President’s Column
Gerade Aus!
By Joe Carastro
Looking at the schedule, it is clear that we are off to a running
start for 2006! Upcoming highlights include Bob Campbell’s “All Euro
Show” in Long Beach the end of February, and the “California Festival
of Speed” at the end of March. Bob Bassett is spearheading our
volunteer effort for the latter event, and the Santa Barbara Region
will receive a share of the profits based on our participation. We will
be having a Memorial Drive in Bud’s memory following the March
Camarillo Breakfast that will visit sites associated with Bud and the
Region. We will be finishing the drive at Rusnak Porsche in Westlake,
who will be providing lunch.
We had two Caymans at the Camarillo Breakfast in February,
and at least one potential owner got a test drive. Expect to see more
and more of the friendly “crocodilians” at future club events. Also
at the breakfast, yours truly reminded the attendees that we are a
volunteer organization, and that 10 minutes a year/person helping
with gate duties goes a long way to preventing this chore from
falling on the shoulders of a relatively few. Also as long as I have this
vein going, I’m still looking for a team to head up the Fall Concourse
event (drop me a note).
At the last Board meeting, we had a protracted discussion
concerning the funding of Der Auspuff past the August publication.
As advertising currently covers less than half of the costs, the shortfall
has been coming out of our other sources of income and reserves.
The Board will be exploring our alternatives; however, we hope that
the currently undefined will of the membership prevails in making
our final decision. If you have an opinion, comment or concern,
now is the time to voice it! Please do not hesitate to contact the
Editor, Mike Harley, or myself by e-mail, snail mail, phone or tossing
a biscuit at us at a breakfast
Registration for the Porsche Parade in Portland is right around
the corner. The full info will be in PANORAMA so don’t let yourself
fall behind the power curve.
Porschelly yours,
Thank You
Dear SBR Members,
I want to thank everyone for your expressions of sympathy,
the phone calls, e-mails and cards were wonderful, during
the recent weeks since my husband, Bud Ewbank, passed
away. It is only with friends such as all of you are that make
the hours and days more bearable.
I hope to see you soon at an event.
Sincerely,
Editor’s Column
German Engineering
and the Future of Der Auspuff
By Michael C. Harley
Last week, while driving along at 140+ mph, I started thinking about
German engineering. My imagination didn’t have to travel far, as I was
in fact flying down the Autobahn just south of Frankfurt in a rented
Mercedes E-Class. Sadly, with snow flurries hitting my windshield, most
every Porsche was tucked safely (and warmly) in garages – I think I saw
but one 911 on the Autobahn during my entire stay!
Driving the Autobahn gives you wonderful insight into the
engineering and technical savvy behind our German cars. When we
“push” our Porsches at barely 50% of their potential speed (or less)
down our domestic freeways, we are hardly requiring our vehicles
to sweat. Brakes, suspension, steering, and chassis are all working in
harmony hoping the “weakest link” (ahem…the human operator) keeps
everything paint side up with the wheels on the pavement.
Not saying that they don’t have a place on our streets, but consider
for a moment I didn’t see a single Lincoln Navigator, GMC Suburban, or
Ford Expedition on the Autobahn – or in Germany, for that matter. At
one point on the Autobahn, I was passed by a Chrysler Crossfire SRT-
6. Not faulting American engineering, but twenty kilometers up the
road, he was crashed into the guardrail - no injuries, thankfully! (That
particular Chrysler is more Daimler-Benz under the skin than your
average domestic hulk, but I wasn’t passed by anything from the States
on the Autobahn all day long.) I love German Engineering.
Der Auspuff is the most visible offering the Santa Barbara Region of
the PCA gives to each member. At a cost of about $2.75 per issue, per
member, it is also the most expensive (even after advertising revenue
is factored).
With thick glossy paper, a beautiful color cover, and professional
graphics, the award-winning Der Auspuff has become a top-quality
publication. However, on strictly financial terms, we could save
thousands each month if we started printing a black & white “newsletter”
once again…
So, what value do you put on Der Auspuff? Do you like the current
format? Do you collect the issues, or are they thrown away with the
newspaper? Do you let friends or other potential club members read
them?
We are about to make some very big decisions about
the future of Der Auspuff. We don’t want to make any
decisions in a vacuum - please let us know what you think.
