KVETA PACOVSKA
Born in 1928 in Prague, Kvěˇta
Pacovská graduated from the
Prague School of Applied Arts,
where she studied Czech modernism
and was introduced to
the European avant-garde. Her
work merges the aesthetic traditions
of children’s book illustrators
with influences from
modern artists, such as Wassily
Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Joan
Miró. She draws, paints, and
creates collages in which she
experiments with the links
between image and text.
In addition to illustrating nearly
sixty books, Ms. Pacovská has
held numerous one-women
shows and regularly takes part
in international art exhibitions.
Fittingly, she received the Hans
Christian Andersen Medal for
children’s book illustration in
1992.
Hans Christian Andersen’s moving tale of a poor
little girl at Christmastime has touched generations
of readers. Now internationally renowned
illustrator Květa Pacovská brings a fresh, modern
approach to this story, one unlike any version yet
published.
This is the tale of a little girl who wanders the
streets, freezing and homeless. As she huddles in
a corner between two buildings, all she has to
keep herself warm are some matches. Amazingly,
each match sparks brilliant visions of a better life—
warm food, glittering Christmas trees, and a loving
family. The little girl cannot resist lighting one after
another to keep the images coming, until at last
she glimpses a bright place free from fear and
hunger.
Illustrated with extraordinary originality, each
page springs to life with imagination. With an eye
for bold colors and wittily avant-garde compositions,
Ms. Pacovská has created a truly novel vision
for this poignant tale.
Little Red Cap (also known as Little Red Riding Hood) is the
most popular of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, loved the
world over. No other story has been told as many different
ways, or illustrated as often, as this tale about
“a sweet little girl, beloved by everyone who laid eyes
on her, but most of all by her grandmother.”
The Czech artist Květa Pacovská renowned for her
unique illustration style, tackles this classic tale with
her usual creative flair. As the book progresses, she
builds up almost musical motifs of theme and variation as
the two great characters — the fearsome wolf and the
innocent Little Red Cap—make their famous meeting. With
stunning originality, Ms. Pacovská invites us to see this wellknown
tale in a totally new way.
An acting troupe performs a special show for the moon when she comes
down for a visit. Features split pages that can be flipped to combine different
characters and costumes.
For those inclined to muse on the secret life of the moon (``Where is the moon
when he is not in the sky?'') this unusual picture book offers a romantic
answer: at the theater. One night, while the actors are sleeping, the clown
sees a sliver of moonlight across the theater floor. Inspired, he climbs up to
the moon and invites the moon to visit their stage. ``The moon sits in the theater
and his gentle light spills onto the stage. One by one the players wake
up.'' And so the midnight play begins. Pacovsk's (The Flower King) avantgarde
artwork (sophisticated, clownish figures with bulging eyes and bright
red noses) is enhanced by fancy paper engineering. The moon is cut out
from the cover and first few pages, creating a window into the book; and a
die-cut moon is fastened to the book's spine by a length of twine, so that it
can be inserted into any of the cut-out moon ``holes.'' The actors themselves
are featured on tri-cut pages, so that heads, torsos and legs can be
rearranged in various configurations. Absurd yet fun; the high price tag, however,
will deter all but the truly ``moonstruck.'' All ages.
Publishers Weekly
"A book is architecture for me.
It is a given sealed space into
which I compose painted, written,
cut and empty pages.
"A drawing is such as it is. It
should not and cannot pretend.
It expresses our feelings and
our thoughts. I love all materials.
They are tempting. I like to
work with all. But that isn’t possible.
When I choose a material, I
conform to its rules and I try not
to violate them…
"White and black are not
included in the colour spectrum
but for me they are colours and
mean maximum contrast. And
maximum contrast is the maximum
beauty.
I am striving for maximum contrast.
Red and green. It depends
on the relation, proportion,
rhythm, size, amount and
how we placed colours together.
It is like music. Each individual
tone is beautiful by itself and in
certain groupings we create
new dimensions, harmony,
disharmony, symphonies,
operas and books for children."
"Květa Pacovská was born in 1928 in Prague,
where she still lives and works. She began her
career as an illustrator in the fifties, specialising in
object books, three-dimensional tactile works and
illustrations of children’s stories. A sense of playfulness
is an essential characteristic of her work. Her
works include bizarre collages, mirrors and superimpositions
of different kinds of paper, cut-outs
capable of generating ever new characters and
stories, as in the miniature theatre of Midnight Play.
