EMR Adopts
Bandvulc
Policy
European Metal Recycling Ltd (EMR), a global leader in
recycled metal products and environmental services,
has selected Bandvulc and Fulda tyres as policy
fitment for its southern UK based fleet operations.
Adam Wilkes, Transport Manager for EMR‘s Southern Region
comments, “We have run extensive tests and trials with a variety
of tyre brands at a selection of our operating centres and found
the Bandvulc package to be the most cost effective solution
for our business both in regards to up front costs and final
PPK rates. We believe in simplicity so chose not to run casing
banks or value management of assets. The Bandvulc offer was
straightforward and uncomplicated and hence, more attractive”.
The agreement sees Bandvulc supplying mainly to EMR’s current
network of service providers, therefore maintaining continuity.
“It is important to us that we retain the high service levels
provided by most of our current local SPs, some of them have
been dealing with EMR for a long time and have earned our
loyalty. Bandvulc’s offer was unique in that it allowed for this
requirement,” Adam adds.
EMR’s southern fleet of circa 200 vehicles and trailers operates
from 20 locations, collecting ferrous and non ferrous metals
from industry and construction / demolition, and end-of-life
vehicles / consumer scrap producers throughout the southern
part of the UK.
The Bandvulc BIG tyre has proven to be successful in this
arduous application and is the specified brand for drive and
trailer axles. The Fulda tyre complements the package by
offering a competitively priced new tyre brand which is available
via EMR’s service provider network.
BANDVULC TYRES
EXPANDS WITH TESCO
Bandvulc Tyres and Bandvulc Tyre Contracts
(BTC) have added the Tesco Republic of Ireland
operations to its already established UK activity.
The arrangement sees the ROI fleet adopting the UK’s tyre
policy and is a ‘mirror’ of the process which has been so
successful for Tesco. BTC will manage the contract in full
and it will also utilise the 24/7/365 call centre facility, the Tyre
Support Unit which is one of only two tyre telephone support
units in the UK to be manned by their own fully trained staff.
All others are generic help desks used by a number of other
manufacturers.
Bandvulc now has a firm rooting across the Irish Sea and it
intends to expand its services to all of its clients which operate
in the UK and have distribution in the Republic of Ireland.
Alongside developments with Tesco’s ROI fleet, agreements
with Tesco and Tesco Fuels’s UK
operations are set to continue
following recent
contract
reviews.
CONFIDENCE in a CLIMATE of CHANGE

Our Customers
Yuill & Dodds
Yuill & Dodds Ltd, one of the leading haulage
specialists in Scotland has chosen Bandvulc
Tyre Contracts to manage its diverse fleet of
over one hundred vehicles ranging from long
distance articulated units to rugged off-road
eight wheel vehicles.
The operation will be supported by BTC’s 24/7/365 Tyre
independence allows it to select from a number of service
provider options, providing the best possible coverage and
response times across the UK, including Scotland.
“We operate vehicles throughout the UK, carrying a variety
of loads, making Y&D a very versatile and successful
company.” comments Brian Yuill, Managing Director of Yuill
& Dodds. “Therefore it is very important to us that our
suppliers, especially in an area such as tyres, show the
same versatility and dedication. We are confident that BTC
will be able to provide the tyre management solutions a
varied fleet like ours requires and are looking forward to
working with them.”
The agreement also sees Bandvulc’s drive and trailer axle tyres
them.”
BDY3: Designed for high mileage,
hard working operations
Fraikin Extends
The Bandvulc product range has been strengthened by a new
addition – the BDY3, part of a new range of tyres for Bandvulc
in the specialist construction sector. Acknowledging that this
range will be used in some arduous conditions the compound
has been formulated especially to withstand aggressive hard
working applications where tear resilience is an essential prerequisite.
This aggressive directional
pattern offers a large
21.5mm tread depth
providing exceptional grip
on all surface conditions
and is proven to deliver
mileage benefits when the
environment permits.