Please send an e-mail to Auspuff@schnellauto.com
Monthly Board Meeting
Minutes from February 1, 2006
The Board of Directors held the February 1st meeting at Bob and Jeanette
Bassett’s home. Present were Barry & Valerie Weinstein, Bob & Jeanette Bassett,
Pamuela & Mike Hodson, Gary Gasperino, Lynn Kuchera, Mike Harley, Joe Carastro,
Steve Lutz, Bob Holzinger, Martin & Ankie Jansen, George & Mary Barrett, James
Oldham, and Mike & Karen Turek. The meeting was called to order at 7:30pm.
Secretary:
Karen read the minutes of the January
meeting. Minutes were approved as read.
Treasurer:
All is transitioning well. The taxes for the
board of equalization are expected to show
up in the next month.
Membership:
Jeanette stated that the National data comes
out on the 3rd of each month; therefore, we
do not have Jan. figures. We ended last year
with 627 members officially. Six applications
for membership were received in January.
Jeanette sent an e-mail to those who did not
renew in 2005 with varied responses. At the
Feb. 4 breakfast meeting, an announcement
will be made to solicit help at each breakfast
for sign-ins, etc.
Editor:
Mike stated that the February issue was held
back 10 days to include Bud’s memorial. The
issue is at the printer today and will be done
tomorrow. In the “Join the PCA” section,
he will solicit more members to contribute
articles.
Advertising:
Lynn has another $1,050.00 to give to the
Treasurer. All advertisers have paid except
for two. Advertising monies add up to
$14,000.00 in income.
Rally:
April 22 will be the rally school. April 29 will
be the rally.
Goodie Store:
The Goodie Store has been doing well - no
new products to discuss at this time.
Autocross:
Bob Holzinger is calling different venues to
accommodate our autocross. Details such as
equipment and volunteers were discussed.
It was decided that a committee needs to be
formed to plan this event. Tentatively the
autocross is scheduled for May 13; however,
that could change depending on the venue.
Concours:
Joe stated that we are seeking a volunteer to
head the concours in September.
Activities:
Barry & Valerie reported that the February
Palm Restaurant event is almost full now.
March 4 will be the Bud Ewbank Memorial
Run. March 18 will be our Malibu Fun Run.
The Bassetts will host their 10th annual chili
cookoff this year. For the May 20 progressive
dinner, all host homes have already
volunteered.
Meetings/Events:
Gary stated that a committee for the New
Member picnic is being formed. Many
volunteers will be needed. There will be a
General Membership meeting in September.
Archives:
Doing well. Pamuela Hodson needs a bio for
new board members and is always looking for
items for the scrapbook.
President:
Joe said that we need volunteers for the
Festival of Speed to be held March 24-26. This
is a Zone 8 event and Bob Bassett will head
up a list of volunteers.
Old Business:
Gary presented one and all with a transition
plan for our Der Auspuff. Their committee
met and came up with several ideas to raise
monies and/or make changes to fit our
budget. A motion was made to approve the
budget of $3130.00 per month which was
seconded and approved. The committee will
meet to re-evaluate this issue in July.
New Business:
New stationary has been printed with the
current board information.
Meeting adjourned at 9:45pm.
Respectfully Submitted
Camarillo Breakfast Meeting
Generations of 911 parked on the lawn
February 4th, 2006 – It was cold, foggy,
overcast and a little drizzly in spots when we
pulled out of our driveway on the way to the
breakfast meeting.
Cars began dribbling in to the Way Point
parking area at the Camarillo airport around
8:00 AM. For the first 45 minutes or so, it looked
like we wouldn’t be seeing much more than
an average number of people and Porsches
attending. I told Valerie, “…looks to me like
the weather is going to keep the numbers way
down today.”
Was I ever mistaken! By 9:30 AM, we had
clear skies and 150 members and guests in
91 Porsches! They were eating, visiting, and
looking over the array of beautiful Porsches.
Everyone was having a great time getting
together, and socializing, with each other.
It seems that practically each month the
participation gets larger and larger.
First time members included Raul Cardenos,
from Santa Barbara, in his 1984 Porsche 911
Carrera. Mark Armstrong and Heather Johnson
(transferees from the L.A. Region) arrived
in their 2006 Porsche 997 Carrera S. Mike
and Jasmine Maneker, from Simi Valley, also
brought their 1999 Porsche Boxster.
We also had a few prospective members
look us over that day. Bob Crystal, and his
father Harry, from Oxnard, arrived in an 1983
Porsche 911 SC. Conny and Heidi Klintare, of
Thousand Oaks, showed up in a 1958 Porsche
356 Cabriolet. We look forward to you folks
dropping the ”prospective” adjective and
becoming members of our PCA/SBR.
