<strong>Welcome</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>spring</strong> <strong>2013</strong> <strong>semester</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Queensborough</strong> Community College’s<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> Continuing Education and Workforce Development<br />

This welcome comes <strong>to</strong> you at a time our community is recuperating from <strong>the</strong> effects<br />

<strong>of</strong> Hurricane Sandy. Our thoughts and support are with you and we hope that by<br />

<strong>the</strong> time this catalogue arrives at your door, you, your family, and friends are safe and<br />

warm. We are pleased <strong>to</strong> announce that our <strong>spring</strong> term will resume regular scheduling<br />

and <strong>of</strong>fer many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enriching programs you have come <strong>to</strong> enjoy.<br />

Our pr<strong>of</strong>essional development certificate programs in business, healthcare, medical<br />

billing, interior design and various o<strong>the</strong>r fields continue <strong>the</strong>ir series <strong>of</strong> classes in<strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>spring</strong>. We look forward <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fering an OSHA Certification programs for construction<br />

workers and <strong>the</strong>ir supervisors as well as a Patient Care Technician certificate program.<br />

To assist our English language learners with workplace skills, we are introducing an<br />

ABC Seminar Series for Non-Native Speakers: Academic Skills, Business Skills, and<br />

Communication Skills.<br />

Our new personal enrichment classes include a literature class called Twilight Zone<br />

and fine arts classes, Impressionists, and <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> Antique Res<strong>to</strong>ration. The His<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

Seminar series includes: The 1950’s - American Culture in Mid-Century, Churchill &<br />

Leadership, and; Vicksburg-Gettysburg 1863 - Two Battles that Saved <strong>the</strong> Union. Fusion<br />

Yoga and a new Salsa Dance class are being introduced, and Ballroom Dancing returns<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> dance floor!<br />

For our kids and teens, we are introducing Painting Around <strong>the</strong> World, Programming<br />

for Artists, Learn <strong>to</strong> Speak Art, and BodySmart. Our teens will benefit from a new<br />

collaborative partnership between our college Physics department and <strong>the</strong> Future<br />

Teacher’s Society.<br />

In addition, if you are looking for a new career in healthcare, <strong>the</strong>re are still some slots<br />

left in our training and placement CareerPATH grant program. Please contact Judith<br />

Designed for new business owners, bookkeepers, and those individuals prospectively<br />

An ER Tech provides technical support <strong>to</strong> MDs and RNs <strong>to</strong> optimize patient care. The ER Tech<br />

GED Preparation for Adults: High School Equivalency Diploma<br />

TESTING & PLACEMENT for ALL GED STUDENTS: Monday, February 11th at 6-10 pm<br />

Registrants must take <strong>the</strong> Placement Test on February 11th <strong>to</strong> determine <strong>the</strong>ir readiness for a<br />

GED course. Students will ei<strong>the</strong>r be placed in<strong>to</strong> a Pre-GED or GED level class based on <strong>the</strong><br />

The Pre-GED course prepares students with <strong>the</strong> basic skills needed <strong>to</strong> qualify for <strong>the</strong> GED<br />

Caroline Coppola, M.S. Ed. TESOL, has been teaching all aspects <strong>of</strong> ESL <strong>to</strong> college students and<br />

adults for over 20 years. She is on <strong>the</strong> QCC staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP)<br />

Stephen B. Horowitz, Esq. specializes in legal, business, and new media communications as well as<br />

ESL. He lived in Japan for 3.5 years during which time he worked for two Japanese law firms, studied<br />

Basic Rider Mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle Course – $350<br />

This Basic Rider Course (BRC) was developed by <strong>the</strong> Mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle Safety<br />

Foundation (MSF) as a complete riding program for <strong>the</strong> beginner rider.<br />

Learn about <strong>the</strong> different types <strong>of</strong> mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles and how <strong>the</strong>y operate, what <strong>to</strong> wear for comfort<br />

and protection, how <strong>to</strong> develop a riding strategy for dealing with traffic and road hazards, and <strong>the</strong><br />

effect <strong>of</strong> alcohol and o<strong>the</strong>r drugs on your ability <strong>to</strong> ride safely. The BRC’s riding exercises cover<br />

straight-line riding, shifting, braking, cornering and swerving techniques and mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle dynamics.<br />

Trama’s Au<strong>to</strong> School Inc. provides mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles, helmets, eye protection and course materials.<br />

You need <strong>to</strong> provide your own riding gear: sturdy, low-heeled over-<strong>the</strong>-ankle footwear, jacket,<br />

long pants, full-fingered gloves, and, if necessary, raingear.<br />

Prerequisite: You must be at least 16 years <strong>of</strong> age <strong>to</strong> participate. Participants under <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 18<br />

will be required <strong>to</strong> have <strong>the</strong>ir parent or guardian’s notarized signature on <strong>the</strong>ir application. The<br />

Why should I consider taking <strong>the</strong> test prep<br />

The Regents are a battery <strong>of</strong> exams that New<br />

• The tuition fees listed for each continuing education<br />

course. Any additional materials fees indicated<br />

<strong>the</strong> first class meeting. A one-time $15 per person<br />

registration fee is required each <strong>semester</strong>.<br />

• Matriculated QCC students in full-time credit<br />

COPE<br />

College Opportunity <strong>to</strong> Prepare for Employment/C.O.P.E. in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> Human<br />

Resources Administration (HRA) provides <strong>Queensborough</strong> Community College students<br />

receiving Public Assistance <strong>the</strong> support services <strong>the</strong>y need for <strong>the</strong>ir college career.<br />

C.O.P.E.’s goal is <strong>to</strong> help students become successful college graduates and find long-term<br />

economic self-sufficiency and independence through gainful employment.<br />

For academic advisement, career counseling, job placement (full and part-time), resume<br />

preparation assistance, interview preparation—including free new and fashionable clothing<br />

and accessories (in conjunction with Edith’s Place and Dress for Success) and a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r services for those students receiving “P.A.”<br />