Her illustrations are immediately recognisable for
the use of bold, saturated colours without nuances,
a dense style and almost childlike use of lines.
Her passion for geometric and abstract shapes is
often based on the use of linguistic signs, as in
Alphabet in which letters and numbers merge with
her creatures..."
wide range of artistic creation.
There is a tale that fills the imagination of children, a tale of a beautiful and
sweet girl who is badly treated. It is a tale that has been retold by so many; do
we need yet another version of Cinderella? And then there is Květa Pacovská,
whose unusual renditions of classics by Anderson and the Brothers Grimm have
set a new standard. Who better to tell the story again and bring something new
to the classic!
Květa Pacovská guides us to where imagination takes over from reality and a
new world comes to life. Just as with The Little Match Girl, Little Red Cap and
Hänsel & Gretel, Pacovská’s Cinderella is something special!
When asked about her approach she said, “My intention is not to illustrate the
texts of these classic tales, but to try and find a new degree of interpretation and
then visually bring it all to life.”
Charles Perrault, an author and poet, living in 17th century France was a
distinguished member of the Académie française. He was also embroiled in the
famous literary battle between those favoring the literature of Antiquity and
those who attempted to prove the superiority of modern literature of the time.
He is probably best known, however, for his Tales of Mother Goose (Les Contes
de ma Mère l'Oie) which brought him great popularity and marked the dawn of
a new genre, the fairy tale. Little Red Cap, Cinderella, Tom Thumb, and
Donkeyskin along with others brought a freshness, intelligence, and beauty to
the world of children’s literature which continues to fascinate and amaze
readers to this day.
The story of the little mermaid who fell in love with a human boy is wellknown
and loved by millions—but in the hands of internationally acclaimed
illustrator Lisbeth Zwerger, it feels brand-new. First published in 1837, this
poignant tale of unrequited love and self-sacrifice helped establish Hans
Christian Andersen as one of the foremost writers of fairy tales in the world. It
was, Andersen said, “the only one of my works that has affected me while I
was writing it.”
Lisbeth Zwerger’s signature illustrations add fresh whimsy and charm to
Andersen’s creation, and her art harmonizes perfectly with Anthea Bell’s
brand-new translation. Zwerger has become
synonymous with beautifully illustrated editions of the classics of children’s literature—this
HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
was born in Denmark on April 2,
1805, and trained for a career
on the stage before he became
a writer. During his lifetime he
achieved international success
as a playwright and novelist,
but it is his fairytales that are still
read and loved by children and
adults around the globe today.
Among his many widely
beloved stories are “The Little
Match Girl,” “The Ugly
Duckling,” “The Snow Queen,”
and “The Little Mermaid.”
Andersen died in 1875, but his
name now lives on in one of the
most sought-after awards in
children’s literature: the Hans
Lisbeth Zerger, winner of the 1990 Hans Christian Andersen Medal, brings her
distinctive talent to the classic Andersen fairytale of a foolish Prince who
seeks to marry the Emperor’s daughter, and the even more
foolish Princess who fails to recognize his true worth.
When the Princess refuses him, he disguises himself as a
swineherd and plays her favorite songs when she passes
him by. When she finally warms up to him, he reveals his
true identity but leaves her all alone. It’s a delightfully
silly tale of human nature, brought wonderfully to life
by the incomparable Ms. Zwerger.
“The translation, vigorous and fresh, retains the acerbic
tone as well as Andersen’s characteristic storytelling
style….
The pictures are both comic and earthy.”
Lisbeth Zwerger is one of the world’s preeminent children’s book artists, and
one of the most original interpreters of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic
fairytales.
This handsome edition, containing eight stories, has a few old favorites and
some lesser-known tales that can only be found in complete anthologies.
Bell's translations are crisp, offering Andersen's wry observations and
romantic prose in clean, precise English. The book is asethetically pleasing--
long and narrow, with thick, creamy white pages; a fine typeface; and plenty
of white space framing text and illustration. Zwerger's elegant pencil-andwatercolor
illustrations are typically restrained in palette, utilizing mostly
earthen tones. Her compositions are classically balanced, with uncluttered
backgrounds, and realistic characters, costumed fancifully. Each story
begins with a simple headpiece decoration and is accompanied by one or
more plates. A lovely volume
This lovely collection, originally
published in a larger size, now
returns in a slipcased giftbook
edition. It includes ten favorite
stories, such as “The Princess
and the Pea” and “The
Emperor’s New Clothes,”
as well as lesser-known but
equally wonderful stories,
all featuring Ms.