Nine guests joined us at the breakfast
tables. They were Peter Adanalian, from the
Grand Prix Region, in his 2001 Porsche Boxster
S. Greg Moser, Gary Moser’s son, and his
Photos by Michael and Patrick Harley
girlfriend, Jennifer Mullins, also dropped by
to eat and enjoy the “car show.” Roger and Dee
Fish came all the way from England (guests
of Bill Wilkinson). Our Ex-Vice President, Kent
Bodin, brought Paul
Molnar, from Ventura. Paul
has a 1989 Porsche 930.
Glenn Bronner and Tonya
Cassidy, friends of Val’s
and mine, arrived from
Camarillo. This was Glenn’s
second breakfast with us in
two months. I think I smell
a Porsche in his future.
Welcome to all of you!
It truly was the club’s
pleasure to have you join us for breakfast.
Please make this a habit and join us each
month. It is a fun way to begin your weekend.
I want to mention the two gorgeous brandnew
Porsche Caymans gracing the Breakfast
parking area for the first time. The first was
bright red, a new acquisition of John and
Jeanne McNair of Thousand Oaks. Bill Wilson,
from Simi Valley, showed up in a sparkling
silver Cayman.
President Joe Carastro opened the business
end of the Breakfast by asking for volunteers
to help with the gate at the airport. He
91 Porsches and 150 members and guests showed up!
suggested if everyone in the club worked only
ten minutes a year at the airport gate, it would
be more than enough to keep it staffed and
give the people who have been devoting their
time to it (particularly Chris Hodson) a much
needed break. For the majority of the time,
Chris is at the gate greeting people and letting
them off the airport grounds when they leave.
If you would be willing to help, please contact
Joe, or any of the Board members, and we’ll be
glad to pass the information on.
Shortly thereafter, I took the microphone
and talked about the upcoming events. The
Scenic Back Roads ride to the Palm Restaurant
has already “Sold Out” and Valerie has begun
taking names on a waiting list, in the event
anyone cancelled. With the explosive growth
of our club, many of these activities fill up
early. Those who would like to be part of a
specific event should make a point of signing
up early.
Next month, we have two driving events.
The first will be right after our Saturday
Camarillo Breakfast meeting. This will be a
Memorial run to honor the memory of Bud
Ewbank. Then, on March 18th,Gary and Phyllis
Weaver have planned a “Fun Run through the
Members admire Bill Wilson’s silver Cayman S
Malibu Hills” over the twisties, switchbacks,
and winding roads of the Malibu Mountains.
David Barr then got up and talked about the
“Classics for Charity XII” car show on April 9th.
The 13th annual Classics for Charity Car Show
is sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Beverly Hills
and the Beverly Hills Education Foundation.
Its main purpose is to benefit Beverly Hills
Schools. Anyone who would like to register
online can go to www.bhbenz.com.
Bob Bassett took the microphone to tell
us about the Zone 8 Festival of Speed, to be
held at the California Speedway, in Fontana
on March 24th through March 26th. They
are looking for volunteer help. There are lots
of jobs available. Anyone willing to work a
minimum of 3 hours at the speedway will be
given free admission and a tee shirt. For more
information call Bob at (805) 388-2195 or email
him at: ca.bassetts@adelphia.net.
Santa Barbara Breakfast Meeting
February 11, 2006 - When I awoke on
Saturday, it was cold, drizzly, and foggy outside.
I went into the garage, put the top up on the
Boxster (something I rarely do) and took off to
Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara. During most
of the ride, the weather remained the same.
Not expecting a huge turnout…imagine our
surprise when we pulled into the parking lot
in front of the Harbor Restaurant and saw that
practically every parking space overlooking
the bay, as well as a number of them on the
other side were filled with Porsches!
By the time all the cars and attendees were
counted, we were hosting 65 people in 36
Porsches. This was one of the largest turnouts
ever in Santa Barbara.
The Harbor Restaurant did a good job of
serving us in a timely manner. However, John
Scott, the owner, said he will put on more
servers next time to keep up with the demand
Classic Porsche, beautiful setting
of our wonderfully popular breakfasts.
Even if you don’t live near Santa Barbara,
breakfast at Stearns Wharf is a wonderful
destination for a morning drive. A number
of us start out our weekends this way, on the
second Saturday of each month, enjoying the
excellent food and the great camaraderie. Try
it. You’ll like it.
First time Santa Barbara breakfast attendees
included Mike Maneker, from Simi Valley, in
his 1999 Porsche Boxster, and Jon and Anna
Chung and their father, Jon, from Ventura.
They arrived in a 1999 Porsche Carrera 2. Two
prospective members sat down with us for
breakfast. The first was Lew Udell of Ventura.
