We engaged a local estate agent to help us look for a property;<br />
<strong>in</strong> a community such as this, word <strong>of</strong> mouth is how bus<strong>in</strong>ess is done. She was<br />
do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rounds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local kafenia (c<strong>of</strong>fee shops), ask<strong>in</strong>g if anyone had<br />
a house <strong>the</strong>y wanted to sell, when she met Gabriel, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village priest,<br />
Papa. Gabriel had just returned to <strong>the</strong> village and was discuss<strong>in</strong>g sell<strong>in</strong>g his<br />
fa<strong>the</strong>r’s house with his sibl<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Papa was much loved and respected – <strong>the</strong> villagers always speak about<br />
him fondly. Buy<strong>in</strong>g his house seems to have given us credibility; <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
when I was asked where we were stay<strong>in</strong>g, I would proudly reply that I had<br />
bought ‘Papa’s spiti’ (Papa’s house). The response was always an enthusiastic<br />
smile, and a warm conversation, little <strong>of</strong> which I could understand, would start.<br />
Papa came to <strong>the</strong> village <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Seventies and lived <strong>in</strong> this house until he died.<br />
His wife lived on <strong>the</strong>re until she too passed away.<br />
We met Gabriel <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> platia (village square). Gabriel is a large-framed,<br />
polite and quiet man with a few words <strong>of</strong> English. Later, I learned that Gabriel<br />
had spent much <strong>of</strong> his life <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>. In fact, he had married <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> 1965<br />
and had only been back to <strong>the</strong> village three times. He said that when he left<br />
<strong>the</strong> village it was a community <strong>of</strong> 3000 and was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> largest villages<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area. It had around thirteen kafenia, but now <strong>the</strong>re are just three, and<br />
a population <strong>of</strong> around 600.<br />
Gabriel led our party – me, my friend Domenica and <strong>the</strong> estate agent –<br />
through <strong>the</strong> narrow streets and way up towards <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> village. We reached<br />
a Turkish water founta<strong>in</strong> below an enormous plat<strong>in</strong>o (plane tree). These engraved<br />

Back to <strong>the</strong> little apartment <strong>in</strong> Brooklyn I lived<br />
<strong>in</strong> for a month two summers ago. I rode a bike<br />
everywhere, wore little shorts and huge glitzy<br />
earr<strong>in</strong>gs, went to many parties on ro<strong>of</strong>tops, and<br />
ate mangos with hot sauce from street vendors<br />
every day like <strong>in</strong> a movie. Best. Summer. Ever.<br />

The bedroom. I live <strong>in</strong> a teeny-t<strong>in</strong>y two-room<br />
house – <strong>the</strong> bedroom is my sanctuary. It’s <strong>the</strong><br />
only room where I can escape <strong>the</strong> computer<br />
and <strong>the</strong> TV. It faces west, so it gets <strong>the</strong> most<br />
beautiful warm low light <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon.<br />
What does a work<strong>in</strong>g day look like for you?<br />
If I’m good, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g: up at 6 a.m.;<br />
gym at 6.30 a.m.; home at 7.30 a.m.; breakfast,<br />
c<strong>of</strong>fee, <strong>the</strong>n at my desk 8.30 a.m. Email, email,<br />

email, <strong>the</strong>n perhaps a meet<strong>in</strong>g or two with an<br />
that is) totally by accident. Lucy Feag<strong>in</strong>s was<br />
advertiser, a <strong>design</strong>er I’m <strong>in</strong>terview<strong>in</strong>g, a new<br />
just born one <strong>of</strong> those nosy-parker types, brand I’m pr<strong>of</strong>il<strong>in</strong>g. Lunch on <strong>the</strong> run, <strong>the</strong>n<br />
but <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nicest possible way, an untra<strong>in</strong>ed perhaps a house shoot <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon –<br />
sleuth turned props stylist who likes sniff<strong>in</strong>g ei<strong>the</strong>r on my own, with my trusty tripod <strong>in</strong> tow,<br />
out <strong>design</strong> and stuff <strong>in</strong> her hometown or with a photographer I’ve roped <strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> day.<br />

with <strong>the</strong> poor neglected BF; <strong>the</strong>n back to<br />
a month. There’ll be a <strong>book</strong>, a TV series and I’m<br />
work at 8.30 p.m. till about midnight or<br />
sure a radio show <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>re somewhere! Hers is<br />
so – download<strong>in</strong>g pics, generat<strong>in</strong>g content,<br />
a paperless <strong>of</strong>fice but filled with loads <strong>of</strong> extra upload<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g day’s post. If I’m<br />
pages to rem<strong>in</strong>d her <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> goodness that is <strong>the</strong> not good, I elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> gym, and replace<br />
pr<strong>in</strong>ted word. Oh Lucy, we gush you back. <strong>the</strong> fresh fish with Indian takeaway :)<br />

Vanessa is possibly <strong>the</strong> cleverest person <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> creative universe. And like <strong>the</strong> name<br />
<strong>of</strong> her tumblrz<strong>in</strong>e, she’s also supernice.<br />
She shares her l<strong>of</strong>t <strong>in</strong> New York with<br />
her husband Simon, her kids Yas and<br />
Harper, and a gu<strong>in</strong>ea pig called Fudge.<br />
Most New Yorkers sweat over <strong>the</strong>ir realestate<br />
decisions (and rightly so, given<br />
a laundry is a luxury), but when Vanessa<br />