Zwerger’s distinctively
elegant, witty illustrations.
This superb
anthology is bound
to become a treasured
part of every
child’s library.
Brothers Grimm stories illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger
...sure to appeal to her many fans
THE BROTHERS GRIMM
Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm
were German academics who
were best known for publishing
collections of folk tales and
fairy tales and for their work in
linguistics, relating to how the
sounds in words shift over time
(Grimm's Law). They are among
the best known story tellers of
novellas from Europe, allowing
the widespread knowledge of
such tales as Rumpelstiltskin,
Snow White, Sleeping Beauty,
Rapunzel, Cinderella, and
Hansel and Gretel, altogether
about 150 stories.
Lisbeth Zwerger is one of the preeminent interpreters of classic fairytales,
and here she presents her version of The Grimm Brothers’ The Bremen Town
Musicians, a tale of four beleaguered animals who outwit some frightful
robbers. In this little-known, hilarious tale, there’s a donkey who can no
longer work, a dog who can no longer hunt, a cat who is too old to chase
mice, and a rooster who’s scheduled for tomorrow night’s menu. They
decide to band together to seek their fortune as musicians in the town of
Bremen.
But they get more than they bargained for when they stumble upon a
gang of robbers. Can they find a clever way to turn their dreadful singing to
their advantage? The expert translation by Anthea Bell brings the full flavor
of the original text to life, in a unique book sure to appeal to Ms. Zwerger’s
many fans.
contrast between the innocent children and the dark backgrounds of
betrayal and danger they encounter. In the end, Hansel and Gretel is
a hopeful tale, for trust and courage triumph, and wickedness receives its just
reward.
This wonderful reissue of a childhood favorite will be cherished by children
and adults everywhere who appreciate beauti-ful books.
When a little girl in a red cap puts her picnic basket over her arm and
sets off through the woods to grandmother’s house, one of the
best-loved fairy tales of all time unfolds.
Lisbeth Zwerger has brought the full range of her highly
acclaimed talents to the illustrations in her version of Little
Red Cap, which was named a New York Times Best Illustrated
Book in 1983. No little girl has ever been so winsome and
naughty, no wolf so beguiling, no huntsman so valiant and
so brave.
This wonderfully welcome reissue of this timeless story is
sure to be enjoyed by children, by the adults who read to them,
and by all who love and appreciate beautiful books.
“And what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without pictures…?”
So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for
the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the
pleasure of making a daisy-chain woud be worth the trouble of getting
up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a white rabbit with pink
eyes ran close by her.
There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so
very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, “Oh dear!
Oh dear!
I shall be too late!” (When she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to
her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed
quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket,
and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet,
for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a
rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket or a watch to take out of it, and
burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and was just in
time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.
Robert Inpen & Charles Dickens
2 Masterpieces in one volume
CHARLES DICKENS was born in
Portsmouth on 7 February 1812,
the second of eight children.
As a child he was witness to
much poverty and hardship –
an influence that later became
a theme in many of his works.
Dickens began his career
as a journalist, and his first fiction,
a series of short stories
called The Pickwick Papers,
became a publishing phenomenon.
Following its success, he
went on to become one of the
most important novelists of the
nineteenth century, writing such
acclaimed works as Oliver
Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, and
Great Expectations, and creating
some of the richest stories
and most memorable characters
in English literature.
Also a passionate campaigner
against poverty,
Dickens wrote A Christmas
Carol in response to a government
report on the abuse of
child labourers, vowing that he
would strike a ‘sledge-hammer
blow… on behalf of the Poor
Man’s Child’.
This timeless classic by Charles Dickens has been a favourite Christmas
book for generations. Through the story of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge,
who is taught the true meaning of Christmas by a series of ghostly visitors,
Dickens created a vivid Christmas fable about the message of goodwill
towards mankind. On its publication in 1843, the book became an instant
sensation and ever since it has had an enduring influence on Christmas
traditions, becoming inextricably linked with our celebrations of the festival.
