Voice, Piano<br />
Edward White, Jr. has been an instructor in voice and piano at<br />
LAAPA since July, <strong>2007</strong>. Edward holds two degrees in vocal performance,<br />
receiving his Master’s degree from the University <strong>of</strong> Texas at Austin in 1999<br />
and his Bachelor’s degree from the University <strong>of</strong> Alabama in 1996. He is<br />
currently completing work on his doctoral degree from the University <strong>of</strong> Kentucky.<br />
He lives in Mandeville with his wife, Kay, their daughter, Evelyn<br />
Claire, and their two cats, Kitty and Sammy.<br />

Katherine S. White has been an instructor in voice and piano at<br />
LAAPA since July, <strong>2007</strong>. Katherine will receive her Doctorate <strong>of</strong> Musical<br />
<strong>Arts</strong> degree in December <strong>of</strong> this year from the University <strong>of</strong> Kentucky, having<br />
obtained a Master’s degree in vocal performance (2001) from the University<br />
<strong>of</strong> Texas at Austin and a Bachelor’s degree (1999) from Northwestern State<br />
University in Natchitoches, LA. Originally from Luling, LA, she currently<br />
lives in Mandeville with her husband, Edward, their daughter, Evelyn Claire,<br />
and their two cats, Kitty and Sammy.<br />

Violin, Viola<br />
Kate Withrow began studying the violin at the age <strong>of</strong> five in Austin,<br />
Texas. She was first trained in the Suzuki Method and then progressed under<br />
the guidance <strong>of</strong> Leonard Posner, winning the 1999 Pearl Amster Young Artist<br />
Competition. She then continued her studies with Andrzej Grabiec at the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Houston and Mauricio Fuks at Indiana University. She performed<br />
in many festivals throughout the country and abroad including the<br />
Aspen Summer Music Festival, the Orford Centre for the <strong>Arts</strong> in Quebec, and<br />
the Mozarteum Sommerakademie in Austria. After the completion <strong>of</strong> a Performer’s<br />
Diploma at Indiana University, she was selected to be a regular<br />
member <strong>of</strong> the Chicago Civic Orchestra for the 2006-<strong>2007</strong> season. She now<br />
lives in New Orleans and plays in the <strong>Louisiana</strong> Philharmonic Orchestra.
Michael Smith<br />
Guitar<br />
Michael Smith has been an instructor with LAAPA since July <strong>of</strong><br />
2006 and has been an active member <strong>of</strong> the jazz community in New Orleans<br />
since 2003. As a jazz guitarist, Michael has had the opportunity to study and<br />
play with noted musicians including: Steve Masakowski, Frank Potenza,<br />
Brian Seeger, Matt Lemmler and Hank Mackie. In addition to performing<br />
weekly in New Orleans, Michael has had the opportunity to share the stage<br />
with jazz greats including pianist Arturo O'Farrell and guitarists Gene Bertoncinni<br />
and Dave Stryker.<br />

Steven Sweetwyne is a New Orleans native who began playing the<br />
alto saxophone in the St. Augustine marching band. As a senior, Steven was<br />
selected the Drum Major <strong>of</strong> the nationally ranked “Marching 100.” He studied<br />
jazz at NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative <strong>Arts</strong>). Steven’s passion<br />
for music also extended into the realm <strong>of</strong> music business, studio recording,<br />
and music composition. Steven holds a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Liberal <strong>Arts</strong>-Saxophone<br />
degree from Xavier University. He minored in music business at Loyola<br />
University <strong>of</strong> New Orleans, and attended Indiana University <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />
on a full graduate assistantship. There he received his Masters in Music Theory<br />
and Composition. Steven has been an instructor with LAAPA since September<br />
<strong>of</strong> 2006. He currently performs with the Troy Sawyer Band, as well<br />
as pursuing a second masters degree in Computer Science.<br />

Thanksgiving Holidays<br />
Russell Tucker, Associate Director, is a graduate <strong>of</strong> Southeastern<br />
<strong>Louisiana</strong> University and holds a degree in piano education. Mr. Tucker is an<br />
accomplished composer and a member <strong>of</strong> many local and national music organizations.<br />
Russell has been teaching at LAAPA’s River Ridge School <strong>of</strong><br />
Music for over 20 years and at Stuart Hall School for Boys for over 15 years.<br />