A Near-Record Crowd Enjoys the Pier
Words by Barry and Valerie Weinstein
Lew has a 1982 Porsche 911 SC. Next to him
was John Reyn, in his white 1991 Porsche 964
C2. John is in the Navy, stationed in San Diego
on the USS Peleliu.
We also had two interesting guest
attendees. Dominic and Joy Stroud, from
Dallas, Texas, dropped in for our breakfast.
They are members of the PCA Dallas Region.
They told us they come to Santa Barbara often
and just happened to see a Texas size herd of
Porsches pulling onto the pier. The Strouds
drive a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT!
Our President, Joe Carastro welcomed
everyone to the breakfast. Joe asked that
members provide input to the Board of
Directors as to what suggestions they might
have towards dealing with the deficit our
very fine newsletter, Der Auspuff, is running.
Anyone who has a thought about this
problem, please contact the Board of Directors
with your ideas.
Goodie store manager, Mike Hodson,
talked about the merchandise he had on hand
and offered us those very special, high quality
PCA/SBR Porsche calendars for nearly 50% off
the regular prices. If there are any left, grab
one from the Goodie Store. Each year, Kent
Bodin puts together a great looking calendar
featuring the beautiful cars of our members.
Carol Mathieu showed us the “new member”
badges we will be handing out to people
joining our club so they can be more easily
identified by our current membership (the
Laird’s had the badges made up for us). Special
thanks to Debra and Gary for a job very well
done. If you see anyone wearing these new
badges, please take some time to welcome
them, talk to them, and perhaps offer them
a seat at your table. Let’s make all the new
members feel welcomed and comfortable
right from the beginning.
I spoke about our upcoming events. With
the growth of the club, it is getting more
and more difficult to find venues that can
accommodate the large groups that want
to attend the various events. Case in
point: We are oversubscribed to the Palms
Restaurant this month. We can only take 70
people in at one time and over ninety are
going on the drive. (Those who are on the
waiting list will enjoy the drive but plan to go
to eat at other restaurants, in the area, when
we arrive in Carpenteria.) I strongly urge you
to sign up for the events as soon as they are
announced if you would like to attend them in
their entirety.
This May, we will have our annual
Progressive Dinner, where we eat various
courses at different member’s homes and
enjoy the entrée at a restaurant. Last year a
number of people had to be put on a waiting
list and ultimately were not able to go. This
year, with the large numbers who always
register for the event, the same thing is bound
to happen. So once again, sign up and send
your money in early and get to enjoy this very
popular annual event.
On this same note, Joe Schneider got up
and warned us to keep a sharp eye out for the
registration forms for the Porsche Parade, to be
held in Oregon this year (March 10th is the first
sign up day). Admission to the parade always
sells out quickly. If you do want to attend,
go to pca.org on the Internet and sign up
immediately. There will also be a Zone 8 tour
going up to Portland, to benefit the Food Bank
of Portland, of which you are invited to join.
With breakfast over, those who had the
time went over to Santa Barbara Porsche to
test drive the new Caymans in stock. Four of
us, Kent Bodin, Mike Turek, Dave Mosseson,
and me took off for Paso Robles to scout out
hotels, wineries, routes and restaurants to
begin making arrangements for an event
next September where we will be visiting the
James Dean Memorial site in Cholame. More
information on that activity later in the year.
RUF Report
“Retired and Unemployed Folks”
Lunch in Ojai
By Nicolas Liakas
Photos by Mike Turek
SBR’s new committee for Retired and Unemployed Folks (RUF) met
on February 15, 2006, for the second meeting since its inception earlier
this year. Thirteen individuals, in seven Porsches and two alternate
vehicles, gathered at The Deer Lodge in Ojai for a festive lunch that
followed a beautiful drive through Ventura County.
The day started at 11 a.m. when most of the participants arrived at
the staging area, the McDonald’s parking lot on Santa Rosa Road in
Camarillo. The group traveled north on Santa Rosa Road to Moorpark
Road and then connected in Moorpark with Highway 26. That road took
the travelers to Fillmore via Grimes Canyon, a twisty and gorgeous road
with exceptional views of nearby mountains and agricultural fields.
(While still in Moorpark, RUF’s members witnessed and navigated
new roads being constructed in conjunction with massive residential
developments straddling High Street just north of New Los Angeles
Avenue.) At the junction of Highway 126, the parade of Porsches headed
west to Santa Paula where Highway 150 would meander into Ojai.
Along the latter route, several detours were encountered where road
repairs are still under way to remedy damage from 2005 rainstorms.