This magnificent new edition of the classic tale, complete and unabridged,
has been handsomely illustrated by the award-winning artist
Robert Ingpen. He superbly captures the atmosphere of Victorian London
and brings to life the unforgettable characters that Dickens created.
This edition also includes his short story, A Christmas Tree, which first
appeared in 1850 as the Christmas highlight in the twopenny weekly,
Household Words. Written
by Dickens to be read
aloud and enjoyed by
old and young alike,
this charming story
vividly evokes the
delights of a Victorian
Christmas.
has been a childhood favorite all over the world. Now Robert Ingpen brings
his spectacular adaptation to new generations
of readers.
Danish tale by Anthea Bell, this is the
timeless story of an awkward little bird’s
eventually shunned by his own mother. The little
bird leaves his home, embarking on a brave
seasons—only to discover that the beauty he
was seeking was inside him all along.
Sharing means Giving, this is the
message
It’s Christmas time in the forest, but this year there
isn’t much for the animals to celebrate. It’s been a
cold, snowy winter and food is scarce. Clara,
a little deer, is worried about Christmas, so she
wishes on a star for help.
The next day Clara hears the sound of bells in the
distance. As she follows the magical sound, she is
joined by a squirrel and a rabbit. When they
stumble onto a stash of nuts and berries, they
decide to share it with everyone in the forest. After
all, sharing is giving, and that’s what Christmas is
all about.
This beautiful, heart-warming story is about giving
and sharing and helping wishes come true.
A river takes a long and winding path on its way to the ocean. It begins as a
humble trickle high in the mountains, and flows through many landscapes
as it grows bigger. Here we witness this journey from the point of view of five
little pinecones, who ride the current to find new homes. Along the way, they
encounter a woodsy stream, a rushing waterfall, a marshy fork and a bigcity
delta.
One by one, they choose to stop and stay in a particular place, leaving the
others to continue the journey. But what will happen when there is only one
lone pinecone left to drift out to sea? Perfect for introducing young children
to ecology and geography, this book brings an original point of view to a
little-studied subject.
1973 in Bavaria, Germany. After
studying to be an art teacher at
the University in Regensburg,
she soon discovered her
passion for illustration. In 1997
she was accepted to the
Academy of Applied Arts and
Design in Munster, where she
received her degree in 2005.
Fritz’s Fish is her first published
children’s book.
Fritz’s home is no place for pets. It’s a small apartment high up
on the fourth floor. Plus, Fritz’s father is allergic to
animal hair. Even when Fritz comes up with the perfect pet – a fish! – his
mother tells him he’s too young.
But one day the river overflows, flooding the town, and Fritz finds a fish he
can call his own right in the street! Though the homesick fish doesn’t like living
in the bathtub, Fritz is determined to make him happy. Can Fritz prove
he’s mature enough to give his new friend a permanent home?
This heart-warming story, charmingly illustrated by Daniela Bunge, offers a
priceless child’s-eye view of what friendship is all about.
Grandma and Grandpa don't love each other
anymore. Or at least they don't think they do...
Grandma says Grandpa watches too much television
and never shares his chocolate pudding.
Grandpa says Grandma paints everything blue,
and she steals all his chocolate pudding.
PDF
But I've seen how sad they are when they're apart,
and I've got a plan that just might bring them
back together. Maybe blending two lives together
can be just like knitting two colors together
to make a beautiful scarf! Maybe a little time is all
they need to make them remember how they
really feel about each other...
The contrasts between Grandpa’s reds and
Grandma’s blues are striking and the whitewash
backgrounds accentuate this. All the rooms
depicted seem absolutely huge but not unbelievably
so, as the story is told from the child narrator’s
point of view. This vastness is reinforced by the fact
that the book is composed entirely of doublepage
spreads (with the exception of the title page
and final page which is an illustrated epilogue).
There are little things happening just shy of the
main action in each scene, little things that make
reading and re-reading with someone else so
much fun. These tiny details also foreshadow the
conclusion of the story which, though predictable,
is still entirely satisfying.
It’s so hard to play with other children when you’re
shy, as one little boy can tell you. He hides under
the table when his parents’ friends come over,
and at school he’s too timid to make friends. But
when he sees a mysterious girl who hides in the
cherry tree every day after school, he wants to be
brave enough to approach her. He gets himself a
dog — the bravest dog he can find. And when his
new pal takes a liking to the girl, the two become
fast friends. She too is very bashful, but now they
play together every day after school. Though her
family will be moving away at the end of the year,
they promise to keep meeting at the tree
whenever it’s cherry time. Here is a beautiful,
delicate story about learning to overcome your
shyness and reach out to others.
