2010
Season Outlook
San Jacinto College softball is coming off yet
another 40-win season, which saw individual
and team records fall, and the success of
the program continue to rise. Despite losing
some key players on both sides of the ball
and returning just six players from last sason,
Head Coach Kelly Saenz is looking forward to
the 2010 season.
PITCHING
With the loss of Kelsey McClain, one of the
best pitchers in San Jac history, SJC will look
to returner Jessica Davis and newcomers
Katie Vogt, Laura Martinez and Marissa
Salinas. Davis pitched in 37 games last year,
finishing with a 4.19 ERA and a 10-11 overall
record. Martinez was highly recruited out of
Brazosport High School, where she led the
Lady Ships to the 2009 regional quarterfinals.
“It will be hard to replace Kelsey because she
was just a great player on and off the field,”
noted Saenz, who begins her seventh season
at San Jac. “However, our three new pitchers
are expected to step in and be good.”
INFIELD
Despite losing its top pitcher, San Jac returns
the entire left side of the infield, and adds
four newcomers to the mix. “They all have
great skills offensively and defensively,” noted
Saenz. Included in the infield are sophomores
Rae Cassel and Courtnee Oliphant, who bring
leadership and big bats to the lineup. Cassel
was one of the top hitters last season, batting
.407 en route to earning NFCA All-America
third team honors. Oliphant was solid in the
infield last season while hitting .429.
OUTFIELD
San Jac returns two outfielders from last season
in Destany Blanchard and Megan Knippa, and
adds four newcomers. “They all have strong
arms and good range in the outfield,” said
Saenz. Joining them are Caitlin Wells, Landyn
Myers, Evan Babin and Nicole Andrade.
CATCHER
Each of San Jac’s three catchers will be
sharing time behind the plate. Jean Fusilier is
the lone sophomore, bringing not only defense
to the field, but some offense as well. Last
season, in 59 games, Fusilier hit .329 behind
54 hits including nine doubles and 32 RBIs.
Expect to also see newcomers Megan Matejka
and Kacy Hobbs.
All in all, Saenz has put together another
solid team, all of whom are focused and ready
to step in when and where they’re needed.
Kelly
Saenz
Head Coach
Eastern Kentucky University (1998)
Overall record: 211-126
(six seasons)
Dionna
Lopez
Assistant Coach
Sixth Season
University of
Incarnate Word (2000)
Entering her seventh season at San Jacinto College, Head Coach Kelly
Saenz has built a respected softball program that has taken San Jac to
new levels. Since her arrival at the SJC South campus more than six
years ago, Saenz’s teams have won over 62 percent of their games, and
did what many thought they couldn’t do in 2008 – earn a berth in the
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament.
Last season, Saenz guided San Jac to a 42-19 overall record, 23-9
in conference play, and a second place finish in the Region XIV South
Zone. Four of Saenz’s players earned NJCAA and National Fastpitch
Coaches Association (NFCA) honors, including Kelsey McClain and
Courtney Pettit, who were NFCA second-team All-Americans. McClain
and Pettit also combined for eight school records, leading San Jac to
another 40-win season.
Saenz’s team posted the most successful season in school history
in 2008 when they won the conference tournament, advanced to the
national tournament for the first time in school history, and finished
fourth in the nation. Three players were named to the all-region team
and NJCAA national tournament All-tournament team, four to the NFCA
All-Midwest region team, and two to the NFCA All-American team.
Saenz led the squad to a 41-17 overall record, the most single-season
wins at San Jac for Saenz, and her coaching staff earned the NFCA
Regional Coaching Staff of the Year award for the Midwest Region.
Saenz’s teams and players have had much of the same success since
her arrival at the College in 2004. In 2006 and 2007, Saenz guided San
Jac to sixth-place finishes at the regional tournament. In 2007, three
players were named to the all-region team, as well as to the NFCA all-
Midwest region team, while each season saw three student-athletes
continue their academic and softball careers at NCAA institutions.
In 2004 and 2005, Saenz’s first two seasons at the helm of the San
Jac program, her teams finished second and fourth, respectively, at
the conference tournament. The 2005 team posted a 35-23 overall
record with four players named to the Region XIV all-conference team
and three NFCA all-Americans. In 2004, Saenz’s first season, her team
posted a 38-23 overall mark.
Saenz began her collegiate coaching career at Frank Phillips College in
Borger, Texas, where she spent the 2003 season with the Lady Plainsmen.
