Hamed Buhaleeba 1955- I 99s I
12 Raceboat & Watersports
Triunph andnagedy
atCowesWorlds
The huge and ambiiious National
Express World Champronship meeting
at Cowes in August proved a success
in most respects, although one which
was overshadowed by the fatal
accident to Hamed Buhaleeba in the
Class ll race.
ln particular, the week was
spectacularly successful for British
drivers (see p88). Charles Burnett lll
and Peter Dredge took Class I
honours in Buzzi Buzzard, Jeremy
and Alastair Watts' Alexi triumphed in
Class lll 2-Litre, and Simon Wood
Power navigated home the winning
boat in the Martini lndurance race.
With more than 70 raceboats
descending upon Cowes Yacht Haven,
from the diminutive 1.3-Litre
monohulls and RlBs to the massive
Martini vessels, space was always
I
going to be tight. But Cowes
]
Committee's ground crew, ably led by
George Hills and Ron Joyce and
assisted by the marina staff, proved
that quarts can fit into pint pots.
0nly with the cooperaiion of
everyone involved, from berth-holders
an{Jocal businesses to the lsle 0f
Wight Council, could the fleet have got
in. But get in they did, and all
prognostications of marine gridlock
came to nought. The parties were not
bad either, but that is another story.