GIAN CASTY was born l9l4 in
painting at the most prestigious
Swiss and French art institutions,
he soon began experimenting
in glass painting. His
glass piece Christophorus was
purchased in 1955 as a gift for
Pope Pius XII on his eightieth
birthday. Casty’s work is hung
throughout Switzerland in public
buildings, businesses and
churches. The influence of glass
painting is evident in Casty’s
picture books:
The figures are reduced to the
simplest surfaces, often by limiting
the outlines.
The colors are dazzling and
broken with strong dabs of
color. Casty died in Basel,
Switzerland in 1979.
MISCHA DAMJAN is the penname
of the late Dimitrije
with his wife Brigitte, of Nord-Sü
company of North-South Books.
He grew up in Belgrade,
Yugoslavia, studied at Belgrade
University and at the Sorbonne
in Paris, and began practicing
law. During World War II he was
taken prisoner by the German
army. After three years in
captivity, he escaped to
Switzerland, where he began
writing. He wrote over twenty
books for children and adults.
His books for North-South
include Atuk, The Little Seahorse
and the Christmas Pearl, and
The Big Squirrel and the Little
Rhinoceros.
The lights come up, the circus band begins to play, the ringmaster introduces
the first act, “Presenting the clown Petronius, and Theodore, the stubborn
donkey!” The audience cheers then quiets in anticipation. But nothing
happens. The clown and the donkey refuse to move. The ringmaster cracks
his whip. But the clown says, “No!” He’s tired of playing the fool. Instead, he
wants to be a storyteller.
And the clown and the donkey aren’t the only circus performers to rebel.
A dancing pony, a lion, a giraffe, and a little white dog, all tired of doing
their tricks, join them as they escape from the circus and set off to find true
happiness.
Written by the late Dimitrije Sidjanski, cofounder of Nord-Süd Verlag, parent
company of North-South Books, The Clown Said No! was the very first book
published by the Swiss company over forty-five years ago. Reprinted with
the original illustrations by Gian Casty, this simple story will inspire a new
generation of children to follow their own dreams.
JEAN-PIERRE was born in
Nantes, France in 1959, and
grew up in Lyon. He studied art
at École des Arts Décoratifs de
Strasbourg, and he has since
created several picture books.
Mr. Corderoch is married to the
illustrator
Eve Tharlet, and they have two
sons, three dogs, two cats, two
horses, two donkeys, and live in
Priziac, France, in a very old
house which he has renovated
himself.
Max thinks school is boring, and his
Uncle Bill’s idea of livening things up
doesn’t sound too exciting either. He
gives Max a sack of flower seeds
for his birthday. At first Max
is skeptical, but he follows
his uncle’s instructions
and scatters the seeds
on his way to school. From
that moment on, magical
changes take place.
Wildflowers begin to grow
throughout the city, where
they’ve never been before.
Suddenly the town is buzzing
with color and life, and Max becomes the most popular kid in school as his
class gets to pick the flowers, draw them, and study them. It turns out that
Max got the best birthday gift, after all. Here is a story about how small
actions can make a big difference in your life, and in the life of an entire
community.
... is a story about gossip and the resulting defamation of character.
It starts very modestly in the park of a zoo when two guards are talking about
the wild Wombat who will arrive the following day. The parrot picks it up but
exaggerates when telling his friend the seal. And from there on news travels
until even the lions of the zoo imagine a huge monster arriving the next day.
No wonder there are no animals around when the case with the wild
Wombat arrives.
Kids love this story, screaming and yelling when the author tells the stories at
school readings and shows the pictures which transform into larger
and more and more scary monsters.
AYANO IMAI Born in London,
United States, splitting time
between Connecticut and Los
Japan in 1994, she studied
Surely someone in the big, wide world will love and
care for him.
But in this delightful story by the acclaimed Ayano
This is the newest title by Ayano Imai, the story is based on Grimm’s Puss IN
Boots, but has a very different ending.
Following are reviews about Ayano’s recent book CHESTER:
“I just love the very ethereal paintings. The layout, typeface and design of
this book all complement the endearing story.
