to
academic/credit classes at Rock Valley College.
There are three types of Skill Builder classes
that are currently available:
1) Pronunciation and Communication
Monday and Friday, 11 a.m. -1:30 p.m.*
Tuesday and Thursday, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.*
2) ESL Reading
Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.*
3) ESL Writing and Grammar
Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.*
Monday and Wednesday, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.*
*Minimum number of enrolled students required to hold class.
n Are There Academic Expectations?
IEP Skill Builder students will have homework, tests,
presentations, and papers. Grades will be given.
Students do not earn academic credits for
coursework.
n How Do I Enroll in Skill Builder Classes?
If you are interested in enrolling in an IEP Skill
Builder Class, you will need to attend a testing
session to have your skills evaluated. Serious
students that demonstrate strong skills in the areas
of English are encouraged to enroll.

n Is There a Cost for the IEP Skill
Builder Classes?
Once you are accepted into a Skill Builder
class, you will attend an informational
session. At that time, you will have the
option to enroll in the class. There is a cost
of $119.00 for each Skill Builder Class. This
cost includes the books you will use
during your class. Taking more than one
Skill Builder Class a semester is to the
discretion of the program coordinator.
n What Happens If I Am Not
Accepted into a Skill Builder
Class?
Students who are not accepted, are strongly
encouraged to enroll in Rock Valley
College’s public ESL classes in order to
strengthen their reading, writing, speaking,
and listening skills. Students may retest for
IEP Skill Builder classes in future semesters.