The BDY3’s rugged
shoulders minimise
operational damage and,
combined with Bandvulc’s
bespoke compound, offers
outstanding reliability
whatever the challenge.
Fraikin is a leading provider of commercial vehicle fleet services
in the UK, with nearly 16,000 vehicles under its management.
Fraikin’s success has earned a long list of major clients, from
food manufacturers to paper merchants, as well as high-tech
logistics companies and parcel carriers.
Fraikin have been using the Bandvulc product on its fleet for
many years and have recently extended their agreement with
Bandvulc for another 3 years.
“Fraikin are a 100% customer focused organisation” comments
Alistair Wood, Procurement Director for Fraikin. “We rely on our
suppliers to deliver quality products on time to meet the needs
of our customers and Bandvulc have continued to prove their
commitment to us over the years.” Bandvulc tyres are policy
fitments for all trailers and drive axles across the Fraikin fleet.

IT’S ‘ALL GREEK’
TO BANDVULC
Our Customers
Bandvulc Expands into Greece
Hot weather, blue skies, warm sea and good food is
what you think about when Greece is mentioned.
But Bandvulc had other plans when it visited Greece
as part of its growth plans for Europe. Bandvulc has
established a distribution arrangement with Agripan
SA who will be marketing the Bandvulc truck tyre
products in Greece. Like Bandvulc, Agripan is a long
standing, family run business.
Based in Athens, Agripan have great experience in
developing exciting and innovative products. Greece
has a very arduous environment with summer
temperatures exceeding 40°C and with the tough
local conditions it will be a great test of the Bandvulc
product. The launch of the brand took place in
September with over 60 tyre dealers meeting in
Thessaloniki and 60 truck fleet owners in Drama, close
to the Turkish / Bulgarian border.
Both companies are looking forward to a long and
successful partnership and what a beautiful country
and culture to develop this relationship.
‘BIG D’ WORKS FOR CSG
Award winning waste management specialist Cleansing
Service Group is one of the UK waste industry’s fastest
growing companies. It operates in a wide variety of waste
sectors and runs one of the UK’s biggest waste haulage
fleets. The Fareham-based company’s blue chip customer
base includes leading supermarket groups, multinational
forecourt chains, local authorities and utility companies,
and it is the UK leader in the servicing of off-mains domestic
drainage systems.
Ensuring the company’s fleet of vehicles is maintained to
the highest standards lies in the hands of fleet engineering
manager Mick Arnold. He comments: “For some months
we have been fitting Bandvulc tyres to a number of our
vehicles and the ‘BIG D’ tyre is proving to be a good choice,
particularly when used on vehicles going to landfill sites.
An important bonus is the environmental benefit by fitting
retreads rather than newly manufactured tyres.”
CSG also use Bandvulc Tyre Contracts and its tyre support unit
to provide coverage 24/7 in partnership with Barry Shaddick
Tyres with whom they have the main service agreement.
Philip West, Group Commercial Director for Bandvulc adds,
“As an environmental waste management company CSG’s
decision to use retreaded tyres further endorses their green
credentials. The tests they have carried out demonstrate that
this sustainable option delivers on quality and performance”.

NEW PARTNERSHIP
WITH
The Bandvulc Group has entered into
a new arrangement which sees it
becoming the leading stockist of the
Fulda range of commercial tyres in
the Great Britain. Covering sizes from
17.5” to 22.5”, Bandvulc has become the
wholesaler for the Fulda Truck brand and
distributes alongside its own products
and the agreed small order Goodyear/
Dunlop arrangements.
Pictured above: (standing) Dave Hurrell, Distribution Manager
for Bandvulc Tyres, with the Bandvulc Telesales team.