The end papers are absolutely charming. I would buy this book just for the
illustrations, but the story, and the way the illustrations add information and
meaning to the words, is wonderful. With all the commercial junk out there, it
is nice to see a book that is thoughtfully created, and one that you will want
to read again and again.”
Review:
"This slight story is made special by rather quirky soft pastel illustrations."
School Library Journal
Review:
"Imai's illustrations are a delight, in a soft, dreamy palette with a hint of mystery."
keeps its focus throughout." Booklist
ANGELA KEHLENBECK
Born in 1959, Angela
Kehlenbeck lived in Hamburg,
Calcutta, and Frankfurt before
she moved to Bremen,where
she finishedhigh school. She
studied psychology, ethnology,
journalism, traveled through
South America, and worked
with a photographer, but it wasn’t
until she drew a short funny
story for a friend who was at
hospital, and the friend suggested
she make it her career,
that she began illustration.
In 1996, Ms. Kehlenbeck introduced
her first picture book
during the bookfair in Frankfurt.
By chance, Michael
Neugebauer saw it and agreed
to publish it, and so began her
promising children’s book
career. Pashmina is her eighth
book for children.
Christmas is coming, but all Simon has are beans and potatoes for his
family’s feast. When he stumbles upon a goat in the mountains, he’s
delighted to have found a perfect Christmas roast. But the children are
horrified! They can’t eat the little animal — she is too beautiful. They
convince their parents to spare her, and they name her Pashmina.
Soon their kindness pays off. Pashmina’s hair grows in so quickly that
they have to keep shaving her, and spin her wool into beautiful yarn for
making socks and clothes. When they sell her mohair at the market, they
earn enough money to support the family through the rest of the winter.
From then on Simon tells the story of the little goat who escaped the
cooking pot “by a hair…”
A poignant story — perfect for Christmas.
JULIE WINTZ-LITTY was born in
1971 in Annecy, France. She
began her studies as a graphic
designer at the Art Academy in
Lyon and later received her
degree as an Illustrator from
Emil Cohl College, also in Lyon.
Julie has always loved riding
horses, so it is not surprising that
she fell in love with her riding
instructor and later married
him. They have three children,
whose dolls are also avid riders.
Litty’s oldest daughter entered
her first jumping competition at
the age of eight. It was the
atmosphere
of this experience that inspired
this book.
Sometimes a dog just needs to howl the blues, like when he’s
stuck on a leash at the park. Sometimes barking with joy is
what’s called for, like when he’s being fed. But nothing is
as fraught with highs and lows as being in love, as
our canine hero learns when he goes in search of
Daisy, the prettiest lady dog in town. Sometimes a
little dog’s dreams just get ahead of him.
Though this pup may not always get what he
wants, in the end he knows he’s got it pretty
good—how many of us get to be cuddled by
the fireplace for doing nothing at all? Paul
Banks has adapted his hilarious song
about the canine world into a story of
longing and love that will cheer the little
puppy in all of us.
Chloe loves the pony-riding competitions. But when she gets stuck with Niki,
a slow, stubborn pony, she knows she’s going to lose. Luckily, her Uncle Tony
is on hand to give her a special, magic riding baton. With it she’ll be able to
make any pony ride like the wind! Sure enough, Chloe and Niki deliver a
perfect performance. Race after race, the two are inseparable as the
magic baton propels them to victory.
But what happens the day of the final competition when Chloe loses the
baton? As she finds out, sometimes a little magic goes a long way. Here is a
delightful story about the power of believing in yourself that is sure to
delight young horse lovers everywhere.
When Tom comes home after a day out with
Daddy, he is sad and angry because Daddy lives
in different house now, and Tom can’t understand
why. Then his Teddy Bear tells him a story
charged topic of separation and devorce
approachable.even though it ends on a sweet
BRUNO HÄCHLER was born in
Zurich, Switzerland. He worked
for ten years as a music journalist
and has produced two CD’s
featuring children’s songs. He
has written numerous picture
his live performances continue
My teddy bear seems really sweet, but maybe I’ve been fooled. I wonder
what he does all day when I am off at school…
What child hasn’t wondered what her teddy bear really does all day while
she’s off at school? Well, this little girl is determined to find out. She spends a
whole day trying to catch him—she peeks, she spies, she even pretends to be
asleep… But he never moves an inch!
So she comes up with a plan that’s sure to catch him—leave out a jar of
honey!