Nonetheless, the drive was very enjoyable as the procession marveled
at the scenic wonders of this region.
Bruce and Jeannette Clemens participated in their yellow Porsche
356 which they have owned for 28 years. Joining them were Bob and
Jeannette Bassett, Andy Gault, Will Hoag, Nicolas Liakas, Larry Stoops,
Mike Turek, Chester and Joan Yabitsu and Bob and Shirley Yount.
The Deer Lodge, located a couple of miles north of Ojai on Highway
33, was prepared for the group’s arrival and had the patio reserved
exclusively for the gathering. A “specialty de la maison” is venison, and
several of the guests feasted on venison soup or sandwiches. Others
were not as “game,” so they ordered the typical salads and burgers.
The two attending waitresses added their own eye appeal to the
presentation of the menu items.
Plans were discussed for the March 15 meeting of the committee.
The destination will be the Arroyo Hondo land reserve by Gaviota
State Beach in Santa Barbara County. The attendees will be treated
to a docent hosted history tour and gentle hike into the cayon, and a
picnic lunch will follow. If you are interested in joining the group, please
contact Nicolas Liakas at 818/999-1600 x 203 (office), or 818/706-6016
(home), or by e-mail at Nicolas@impress1.com.
Roadtrip: 356 Gets a New
Engine, Part II
I had never driven the ’59 more than about
30 or 40 miles on any particular day. My daily
driver is my Boxster which is fast, stops on a
dime and very comfortable. When you don’t
drive an older car regularly, the sounds and feel
are strange and can be alarming at times. Kent
assured me that the car was running great…
my confidence grew because I know that Kent
is attuned to these cars, especially the ’59. We
probably averaged 70 mph heading north in
light traffic on Interstate 5.
I thought that the biggest obstacle would
be the dreaded Grapevine. Small car, 60
horsepower, steep grade…no sweat, slow and
Bill Coghlan and Duane Spencer with the new powerplant
steady; over the Tejon Summit and down the
backside towards Bakersfield at a reasonable
pace. The weather was cool and perfect for aircooled
Porsches.
A couple of times on the trip north, Kent
spotted some photo opportunities. We’d
get off the freeway and set the car up for a
shot with a spectacular background. As we
approached the northern limits of Sacramento
the sun was starting to set and it was dark as
we approached Redding.
We awoke early on Saturday and found
the car blanketed with ice. Ice. Not frost that
could be knocked off with the wipers. We took
out credit cards (somewhere I picked up this
tip but never used it until that morning) and
scraped the windows. Remember the starter
My other car is a Porsche... also
By Bill Coghlan
problem? Well, we ended up push starting
the car and were on our way. On the way up
to Duane’s, Kent had me pull off the freeway
towards Shasta Lake where we took some
great photos with the mountains, clouds and
Lake in the background. I am one of those
people who typically drive from point A to
point B with very few stops unless dictated by
an empty tank or nature calling.
We arrived at Duane’s around 8AM and he
was ready. We drove past his 904 and 911 as
he backed out his 356B Coupe to allow mine
to take its place. He lowered the garage door
to keep the heat inside and we introduced
ourselves and spent a little time getting
acquainted. I spent more than a little time
mesmerized by the Porsche memorabilia
and racing photos on his workshop walls.
The racing photos included those of his red
356B Roadster that he successfully raced at
Willow Springs, Santa Barbara, Riverside, etc...
The actual car was sitting in his workshop
completely restored looking like a million.
My car was then put onto jack stands and he
began the removal process of disconnecting
the electrical, fuel and transaxle connections.
The engine was unbolted and lowered by floor
jack and wheeled aside for later shipment via
truck to Westlake. The new engine was sitting
on blocks looking beautiful.
In an attempt to let him work, Kent and I
borrowed Duane’s truck and headed for the
local watering hole/breakfast joint called
“The Bass Hole” and took in the special five
thousand calorie breakfast and purchased the
souvenir mugs. Tourists.
When we returned to the garage, Duane
informed me that I could “fool around with
the starter while he had the engine out.” Kent
sized up my abilities to address the starter
issues and volunteered to test and possibly
change out the starter/solenoid. He rolled
under the car on a creeper armed with the
testing instrument, a very large screwdriver.
As he tried the traditional test of arching the
connectors, the screwdriver jammed on the
contacts and he was showered with sparks.
Fortunately I was able to disconnect the battery
before anything really got out of control. Scary
episode in retrospect and please note that for
his heroism, Kent has been upgraded to superfriend.
Duane decided that it might be better
for him to lend us a starter for the trip home.
