designer interviews and information
about London’s must-attend
consumer fashion event, The Edit
will be keeping you updated in the
run up to September’s big weekend.
We’ve called this issue The Retail
Therapy issue because even though
we’ve all got Olympic fever, we still
know that our favourite national
sport is really shopping.
So that’s why, in The Big Weekend
Just Got Bigger, we start to whet
your appetite for London’s shopping
Olympics at Vodafone London Fashion
Weekend. A huge thanks as always
to our sponsors as there will be lots
of fashion related treats in store as we
start to give you the low down on what
you can look forward to.
In It’s Official, Shopping Is Good
For You, we share the happy news
that boffins in America have discovered
what we’ve all known for, like, ever.
It’s nice to have proof though, isn’t it?
In Fashion Loves And The Ones
That Got Away, we speak to four
dedicated fashion followers who
reveal the pieces they couldn’t live
without and the ones that slipped
through their fingers.
And lastly, in our new column,
Spotlight On, we get up close and
personal with some of the designers
behind the pieces you definitely won’t
want to miss out on in September.
In this issue we’ve been speaking to
designer Pauric Sweeney and in
future issues we’ll be hooking up with
Hermione de Paula and chatting to
the guys behind Aubin & Wills. You
can find all three designer brands at
Vodafone London Fashion Weekend
this September.

NEWS
FLASH
IT’S OFFICIAL,
SHOPPING IS
GOOD FOR YOU

SHOPPING
REALLY
DOES MAKE
US HAPPIER
News just in from the
US reveals what many of
us have always known –
that shopping really does
make us happier.
The study, entitled ‘Retail
Therapy: a strategic
effort to improve mood’
and published in the
Journal of Psychology
and Marketing in the US
earlier this year found
that buying something
nice provided ‘ a lasting
positive impact on
mood’ and ‘few, if any,
emotional side effects.’
The authors of the study,
Stein Atalay and Margaret
Meloy, based their
findings after conducting
interviews with hundreds
of consumers at shopping
centres across the US.
They also asked shoppers
to keep diaries detailing
their shopping behaviour,
recording their buying
habits and mood, as
well as any purchases
they regretted.
Of those surveyed,
62 per cent said that
they had bought
something to cheer
themselves up while
28 per cent had gone
shopping to celebrate
a personal event.
So, the message is clear.
Shopping isn’t just good
for your soul, it’s good
for your spirit too so
make sure you’ve got
your tickets booked for
Vodafone London Fashion
Weekend this September
and get ready to shop.
Don’t worry, the experts
told you so.
FAMOUS
SHOPPING
SPREES
£13,000 ON
LIGHTS
Earlier this month, Jennifer Aniston
popped into a vintage lighting
store in New York City and
dropped a reported $20,000 (that’s
approximately £13,000) on lights
for her LA mansion.
SEVEN
HERMES BAGS
On a recent trip to Paris, Kim
Kardashian is said to have snapped
up seven Hermes bags including a
rare crocodile skin one. At upwards
of £5,000 a bag, that’s a lot of
Hermes to take home to Hollywood.
THREE SHIRTS,
A JACKET &
TWO PAIRS
OF TROUSERS
When David Beckham was left on
the subs bench for a vital Manchester
United vs Real Madrid game, he turned
to shopping for a pick me up, splashing
out on more than £10,000 in the
Emporio Armani store on three shirts,
a jacket and two pairs of trousers.
$4.5 MILLION
(£2.7MILLION)
ESTATE FOR
HER MUM
£1MILLION
SHOPPING
SPREE IN
MILAN
Becks hasn’t got anything on his
wife, though. Victoria Beckham loves
shopping so much that it’s reported
she spends up to £500,000 on fashion
a year and recently went on a £1million
shopping spree in Milan. ‘I can’t help it,’
she says. ‘When I see something
I like, I buy it in every colour and I buy
shoes in every colour to match, as well
as handbags. If I could, I’d go shopping
every single day. Now there’s someone
we’d like to go shopping with…
Former pop princess, Britney Spears
has admitted that she’s an emotional
shopper, once saying, “I can be in
the dump of dumpsters and go buy a
pair of new shoes, and then it’s okay.”
She doesn’t just spend her money
on clothes though, after her parents
got separated in 2002, she bought
a $20,000 bed (£13,000) and a $4.5
million (£2.7million) estate for her Mum.