What she sees is sure to surprise you. This is a delightful story for anyone
who’s ever wondered what their toys really do when no one’s home. The
rhyme is contagious, and will keep children laughing… and coming back for
more.
My teddy bear lies very still and waits for me at night. I climb in bed and
cuddle him and squeeze him really tight. I love my little teddy bear. He’s soft,
and cute, and sweet.
But when it’s dark and time for bed, he doesn’t want to sleep!
It may be bedtime, but this little girl’s teddy bear is having none of it.
He’d rather stay up late and play hide-and-seek,
build with blocks, or jump on the bed.
Every time Mom comes to see what the racket is,
the two of them just pretend to be asleep.
But when the girl finally slumbers, her teddy
bear stays awake to keep a vigilant watch
over her, protecting her from whatever
scary shadows may come her way.
By the time morning comes he’s
exhausted. No wonder you never
see teddy bears up during the day!
This witty verse presents a unique
and touching portrait of friendship
that children everywhere
can relate to.
Whenever Sophie’s parents go out, Sophie gets to stay with her grandmother.
But tonight was the night of the big dance that only happens once a year,
and Sophie desperately wants to go. Grandma explains that children are too
young to stay out so late, and grandmothers are too old. What is Sophie to
do?
Perhaps she can find a way to convince Grandma that dressing up in their
finest for a night out on the town is too important to skip. And when they get
there, perhaps they’ll meet someone special who makes the trip worth the
trouble...
This is a book that captures all the magic and excitement of a night out with
grown ups and how far imagination can take you.
Fia and Fabi are like any brother and sister —
they’re always fighting. “He has more than me!”
“That’s not true!”
Mama Fox has a solution: if Fia and Fabi can’t share their cookies,
she’ll eat them all herself. The incredulous siblings try to convince her
“that’s what all kids do,” and to prove it, they take her to visit other
families in the neighborhood. Sure enough, the Squirrel
children, the Bear children and even the Deer children
are arguing over who has more. No one seems
able to share.
No one, that is, until Fia and Fabi stumble
upon two Mice children who show them
that the only thing more fun than having
someone to fight with is having someone
to play with.
In this adorable story, Stephanie Roehe
takes a humorous look at sibling
rivalry, and makes a hard lesson easy
to swallow—cookies included!
Miko is wide awake and ready
to play, but Mom wants to sleep
longer. What can Miko do until
her alarm rings? Everything that
Miko tries to read, play, or eat is
one of Mom’s favorite things
too!
He doesn’t want her to miss out,
so what can he do to save them
for her, and pass the time until
she’s ready to join him?
MIKO “IT WAS ME, MOM!”
Miko wants to see how far his
new ball will bounce, but when
it bounces right into Mom’s
favorite vase, he knows he’s in
trouble. Should he hide it?
Should he make up a story?
None of those ideas seem right.
When Mom comes home, Miko
decides that maybe telling the
truth won’t be so bad after all.
MIKO NOBATH! NOWAY!
After Miko’s exciting day, the
last thing he wants to do is
wash away all the fun things he
did! Mom says he doesn’t have
to take a bath—
but then he will have to endure
tickly clothes, sticky ice cream
on his face, and sleeping on the
hard floor! How far will Miko go
to remember his special day?
MIKO DOUBLE BIRTHDAY!
It’s Miko’s birthday, and he’s as
excited as can be.
It’s also his friend Mimiki’s birthday,
but Miko is the only one
who got any presents. Miko
would like to share with him,
but it isn’t so easy to find something
Mimiki can play with too.
How can they have fun with the
toys together to make it the
best double birthday ever?
MIKO WANTS A DOG
Miko wants a pet dog more
than anything. His friend
Mimiki will pretend to be a dog
for a little while, but he won’t go
on a leash. There’s no doubt
about it — Miko needs a real
dog, but his Mom says he’ll
have to wait until he’s older.
He’s so disappointed, until he
hears barking from next door.
Could this be the perfect chance
to prove how good he can
be with a pet?
MIKO GOES ONVACATION
Miko and Mimiki are off to the
beach for a vacation.
But Mimiki can’t get wet, and
Miko doesn’t want to leave him
all alone when he goes swimming.
Maybe Mimiki can play
with another family —but will
Miko have the courage to
make a new friend?
MIKO WHERE IS MIMIKI?
Miko is upset.