The Fulda brand is one of the leading European brands and is wholly owned by the
Goodyear operation. This agreement enables Bandvulc and BTC to compete in the new
tyre market sector in both wholesale and regional fleet business. Philip West, Commercial
Director, Bandvulc comments: “By having control over distribution of a new tyre brand we
will be able to manage policy fitments very effectively and at the same time offer our dealer
network a competitively priced tyre product which fits a niche in the market”.
Winners of the Carbon Reduction Category in
the 2009 DEBI Environmental Business Awards
In November 2009 Bandvulc
won the DEBI Carbon
Reduction category, sponsored
by Envision, in recognition of:
• Good environmental practices.
• Encouraging wider interest in the
adoption of best environmental
practice
• Promoting the development of
novel solutions to environmental
problems.
Overall DEBI Awards winner in 2006
Bandvulc has continued to significantly
build on its early success and has put
carbon reduction at the forefront of
its strategy. It has focused on those
remaining areas of the business that are
the biggest source of carbon emissions.
Using the same approach of
measurement, analysis and action it has
achieved substantial and measurable
reduction in the use of diesel in its
HGV fleet. Not content with this, it
has developed its own low rolling
resistance tyre; focused on logistics to
reduce distribution mileage; invested in
operational improvements to minimise
Employee gets top marks
Nationwide on City & Guilds course
In September 2008 eight Bandvulc employees commenced
the City & Guilds Part 1 Retread Process Workshop Practice.
The course involved weekly in-house tuition and a significant
amount of self study covering all 12 sections of the syllabus.
The course ran until April 2009 and included all areas within the
retread process from initial inspection to final inspection, quality,
health & safety and rubber technology. Following is a list of the
successful candidates:
Participants in these courses, which Bandvulc has run for the last 15
years, include employees from all areas of the company. As well as
classroom tuition time is also spent on factory floor where they get
‘hands on’ experience in activities such as patch repairing a tyre.
They also gain a greater understanding of damaged tyres, reasons
for removal and load and speed ratings, to name but a few. Even
those not directly involved in the retreading process benefit greatly
from the course. For example, staff in Bandvulc Tyre Contracts
find the knowledge they acquire about narratives and terminology
enables them to converse more fully with service providers.
Development
Tyre Inspection Re-engineered
for World Class Manufacturing
Bandvulc has once again shown the retread
industry how to change the face of retreading
with innovation, quality and efficiency by
in-house design and engineering.
Building on its reengineering of tyre repairs, known
as Camelot, Bandvulc has now changed the way it
handles over 18,000 truck tyre casings per month
and has named this new process Avalon, another
reference to King Arthur.
As with the Avalon of King Arthur, where Excalibur was
forged, the Avalon of Bandvulc remains somewhat
of a mystery. Using in-house engineers and expertise
along with expansion of its production bar code
system called Merlin, little is known of Avalon.
Designed, manufactured and installed using internal
expertise the investment of £300,000 has gone a lot
further than it would have if outside consultants and
engineers were used, an important benefit in today’s
economic climate. Following numerous strategy
meetings the final design meets all the internal
requirements by removing all non-value added
activities. Another important benefit is improved
customer care enabling Bandvulc to provide the best
inspection and quickest reporting on truck tyre casings
in the industry.
The installation of a new bead to bead shearography
machine ensures product quality starts right at the
beginning of the process and enables reduced inprocess
scrap plus the ability to report further on
casing related faults.
Patrick O’Connell says; “It is a great credit to all
involved that such major advances in manufacturing
can be made by using those people within your
own organisation. We look forward to showing our
customers the step change we have made in the
retreading world. I am now convinced that Bandvulc
leads the way in retreading technology.”
When asked about what was next and what it is going
to be called Patrick O’Connell replies; “We do not have
a name yet but we do have a vision for our end of line
inspection to be re-engineered to push for the ultimate
in lean manufacturing within any retread plant”.
Bandvulc - Miles Greener
Political and public environmental pressure is placing
ever increasing demands on businesses to reduce their
energy usage, review their waste/recycling practices
and to be more vigilant on how their activities impact
the environment.