Marcus Ballard<br />
Winds, Brass, Piano, Percussion<br />
Dr. Marcus Ballard grew up in southern Arkansas. He received his<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music degree from Henderson State University and his Master <strong>of</strong><br />
Music and Doctor <strong>of</strong> Musical <strong>Arts</strong> from the University <strong>of</strong> Southern Mississippi.<br />
He has performed with many groups, including: Bernadette Peters, Bob<br />
Dorough, The Sinfonia Gulf Coast, The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, The<br />
Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra, and the Southern Mississippi Symphony<br />
Orchestra. He lectures at Southeastern <strong>Louisiana</strong> University, and teaches full<br />
time at LAAPA. While pr<strong>of</strong>icient in most instruments, he has a special passion<br />
for the Saxophone. His love <strong>of</strong> music is only rivaled by his dedication to<br />
teaching music.<br />
Clifford McPeek<br />
Brass, Winds, Guitar, Percussion<br />
Clifford McPeek was born into a big band family. His mother and<br />
father met in a Jazz Orchestra that played in Florida in the late 1950’s. She<br />
was the featured vocalist and his father was the band manager and bass trombonist.<br />
Little Clifford played in the Spirit <strong>of</strong> Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps,<br />
club bands and University Bands in the 1980’s and 90’s. From there he progressed<br />
to playing festivals and cruise ships as well as jobs for foreign dignitaries.<br />
Hosting filmmakers from Russia and traveling to Rome with parents<br />
and students to perform for Pope John Paul II in Vatican City were cultural<br />
hallmarks. Recent work in Mississippi and <strong>Louisiana</strong> schools has helped<br />
inspire music for students.<br />
Ryan Cullen<br />
Piano, Saxophone, Composition, Jazz Ensemble<br />
Ryan Cullen, Director, holds a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music degree in Jazz<br />
Studies from Loyola University <strong>of</strong> New Orleans and a Master <strong>of</strong> Music<br />
degree in Studio/Jazz Composition from the University <strong>of</strong> Miami. His<br />
compositions are published through Really Good Music, LLC., PDFJazz-<br />
Music.com in addition to RYCUN Music Company (rycunmusic.com).<br />
His works have been sold and/or performed in Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic,<br />
Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Spain,<br />
Sweden, the United Kingdom, and throughout the United States. Mr. Cullen<br />
is a member <strong>of</strong> numerous pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations including MENC<br />
and The American Society <strong>of</strong> Composers, Authors, and Publishers<br />
(ASCAP). Ryan is married to his lovely wife, Margaret; they are the proud<br />
parents <strong>of</strong> Patrick Alexander.<br />
David Mahoney<br />
Drums<br />
“David is a musician on the quest <strong>of</strong> exploring and presenting the<br />
many facets <strong>of</strong> jazz. He is a drummer who knows the role <strong>of</strong> the drums in a<br />
jazz band in the traditional sense, but is sensitive to the colors and textures he<br />
can get out <strong>of</strong> his instrument that makes for interesting listening.”<br />

David Reis<br />
Piano<br />
David received a Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music degree in piano performance<br />
from the University <strong>of</strong> Wisconsin-Madison as well as a Master <strong>of</strong> Music degree<br />
in piano performance from the University <strong>of</strong> Texas-Austin. His primary<br />
teachers were Carroll Chilton and David Renner. He has served as a staff<br />
accompanist for dancers, vocalists, and instrumentalists at the University <strong>of</strong><br />
New Orleans, Loyola University, and Tulane. He is also active as a solo artist,<br />
performing romantic and twentieth century classical piano repertoire as<br />
well as his own improvisational piano compositions which are rooted in the<br />
New Orleans piano styles <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Longhair and James Booker. He has<br />
also served as musical director and pianist for numerous musicals at the high<br />
school, college, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional level.<br />
Wendy Savarino<br />
Voice, Piano, Flute<br />
Mrs. Kinchen Savarino, a native <strong>of</strong> Pontchatoula, La, received her<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Music from Southeastern <strong>Louisiana</strong> University. She then received<br />
her Master <strong>of</strong> Music from Ohio State University. Previous opera and<br />
musical roles include: Belinda in Dido & Aeneas, Mrs. Nordstrom in Little<br />
Night Music, Naomi/step sister in Cendrillon and Mrs. Gobineau in The Medium.<br />
Wendy currently resides in River Ridge, La with her husband Tony<br />
and two cats.