The new engine was rolled over to the
car and installed in about 30 minutes. It had
already been bench tested for an hour and
after the connections were made, it was fired
up, tweaked and lowered to the ground.
Duane backed it out of the garage and turned
it over to me for the initial test drive. Wow.
Fast. A quick trip down the road, a U-turn and
I was back beaming with satisfaction. Kent
took it next and did a lap of the neighborhood
returning with the same look of all of the
planets being in alignment.
We said our good-byes to Duane and
headed down the hill as the sun was setting.
We spent the night in Stockton and early
Sunday morning we were back on the road
heading home. As the miles added up, we
were able to increase the RPMs and speed
– Interstate 5 was still lightly traveled so it was
a beautiful day for the long drive home.
Twelve-hundred miles round trip. The
adventure was awesome and the fun of now
driving this old car with enough horsepower
to go up hills, pass with confidence, etc., is
wonderful. I received the old engine from
Duane and have it stored in the garage in case
the next steward of this car wants a matching
numbers car. Duane Spencer has a book
called the 356 Performance Handbook…my
car is now the poster car for that book. I will
never have a concours car but I will now be
out driving this car on a regular basis which is
what I enjoy most about having the old cars.
Enjoy your Porsche and Keep the Faith.
The Last
Air-Cooled 911
Photos and Words by Michael C. Harley
When Porsche began cooling the flat-6 with water in
1999, the 993’s place in history was set – it was to be
the last air-cooled production Porsche 911.
It was late 1994 when Porsche introduced
the Type-993, the successor to the Type-964
which had been in production since 1990.
More than just a cosmetic upgrade over the
previous body style, the improvements to the
993 Carrera were exciting, and extensive.
On the outside, the front headlights swept
back to cheat the wind (much like those found
on the exotic Porsche 959), the bumpers
were new, and the fenders flared even more
dramatically. The interior boasted more
luggage space, new seats, and a new steering
wheel among other niceties.
Under the skin, the air-cooled 3.6-liter flat-6
had been massaged to 270 horsepower. Two
transmissions, a Porsche-designed manual 6-
speed, or a new automatic “Tiptronic S” were
offered. (Porsche had developed the Tiptronic
S in conjunction with ZF and Bosch. ZF
supplied the gearbox and Bosch the electronic
control.)
With plenty of torque off the line, the
manual transmission was good for blasts to 60
mph in less than five seconds. Holding the gas
pedal to the floor, the sleek body (with a drag
coefficient of .33, it was actually less sleek than
the Type 964) could be pushed to 168 mph.
Featured in this issue is a beautiful 1995
Carrera Coupe in Aventurine Green – though it
does look almost black on the cover – owned
by Santa Barbara Region member Brent Elam.
1995 was the first year of the 993, and the
only year the car wasn’t OBD-II (this is critical
for many aftermarket tuners). Though mostly
stock, upgrades to Brent’s vehicle include
the 18-inch polished “Turbo Twist” wheels,
custom leather (green piping on tan leather),
sport exhaust, and an upgraded performance
engine management chip. The transmission is
Tiptronic S.
Though Porsche boasted the manual control
on their Tiptronic was “performance oriented”
– it isn’t as fast as the manual transmission
counterpart. Compared to modern computercontrolled
7-speed automatics, or current
lightning-fast SMG transmissions, this one feels
downright archaic. Many feel a Porsche with
an automatic transmission is a compromise,
and the 4-speed unit bolted in front of the flat-
6 drives that point home. It’s best to keep the
car out of “D” (leave the car in “3”) and let the
engine work a bit harder. Gas mileage suffers,
but the fun quotient is tripled.
Transmissions aside, nothing can ruin the
fun of driving a 993. As the engine sound
permeates the cabin with the familiar Carrera
wail (water-cooling on the latter Type-996
actually made the engine quieter), the refined
multi-arm rear suspension makes carving
canyons a joy. Pronounced directional
changes can be had with just a flick of the
wrist. Handling is balanced, and brakes (Big
Reds on Brent’s car) are impressive.
With ice-cold air-conditioning, airbags, antilock
brakes, and enhanced ergonomics (not
perfect, just better), the 993 is comfortable,
and safe. Add the reliability offered by the
bullet-proof flat-6, and the 993 becomes an
ideal “daily driver” for many.
Maybe it’s the fact it’s the last of the aircooled
911s. Maybe it’s the fact the exterior
design looks nearly as fresh today as it did
a decade ago. Maybe it’s the blistering
performance… Whatever the case, the 993
enjoys a near-cult following among Porsche
enthusiasts, and a very strong resale value
reflects this.