Saenz holds a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University,
where she was the 1998 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year.
She went on to earn her master’s degree from the University of South
Dakota. Saenz and her husband, Mike, reside in Houston.
Dionna Lopez, a record-setting pitcher at San Jacinto College, is back for
her sixth season as an assistant coach.
Lopez played during the 1997 and 1998 season for San Jac and ranks
among the all-time leaders in single-season wins (16), earned run
average (1.24 in 1997) and shutouts in a single season (9 in 1998).
After leaving San Jacinto College, Lopez played two seasons at the
University of the Incarnate Word, where she ranks among the Cardinals’
best in career wins (27). Lopez now teaches in the Pasadena Independent
School District. Her main responsibility lies with the San Jac pitchers.
Kevin
Mentzel
Assistant Coach
Kevin Mentzel is in his fourth year as an assistant coach with San Jac,
where his primary duties lie with the hitters. Mentzel is no stranger to the
coaching ranks, with over 20 years experience. He coached baseball for five
years, and also coached with the Texas Ultimates and the Humble Cobras.
Mentzel and his wife, Ginger, live in Alvin with their two daughters Torie
and Shauna.
James
Perry
Assistant Coach
James Perry is in his fourth year as an assistant coach at San Jac. Prior
to arriving at the South campus, Perry coached travel ball for 17 years
with the Texas Ultimates and Humble Cobras. He works primarily with the
hitters and the mental aspect of the game.
Perry and his wife, Gaye, have been married for 29 years and reside in
Alvin. The couple has two daughters, Lanae (27) is married and resides
in Santa Fe, Texas; and Torie (24), who resides in Alvin. Both daughters
played softball, Lanae at Alvin Community College, and Torie at Houston
Baptist University. In his spare time, Perry likes to hunt.
San Jacinto College Softball 2010

San Jacinto College South Campus
Surrounded by the monuments of history, the
industries and maritime enterprises of today,
and the space age of tomorrow, San Jacinto
College is now in its 48th year of serving the
citizens of East Harris County, Texas. The
service area includes the Channelview, Deer
Park, Galena Park, La Porte, Pasadena and
Sheldon Independent School Districts, as
well as portions of the Humble, Pearland, and
Clear Creek school districts.
The college roots date back to May of
1960 when voters in the district approved
the creation of East Harris County Union
Junior College and a seven-member Board
of Regents was established. The name was
changed a few times over its history to its
current San Jacinto Community College
District, although it has always been
informally referred to as San Jacinto College.
In September of 1961, 876 students attended
the College at its location in Pasadena.
Since then, the College has grown to include
three campuses, seven extension centers,
a continuing and professional development
division, distance learning, a dual credit
program with local high schools, an early
college high school in cooperation with Clear
Creek ISD, and an enrollment of over 25,000
credit students each semester.
San Jacinto College is committed to the
citizens of East Harris County. At the core of
our values is student success… the reason
for our being. Our comprehensive community
college mission is to empower students who
come with a wide variety of goals to find the
assistance they need at their college,
San Jacinto College. Our commitment to the
community is to assist in developing a skilled and trained workforce
through the Continuing & Professional Development (CPD) division,
which offers programs and courses for individuals to retain or advance
in their jobs, or make career transitions.
We have made a strong commitment to academic excellence. Our
students choose from more than 140 programs in a variety of fields
including academic transfer
programs to four-year
institutions and a wide
variety of technical and
workforce training programs.
Our award-winning faculty
members are passionate
about teaching.
Students who attend San Jacinto College are offered a wide array of
services, ranging from tutoring and advising at the Student Success
Centers, to financial aid assistance from knowledgeable and welltrained
financial aid advisors. Students are also provided career
assessment testing and assistance with résumés and interviews for
employment. San Jacinto College offers assistance with enrollment,
and the special populations office provides assistance for students
with certain disabilities and / or impairments.
Students come to San Jacinto College with various goals and
aspirations, and we remain committed to their success.
The College has placed
an emphasis on upgrading
facilities and technology to
support student learning
for the last ten years. From
the 1999 Bond Election, the
College’s three campuses
South Campus softball field
have state-of-the-art
Interactive Learning Centers
and Fine Arts Centers. In May 2008, the College passed a $295
million bond referendum to further enhance student success. Through
these funds, we will continue to upgrade facilities, especially in the
areas of science and allied health. We are committed to upgrading
