<strong>Belize</strong><br />

There was a time when <strong>Belize</strong> was known as British Honduras.<br />

<strong>Belize</strong> is the only English speak<strong>in</strong>g country <strong>in</strong> South America. In<br />

the early 1800’s <strong>Belize</strong> was a part of British Common Wealth.<br />

There was a long-stand<strong>in</strong>g conflict with Guatemala, which<br />

claimed that <strong>Belize</strong> belonged to them. <strong>Belize</strong> became an<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependent nation with the help of United Nations and Brita<strong>in</strong><br />

on September 21, 1981. Diverse customs and traditions <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>Belize</strong> are because of people of different cultures liv<strong>in</strong>g there.


History of <strong>Belize</strong><br />

• History of <strong>Belize</strong> goes as far back as Mayan civilization.<br />

Approximately 30 percent population of <strong>Belize</strong> consists of<br />

Creoloes who are the descendants of Europeans and slaves.


Mayan Civilization<br />

• Mayan civilization flourished <strong>in</strong> Central America as long as<br />

thousand years ago. Most of the Mayan population <strong>in</strong> <strong>Belize</strong><br />

immigrated dur<strong>in</strong>g the 1800. Mayan’s make up about 13% of<br />

the population of <strong>Belize</strong>. Customs and traditions of <strong>Belize</strong><br />

have a strong <strong>in</strong>fluence of Mayans.


Mesitoz<br />

• 40% of the population <strong>in</strong> <strong>Belize</strong> is made up of Mesitoz who<br />

migrated to this country from Yucatan <strong>in</strong> 1800 dur<strong>in</strong>g the Caste<br />

Wars. At home, they tend to speak Spanish but outside its<br />

English, they speak. Visitors and locals love Mestizo food.<br />

Garuf<strong>in</strong>a<br />

• The Garifuna populations who live mostly along Southern Coast also<br />

make up a large section of the population. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to government<br />

records, they make up around 7% of the population. Garifunas immigrated<br />

to <strong>Belize</strong> <strong>in</strong> the early 1800s, they are the descendants of Indians and slaves.<br />

They live <strong>in</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>ct communities and tend to speak their own language.<br />

They celebrate Garifuna Settlement day on 19 th November of each year.


Mennnites<br />

• Mennonites who are orig<strong>in</strong>ally from Mexico, Mennonites are<br />

one of the most recent immigrants to <strong>Belize</strong> they came to<br />

<strong>Belize</strong> <strong>in</strong> the 1960s and developed their communities on the<br />

lands of Cayo districts and Orange Walk. These very tightly<br />

knit communities who supply most of the agricultural<br />

products <strong>in</strong> <strong>Belize</strong>. Mennonites are also poplar <strong>for</strong> their<br />

construction and furniture skills. In addition to Mennonites,<br />

Arab and Ch<strong>in</strong>ese communities are also located <strong>in</strong> San Jose.<br />

All of which makes <strong>Belize</strong> a very <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and a beautiful<br />

place, and adds a lot of spice to its already diverse culture.