FASHION LOVES
AND THE ONE
THAT GOT AWAY…
What’s the favourite item
in your wardrobe?
What’s the piece that you
didn’t buy and will always
regret missing out on?
Four fashion forward
Londoners take us
inside their wardrobes to
reveal the pieces they love
and have also lost.
WHO: HOLLY OSBORNE, 37,
HEAD OF CLIENT
SERVICES AT LANDOR
I’M SO HAPPY I BOUGHT:
My Marc Jacobs quilted Chinese jacket.
Bought in NYC 11 years ago. It’s still the
one piece I can put on and leave the
house feeling cool, playful, and chic –
no matter my mood.
I’LL ALWAYS REGRET:
Dolce & Gabbana emerald-green satin
corset dress. Killer. My friend made me
try it on while I was tagging along on a
spending spree at Saks. She was flush
with cash, but I was broke. It fit like it
was made for me; made for me to own
any man, woman, or child who crossed
my path in that dress. Alas, at the time
it was more money than I made in a
month, so I left it behind… and have
regretted it ever since.
WHO: SARAH JANE THAIN, 34,
LIFE COACH AT
ROCKETCOACHING.COM
I’M SO HAPPY I BOUGHT:
My baby pink silk Marc Jacobs bomber
jacket. I had my eye on it for ages but
it was far too expensive. I popped to
Harvey Nichols and somehow it had
gone into the sale with an unbelievable
price tag which was about 75 %
less than the original price. I literally
squealed with excitement and ran to
the till to make my purchase.
I love wearing it as I can glam it up or
wear it with jeans and a white t-shirt
and heels. Every time I wear it, it
reminds me that life can surprise you
in a multitude of ways every day and
when it does, grab it with both hands
(and your credit card!)
I’LL ALWAYS REGRET:
I had my eye on an amazing Balenciaga
dress for an Ibiza trip. It was on sale
at an amazing price but I didn’t buy it
because it was just a little bit too small.
I always wish I’d bought it. I could
have got away with it and just the
thought of wearing it should have
got me out running.
WHO: TESSA CREAGH-BARRY, 24,
EVENTS ASSISTANT AT
BRITISH FASHION COUNCIL
I’M SO HAPPY I BOUGHT:
My Stella McCartney jumpsuit. It is a
simple smart black one and is such a
classic. A tip for all tall girls out there,
invest in a Stella jumpsuit, you won’t
regret it.
I’LL ALWAYS REGRET:
In my first season working on Vodafone
London Fashion Weekend, I was
deliberating over a Sophie Hulme bag
all weekend. The price was brilliant and
it was a beautiful bag but I decided
against it because I was trying to be
careful with money. Needless to say I
didn’t buy it and have regretted it ever
since. It may sound silly but there have
been so many times when that bag
would have made my outfit.
WHO: TRACEY TAYLOR, 38,
HEAD OF HR AT PCUBED
I’M SO HAPPY I BOUGHT:
My black Seafolly shift dress. I love
that’s it’s just so easy to wear and
I know I’ll never be over or under
dressed in it. I can dress it up or down,
wear for work or play and can wear it
as a dress, as a long top over leggings
or teamed with tights. I often add a
scarf or a jacket depending on how
smart I need to look.
I’LL ALWAYS REGRET:
I think I have an obsession with black
dresses and was annoyed to have let
a Monsoon black 1920’s style flapper
dress slip away. I loved the look of this
dress, but was quite expensive and I
just did not have a specific need for it
at the time. I love the clothes from this
era and would have just loved to have
it in my wardrobe. I took the sensible
decision not to buy it, and when I went
back it was gone and out of stock. I’ve
learnt my lesson now and have far too
many black dresses in my wardrobe!