The important contribution retreading tyres makes both
economically and environmentally in reducing life cycle cost
and removing worn tyres from the waste stream cannot be
over-emphasised. As a front runner in the UK truck retread
industry, Bandvulc offers an environmentally sustainable tyre
solution, from production to disposal providing significant
cost and CO2 savings for the end user. Moreover extensive,
in-house research and development of rubber compounds and
tyre designs, technically advanced machinery and processes
combined with stringent quality controls ensure tyres are
manufactured to the highest standards of performance.
Bandvulc retreads conform to ECE Regulation 109 which
means that performance, dimensions and markings are equal
to those of a new tyre.
Details On Rubber Waste and How It Is Recycled After
Leaving Bandvulc
Following tyre replacements to a customer’s fleet, all of the
removed tyres are returned to Bandvulc to be inspected.
For more information visit: www.bandvulc.com/environment
Accepted Casings
Every tyre which is accepted through the initial
inspection will generate 7kg of rubber waste when it
is buffed down and begins the retreading process.
The buffi ng dust generated is collected
by rubber crumb processor
The rubber crumb is then sold on for
the following uses:
Products
e.g. pencil
cases
Rejected Casings
Tyres which are rejected during processing or casings
that fail initial inspection are scrapped, with the
rubber compound being removed and reused
whenever possible.
Scrap tyres are collected and delivered
to tyre granulation company
The scrap tyres are then crumbed and
used for the following:
Bandvulc’s Energy
Efficiency Programme
Prior to the start of the
programme total emissions
from our direct production
process were in the region
of 3,077,560kg CO2 per year
(electricity and natural gas).
Through measuring, monitoring
and managing we have made
significant savings. Today
this is saving an estimated
394,820kg CO2 per year, an
improvement of 12.9% prior
to the start of these projects
- equivalent to the electricity
of 222 houses or the total
emissions of 60 houses per year
of operation.
For every recycled tyre produced
Bandvulc Tyres will save:
• 68 litres of oil
• 44 kilogrammes of rubber
compound
• 182.25kg of CO2
This equates to approximately
11 million litres of oil and 7
million kilogrammes of rubber
compoumd saved annually.
Based on average weekly production of
3,500 tyres moulded over 48 weeks

BTC
10 Years On
It is with great pride and pleasure that Bandvulc
Tyre Contracts will be celebrating its first
decade of operation in July 2010. From small
beginnings it has evolved into an industry
leading service providing tailor-made solutions
for a diverse range of fleets and organisations.
• BTC’s TSU provides tyre breakdown call out
assistance for some 74 commercial fleets.
• Average call response time of 65 minutes.
• Number of calls now handled per week = 6700
BTC started in 2000 with just one contract, today:
• It manages some 100,000 commercial vehicles covering 77
contracts
• 65% of all supermarket deliveries are made on Bandvulc
tyres using BTC.
• It has a network of service providers covering the UK.
• Bespoke online software and full Disaster Recovery solution.
Part of the BTC success story is an ability to listen and provide
customers with solutions to meet their exacting requirements
and operational complexities. But it doesn’t stop there, these
are further enhanced and developed, ensuring value added
benefits along the way. This ethos is why the Bandvulc Group
is pleased to be a long term sponsor of the Motor Transport
Partnership Awards.
UK-Wide Partner Network
Leads the Way
In 2009 Bandvulc Tyre Contracts introduced
its leading network of tyre suppliers to the
road transport industry. This network has
evolved following a rigorous selection process
which involved every aspect of the suppliers’
operations.
Tremendous growth, especially in the last five years where the
number of contracts has increased by almost 200%, shows that
BTC is delivering and exceeding customer expectations.