The 993 is arguably one of the best
Porsches ever made - the ultimate refinement
of the 911 chassis. It’s very fast, extremely
nimble, incredibly reliable… and, best of all,
air-cooled.
Goodie Store Report
March 2006
Everyone PLEASE keep your fingers
crossed for warmer weather!
By Mike and Pamuela Hodson
Goodie
Store
Everyone PLEASE keep your fingers crossed
for warmer weather!
January and February have been quite
cold, at least according to Southern California
(sissy) standards. Anything under 50 F. is cold,
especially when you are riding a motorcycle
to work. Under 40 F. is just plain cruel, as layer
upon layer doesn’t come close to achieving
the optimal comfort zone. Pamuela, of course,
feels very sorry for me; the words “stupid
macho” are uttered a bit too voce and not
quite enough soto.
Any members that need more help
keeping warm should visit the Goodie Store
for sweatshirts, hats, and the ever popular
Varsity Jacket. The Varsity Jacket is leather and
wool, with the Porsche logo on the front, and
Porsche script across the back. The jackets are
available via Porsche dealers or Performance
Products.
Bring your jacket to the Goodie Store for
embroidery. We can do your choice of the
Santa Barbara Region logo or the PCA National
logo, plus your name if so desired. Stop by our
booth at the breakfasts, or events, to see what
the Varsity Jacket looks like, as well as to get
an idea of the proper size. Nothing will keep
you warmer or look more stylish on those brisk
Saturday morning breakfast meetings!
March should be another fun
month for events, starting with
the “Bud Run” on March 4th.
Come out and show
your appreciation
and support for
the late Bud
Ewbank, who
with his lovely
wife Carolyn,
are in a big way
responsible for
the Porsche
Club that
Santa Barbara Region members enjoy today.
The Festival of Speed is a personal favorite
of mine. Last year was about the most fun
someone could have in twelve hours! The
event includes Porsche racing, viewing
fabulous pits, and excellent opportunities
to meet professional drivers. Let’s not forget
Porsche goodie bargains galore, insider racing
perspective, PCA people…what more could
you ask for?
Anyone interested in helping please contact
Carolyn Ewbank, Bob Bassett, or myself for
further details. It will be a day you will never
regret or forget.
We look forward to seeing you all at an
upcoming event, and thank you all for your
participation.
Brake Fluid
The hidden hygroscopic chemical
Photos and Words by Michael C. Harley
Chances are many of you have never seen
brake fluid. Short of a brake system failure,
unless you’ve replaced or bled your system
yourself, brake fluid is about the only fluid you
shouldn’t ever see dripping on the ground.
Most manufacturers recommend replacing
your brake fluid every other year, and it’s easy
to see why if you understand the chemical.
Every Porsche on the road today (actually,
nearly every single vehicle on the road today)
operates with a hydraulic brake system. These
brakes systems are relatively simple in design,
reliable, and very effective at what they do.
The “blood” of the brake system is brake
fluid. Mechanical physics teaches us liquids
cannot be compressed, and they also
transfer pressure uniformly along surface
areas. Therefore, fluid is the ideal medium
for equally transferring mechanical forces
from the brake pedal to mechanical forces on
each of the remote brake calipers. The system
works perfectly…until you introduce heat or
moisture.
When a brake caliper clamps down on a
spinning brake rotor, the kinetic energy from
the automobile is immediately transferred to
the cast iron rotor in the form of heat – lots of
it. Under race conditions, a cold rotor can glow
red hot within seconds. Thankfully, most of us
don’t torture our brakes that much. However,
most of us have stopped quickly enough
to raise rotor temperatures to very high
temperatures. That heat immediately soaks
into the rotors, calipers, hubs, bearings, and
even the wheels. Since the calipers are filled
with brake fluid, that heat is transferred into
the liquid raising fluid temperatures nearly
immediately.
Brake fluid is non-corrosive, and is specially
formulated to not boil until it hits very high
temperatures – some are engineered to handle
nearly 500 F. However, the brake fluid found
in nearly all passenger cars is hygroscopic
(meaning it readily absorbs water).
In very cool operating conditions, filling
the brake system with water wouldn’t be
a problem (if one could control corrosion).
However, when water boils (at only 212 F.) it
becomes steam – a compressible gas. Once
compression is introduced into the hydraulic
brake system, brakes become squishy or soft
(“fade” in automotive lingo) and stopping
distances increase – at best. Worst case, you
lose all ability to brake!
