Skill Builder Classes<br />

Approximately 35.50% ($376,843) of total grant dollars to the<br />

RVC Adult Education <strong>Program</strong> are provided through federal<br />

funding. RVC provides, on a flexible and individualized basis,<br />

reasonable accommodations to students who have disabilities<br />

that may affect their ability to participate in class activities or<br />

meet class requirements. Students with disabilities are encouraged<br />

to contact the Adult Education Office, 815-921-2001, to discuss<br />

their needs for accommodations.<br />

<strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong> Offers Skill Builder Classes Through<br />

The <strong>Intensive</strong> <strong>English</strong> <strong>Program</strong>!<br />

n What Are Skill Builder Classes?<br />

Skill Builder classes are for advanced level<br />

ESL students. These classes are designed to<br />

help non-native <strong>English</strong> speakers transition to<br />

academic/credit classes at <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

There are three types of Skill Builder classes<br />

that are currently available:<br />

1) Pronunciation and Communication<br />

Monday and Friday, 11 a.m. -1:30 p.m.*<br />

Tuesday and Thursday, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.*<br />

2) ESL Reading<br />

Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.*<br />

3) ESL Writing and Grammar<br />

Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.*<br />

Monday and Wednesday, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.*<br />

*Minimum number of enrolled students required to hold class.<br />

n Are There Academic Expectations?<br />

IEP Skill Builder students will have homework, tests,<br />

presentations, and papers. Grades will be given.<br />

Students do not earn academic credits for<br />

coursework.<br />

n How Do I Enroll in Skill Builder Classes?<br />

If you are interested in enrolling in an IEP Skill<br />

Builder Class, you will need to attend a testing<br />

session to have your skills evaluated. Serious<br />

students that demonstrate strong skills in the areas<br />

of <strong>English</strong> are encouraged to enroll.<br />

n Is There a Cost for the IEP Skill<br />

Builder Classes?<br />

Once you are accepted into a Skill Builder<br />

class, you will attend an informational<br />

session. At that time, you will have the<br />

option to enroll in the class. There is a cost<br />

of $119.00 for each Skill Builder Class. This<br />

cost includes the books you will use<br />

during your class. Taking more than one<br />

Skill Builder Class a semester is to the<br />

discretion of the program coordinator.<br />

n What Happens If I Am Not<br />

Accepted into a Skill Builder<br />

Class?<br />

Students who are not accepted, are strongly<br />

encouraged to enroll in <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong>’s public ESL classes in order to<br />

strengthen their reading, writing, speaking,<br />

and listening skills. Students may retest for<br />

IEP Skill Builder classes in future semesters.<br />