Its mantra of ‘Service is remembered long after everything
else is forgotten’ has helped to secure this exponential
growth and its high standing within the industry. Renowned
for providing bespoke, customer focused, innovative and
pioneering solutions, BTC’s green credentials enables
customers to reduce their carbon footprint whilst achieving
measurable time/cost savings.
sake! We had always planned
to have the highest standards
possible and to encourage
development and improvement
within the new network, this I
believe we have achieved”.
Kevin McPherson, BTC Manager for the Bandvulc Group
comments; “We have been targeting such a development for
quite a while now. By having our own network and working
to a uniform standard for BTC, we are able to offer a sense
of belonging to our partners. All too often we hear of other
network partnerships but in all probability we are one of
the largest operators within this sector and yet had no real
identity. I’m pleased to say that this has changed positively.”
The project saw 21 key service providers supply all of the
necessary pre-requisite documents and evidence of procedures
in order that BTC could award levels of performance in key
service areas.
James Stranex, Sales Operations Manager for the Group adds;
“What we didn’t want was to carry out an audit for audit’s
The successful agents form a network which covers the whole
of the UK and provides a firm platform from which to deliver
quality service levels to BTC’s customer portfolio.
The process is ongoing and it is likely that additional members
may join in the future. In the meantime BTC continues to
enjoy successful growth and it is these successes that make
the partner programme attractive and dynamic.
Philip West, Commercial Director for the Bandvulc Group
Two teams, six members, one mission
– to beat each other in the
Bristol Rat Race 2009
Keeping with the “nothing is impossible” motto of Bandvulc,
Patrick O’Connell and five other crazy “volunteers“ entered two
teams: The Hi Speed Humpers and The Rolling Resistance team.
Prior to Rat Day both teams undertook a great deal of training
together, which in itself was very competitive.
What is a Rat Race? The Rat Race is an urban adventure
challenge event that turns cities into high-adrenaline adventure
playgrounds for participants of all abilities. Teams of three and
pairs hike, bike, abseil, climb, kayak and navigate their way around
the streets, structures, waterways and urban landscapes of the
country’s coolest cities. It is about 50km on a bike, 8km running
and 2km in a canoe.
Hi Speed Humpers
Rolling Resistance Team
How did they do? High Speed Humpers were 59 out of 128,
scored 650 out of 1000 and were 4th out of male only teams.
Rolling Resistance were 103 out of 128 scoring 520 points out of
1000 and came 12th out of the 17 mixed teams.
A small but determined group of cyclists from Bandvulc have
been exploring the local area over the last 12 months. The
Bandvulc Bike Club (BBC) has been across Dartmoor both on and
off the road, over all sorts of terrain and in all kinds of weather.
Back in the saddle for 2010 plans are to venture further afield.
Transaid Week
As ever, the annual ‘Transaid Week’
involved the obligatory intake of extra
calories - all in a good cause. Some
200+ Cornish pasties and Devon Cream Teas were consumed
by willing participants around the company. Various supervisors
and helpers distributed the goodies encouraged by the offer of
a bottle of bubbly for those raising the most funds. A total of
£271.95 was raised from all who gave generously and ate heartily.
Plans are already underway for this year’s Transaid week which
runs from the 5th to the 9th July. www.transaid.org.uk
Plymouth Truck Show
June 2009 saw Plymouth’s first Truck Show take place on The
Hoe. Some 100 vehicles entered the competition and Bandvulc
sponsored the Best Rigid Vehicle; the winner of this class was
Mathew Brenson who drives for D. J Wills, Looe.
ENVIRONMENTAL
MANAGEMENT
The event was held in aid of Muscular Dystrophy and just over
£3,000 was raised. Bandvulc displayed 2 of its special livery
HGVs to spread the environmental message and helped raise
funds by collecting donations for various giveaways. This year’s
event will be held on Sunday 6th June on Plymouth Hoe in aid
of Mercy Ships. Two of Bandvulc’s directors, Richard and Ryan
O’Connell, have been requested to judge the whole event after
stepping in at the 11th hour last year. More information about
the charity can be found on www.mercyships.org.uk