His little friend Mimiki has disappeared!
Or could he just be hiding? Miko
searches everywhere,
but Mimiki is nowhere to be
found!
Can Miko ever find his friend,
and can Mom help make sure
that he never gets lost again?
On a lovely night in the city, five mice hear music in the distance.
What can this wonderful sound be? They follow the music and
find a fabulous frog concert in the park. But mice are not allowed!
Returning home, they decide to form an orchestra of their own.
They make their own instruments, practice, and finally put on
a fantastic show.
But when the applause dies down, they find there
are frogs in the audience. Music is to be
shared, so the five nice mice share the
stage and their music.
Here is an enchanting story
Fairies – Friends for Lifetime
CHRISTA UNZNER Born in 1958
in Berlin and studied
Advertising and Design at the
Fachhochschule in Berlin.
After 3 years working for an
advertising agency she decided
to dedicate her future
work to illustration, especially
for children’s books. Her books
have benn published in many
different languages.
SIMONE LINDNER was born in
Pegnitz, a small town in
Bavaria. She grew up idyllically
as a miller’s daughter and
since early childhood had a
close relationship to nature.
She discovered her artistic
talent during her schooltime.
Gradually she specialised in toy
design and development.
The four little fairies, Aelin, Tara, Runya, and Amar are
each deeply connected to one of the four elements:
water, air, fire, and earth. They have adventures, both
large and small, with their friends, while showing us the
wonders of nature. Through their stories and elements,
we learn to appreciate and respect nature, and to deal
with it wisely. Even when problems seem impossible to
solve, these little fairies use their strengths — and the
help of their friends — to save the day. They are fun,
clever, and enchanting. And who knows, maybe their
magic is real after all!
Marcus Herrenerger on his book:
A rat moves through the history of the 20th and
the beginning of the 21st centuries. In the first part
the rat leaves its accommodation in the Winter
Palace in Petrograd, is discovered by intruding
revolutionaries and ends the first part the journey
in the sewers of Vienna. The second part of story
begins in Casablanca, where the rat is a pet in
Rick’s Café Américain - and ends in Berlin, where
the third part begins. Here the rat belongs to a
punker in the Squatting scene of the 70s where a
rat is a not an unusual sight. The journey ends in
Kyoto, where after many stops, many meetings
and friendships the rat remains.
This trip is like a slice of history, of time and
culture spanning 90 years. It brushes
through certain periods, which are compressed
in certain places: the Petrograd of the Great
October Socialist Revolution, the artistic
Paris of the 20s and 30s, the swing era
of New York, the Europe of World War II and the
postwar period, Paris of the 50s with its
existentialists of authenticity and inauthenticity,
through Swinging London, the hippie era in the
U.S., the dramatic changes in Iran and
Afghanistan in the late 70s, the Squatting Scene in
Berlin and the "turning point" - the fall of the Berlin
Wall and the end of socialism in almost all
countries of Eastern Europe.
The whole thing is an attempt to draw history as
tradition,
as mediated memory and as remembered
perception corresponding to the three parts and
how in all views reality, truth and perception, are
not alwaysidentical.
Recommended for all who are interested in
history from unusual points of view!
The sky over Berlin in November often as gray as the fur of the rat and the city seems even stonier than in other seasons.
But in November 1989 the gray doesn’t matter to the Berliners at all. With the approaching end of East
Germany the Berlin Wall opens and the people flow into the western part of the city. The rat feels their excitement.
Many cry, others can not believe their luck, and some are afraid of what will come. But they all feel free, the artist
and the rat too, for now they can leave their "island" of West Berlin.
The rat is curious about what all these people are doing on the wall and what is on the other side. When the rat
finds out there is no turning back.
It smells different, the bits of leftover food taste different, the people do not care about the rat. No one? Yes,
This official catalogue showcases recent work by
81 of the finest established and emerging illustrators
of children’s literature. Along with the artwork
it also includes essential biographical information
on the featured artists, making this an ideal reference
work for everyone who appreciates contemporary
children’s book illustration.
According to the 2009 international panel of jurors,
the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition represents “a
selection that took place on an extraordinarily
democratic basis taking into consideration all the
acceptable options, views and visual art opinions
from the available information and materials. We
believe that we succeeded in choosing a sample
that represents the best of what has been done (or
not done) in the area of illustration (…) by participating
artists”.
