summer student A Summer Student’s Perspective of the College by ManYing Ho This past summer, I had a unique opportunity to work at the College as a summer student. My experience has left me with a deeper understanding of both the College’s regulatory function and its function of providing professional support for its members. I am very fortunate to have worked at the College at a time when our profession is undergoing many changes. Changes such as increased scope of practice for pharmacists, labour mobility, the regulation of pharmacy technicians and the introduction of new technology, all require modification to the current pharmacy Acts and Regulations in order to become operational. By attending the June council meeting and various committee meetings, I got to see first hand the process by which College staff support the work of elected Council members to determine how these changes can become incorporated into existing laws. I came to appreciate the accountability, transparency and hard work the College puts into these changes in order to ensure that they are the best for the profession and more importantly, in the best interest of the public. During my four months at the College, I also had the opportunity to work within different departments and as a result, I developed a better understanding of the mission and purpose of the College. I came to learn how each department fulfills certain objects of the College and I was inspired by the collaboration and team work that exists not only within each department but also among different departments. By having the opportunity to work in the various departments, I saw first hand how the 13 objects of the College are met and how the fulfillment of these objects allows the College to carry its mission of regulating the pharmacy profession. Overall, my summer experience has enhanced my understanding of the College. The College serves as an invaluable and easily accessible resource that provides professional and educational support to not only its members, but also to the public. While working in the registration department, I was impressed with the support and guidance the College provides to international pharmacy graduates. My time in the continuing competency and quality assurance departments showed me how practising pharmacists are supported in their professional development through programs such as the online self-assessment and the online learning portfolio. I also learned that practising pharmacists are supported by the College through site visits, which appear to be mutually educational experiences for both the pharmacy/pharmacists and the College. Finally, through my work in the investigations and resolutions department, I learned about the support and accountability provided to the public by the College. I look forward to the changes ahead for our profession as it continues to evolve. From my experience, I feel reassured that the College will be there to provide us with support and guidance.
