Head Coach Scott Gernander enters his 24th season at
the helm of the San Jacinto College men’s basketball
program, and his intensity and passion for coaching
has never been more evident. Entering this season,
Gernander owns a 611-154 overall record, amounting
to an astounding .800 win percentage. His record as
San Jac’s all-time winningest coach offers evidence
of his success. He’s taken his teams to the national
tournament on eight different occasions, finishing as the
national runner-up twice. Dozens of players have moved
on to NCAA Division I institutions, and many have gone
pro following their collegiate career. Coach Gernander’s
611 wins rank 11th all-time in National Junior College
Athletic Association (NJCAA) history.
Gernander led his squad to the Region XIV quarterfinals
and a 20-12 overall record during the 2008-09 season.
Three players went on to NCAA Division I institutions –
Maurice McNeil (University of Houston), Devin McDonald
(University of New Orleans), and Andrew Gonzalez
(Houston Baptist University) – a sign of Gernander’s
success as a head coach.
On Jan. 5, 2010, Gernander did what few before him have
done. With a 103-51 win over Lone Star – Tomball, the
Hall of Fame coach notched his 600th career win, making
him one of just 13 active NJCAA head coaches to eclipse
600 career victories. Last season, San Jac had a young
squad that finished 25-6 under Gernander’s leadership.
Carrington Tankson, Dion Prewster, and Marsell Holden
earned All-Region honors, and Gernander was named
the Region XIV coach of the year. At one point during
the season, San Jac was ranked fifth in the nation, and
earned a third seed at the conference tournament.
