Winners at
Richmond
Theatre!!!
by James Giles
Any pupil or member of staff can nominate someone to win a Jack Petchey award. Awards are given to young
people who make ‘a wholehearted, unselfish, and dedicated contribution to their school.’
Winners of the Jack Petchey Achievement Award receive £250 to spend on the school. It is up to the winners how
they spend their money.
All winners of this prestigious award from 2012 to 2013 were invited to the annual Kingston and Richmond Jack
Petchey Award Ceremony to receive their boxed gold medallion.
All of the winners should be extremely proud of their award, and the outstanding contribution they give to the
school, and the school community.
Year 7’s Got Talent!!!
by Nicholas Winter, Edward Reid, Vishaol Vignaraja and Kishanthan Yogalingam
The Year 7 Talent Competition, held on 19th December
2013, was an event organised by Miss Pomeroy and Mr
Pellett, to finish the Year Seven Induction Program on a ‘high
note’!
The event was extremely enjoyable for the teachers and students alike. The teachers were laughing after many of the acts
and were utterly amazed by the talent shown by the Year Seven pupils who performed. All forms had to take part but other
singles and groups did it of their own accord.
We spoke with Kishanthan, who performed ‘My Heart Skips a Beat’ by Olly Murs at the competition, and achieved second
place! He was amazed and proud of his accomplishment.
On introducing the judges, Mr Pellett said “We searched high and low for judges with particular experience in this field…
Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any!!!” – The Judges were Mrs Morris, Assistant Headteacher, Miss O Reilly, Head of Drama
and Miss Cockar, House Co-Ordinator.
Individual Winners
1st – George Harvey 2nd – Kishanthan Yogalingam 3rd – Isadmehr Jamal-Poor
As a tutor group, 7Stephenson won, with their piece dedicated to Mr Sagoo.
Year 7 Football Tournament
by Edward Reid and James Giles
Macmillan Cancer Support believes think “no one should
face cancer alone.” The Shooting Star-CHASE Hospice help
terminally ill children around London and in the South East
also.
The Year 7 Football Tournament held last term raised funds
for these two charities. Through the initial process of tutor
groups ‘bidding’ in assembly for the top football players in
the year, to playing football and organising refreshment
stalls, the Year Seven fundraiser was a success, with monies being split between Shooting Star-CHASE and Macmillan
Cancer Support.
Well Done to all who participated, and fundraised for these two very worthy charities.
The Year 9 Football Team won in the semi-final of the
National Open Cup with an emphatic 5-0 win to setup a
mouth watering final against Christleton High School from
Chester. In a close first half, Liam Miller finished off an
exquisite team goal with a low driven shot from the edge of
the box to put Coombe 1-0 going in at half-time.
Coombe started the second half playing at an exceptional
tempo, which Bishop Challoner failed to cope with and two
quick fire goals from Cameron Thompson and Liam Miller
putting Coombe 3-0 up and looking very comfortable.
Year Nine National Cup Success!
based on article from www.coombeboysschool.org
This took away any hope from Bishop Challoner and
Coombe tasted blood as the boys continued to pour
forwards in numbers. A delicious in swinging cross from Liam
Miller and pressure from Ryan Sessegnon forced an own
goal to go 4-0 up and a composed finish from Liam Miller meant the game ended 5-0 as the unstoppable Coombe Boys stormed
their way into the final.
It is a phenomenal achievement to reach the final of a national cup, which any school in the country can enter and the boys can, and
should be very proud of themselves.
Kingston Borough Shares the Love on Valentine’s Day
Guest Editorial: Love Kingston Day
by Dawn Salisbury
People across the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames are coming together on Valentine's Day in a unique fundraising appeal.
"Love Kingston Day" is happening on Friday 14 February and is bringing together residents, schools, colleges, businesses, shops,
restaurants, pubs, banks, choirs and gyms who will be doing lots of different activities to raise money for vital local causes.
They will all be helping to change the lives of thousands of local residents including homeless people, abused women, families without
a meal on the table or in financial hardship, and troubled teenagers.
Half of all donations to Love Kingston go to The Kingston Legacy Fund – with 50% match funding. The other half directly supports
five local projects who all work on ‘Pathways Out of Poverty’; Hestia, Kingston Foodbank, Kingston Churches Action on
Homelessness, Kingston Savers and Oxygen.
For more information and to download a fundraising pack visit www.love-kingston.org.uk
BHS - Love Kingston activities throughout the store
Kingstonfeet - Donations from treatments on LK Day
Kingston Voluntary Action - Volunteer Collections & Yoga Class
among many more... including Coombe Boys’ School!
On Friday 14th February, Love Kingston Day, Coombe Boys’ are holding a mufti day. To take part and
wear mufti you need to bring in £1 to school on Friday, which goes to support charities in the borough,
listed on the previous page.
After all the fundraising events and donations throughout 2013 over £90,000 was pledged to the Love
Kingston fund and is already making a difference to local charities and the lives of the people they support
across the borough of Kingston upon Thames. We’ve got some big and bold plans for Love Kingston Day
2014 to raise £100,000 just on the day alone.
Singing at St James’, New Malden
Do YOU have a passion for Choral Singing? For centuries, our country’s cathedrals and larger parish churches have been renowned
for their tradition of choral music, and our choir shares in this tradition.
The choir is an affiliated Guild Choir of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM). We train our choristers using the RSCM Voice for
Life scheme which covers all the skills and other attributes required both to contribute and to derive the most from being a member of
a choir. Our choristers also partake in RSCM courses, services and other regional events, and some are members of RSCM Voices
(South) – one of the RSCM’s flagship choirs which performs music of the highest quality in important venues around the country.
Each individual is trained to become an accomplished performer, and their natural musicianship is given every opportunity and
encouragement to develop.
Why Join? Choral singing calls on a whole variety of skills and attributes such as musicality,
listening, performing, vocal control, literacy, numeracy, memory, concentration, courage, selfawareness,
blend, rhythm, physical stamina, orientation, comprehension. All these and other
characteristics are exercised and developed as a result of singing challenging and varied
music. These life skills stay with a person forever.
We are always on the lookout for promising new recruits, and hope to hear
from you soon!