Though your brake system on your Porsche
is sealed, outside air loaded with humidity does
eventually work its way into the system. After
time, the hygroscopic brake fluid will absorb
moisture (which has the potential to boil into
steam) which could render your brakes much
less effective. The longer the period between
brake fluid flushes, the greater the possibility
of water in your brake lines.
The simple solution to this dilemma is to
replace your brake fluid every other year with
fresh fluid. Most systems hold less than a quart,
and the fluid is relatively inexpensive (the
most expensive fluid you will find at your local
auto parts shop won’t run you more than $15).
If you’ve got basic mechanical knowledge, you
can even do it yourself in less than two hours!
Besides the obvious hydraulic/pressure
advantages to fresh brake fluid, new brake
fluid keeps your entire brake system, from the
calipers all the way to the master cylinder, in
excellent working condition (I’ve seen brakes
that have gone years without a flush with
corroded calipers and brake lines filled with
gunk – an expensive repair).
Next time you celebrate your Porsche’s
birthday, think about doing a bit of preventative
maintenance on the brake system and give
your fluid a flush!
Have you tried rallying before?
Did you ever run a rally and say to your partner, “Man that was a challenge”? Did you enjoy the
scenery but not the tricks? A couple of years ago, Zone 8 began offering a “tour course” to see if
it will attract additional people to rallying. The Z8 rallies prior to this year’s Porsche Parade in
Portland, Oregon will offer this tour opportunity: a chance for you to practice staying on time
without the challenge of course following.
Is rallying something you’d always thought you’d like to try? Did you know that a rally is a
punctuality contest run on paved public roads? It is not a race. A team composed of a driver and
a navigator are required for each entry. Many regions within Zone 8 host an approved Time-
Speed-Distance rally -- checked out by our Zone 8 rally chairman, Revere Jones. In 2006, Santa
Barbara Region will host such an event on April 29. One week before that (Saturday, April 22)
we will offer a rally school. The format will be: a 2 hour classroom session followed by a short (45
minute) practice rally. Rallying skills, like many endeavors, improve with practice. The class will
be held at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 4575 Auhay Drive in Santa Barbara. Directions
will be provided to those who indicate an interest. You must pre-register. A copy of the Z8 Rally
Rules will be provided before the event to those who pre-register for study. The class will be
limited to the first fifteen cars that sign up. Pre-registration deadline: April 15 th (that should be
easy to remember?) The class will run from 10:00 to noon followed by the practice rally.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn. The roads around our region are as good as they get.
We have access to better roads and scenery than many Parade locations. We also have
members who have been around rallying for more than thirty years who would like to help you
learn some of the nuances. To those who are interested, come give it a try.
To pre-register or for additional information, please call Joe Boucher at 805-931-0990.
Registration document is available at: http:// www.schnellauto.com/auspuff/2006rallyflyer.pdf
SBR stands out at
Zone 8 Awards Banquet
January 14th, a night to remember.
2005, a year to be proud of.
By Kent Bodin
The annual Zone 8 awards banquet was held
January 14th at the beautiful Lake San Marcos
Resort near San Diego. This was the evening to
acknowledge all the accomplishments of our
Zone and its individual regions. The hostess of
the evening was our Zone 8 Representative,
Beverly Giffin.
Porsche Cars North America representative,
Terry Wells, told us of the record setting sales
of Porsche automobiles in 2005. In fact, he
noted that if Zone 8 were a separate country,
we would have been the fourth largest market
for Porsche that year, beating countries such
as France and Switzerland!
The new Zone 8 Region of the Year Award,
following up SBR’s win last year, was the
Orange County Region. An Orange County
member also received the Enthusiast Member
of the Year Award. He was my fellow dinner
table guest, Vince Knauf, and received a
beautiful Porsche jacket with that inscription.
Congratulations to Orange County Region!
Later, I was proud to hear that our own Bob
Holzinger won his class F1 in the Autocross
Series. He will receive a beautiful plaque with
a mounted photo of his 911T race car (as can
be seen in our region’s 2006 club calendar for
the month of May).
Also winning honors in the 2005 Autocross
Series were Class Champions, Mike Furnish in
class IS, and Steve Lutz in class AI.
Joe Boucher, along with his partner, Tom
Gould, won the yearly award, again, for Best
Rallyist.
A special award that evening went to
our own Carolyn Ewbank for all of the 2005
volunteer work she had done for SBR, Zone 8,
and National. And, she still has the continuing
responsibility of being our PCA national
membership chairman in 2006. A fitting
tribute was also given to her late husband, Bud
Ewbank. Photos of both Ewbanks were shown
across a large screen. A standing ovation was
given to Carolyn as the recipient of the 2005
Special Recognition Award.
Throughout the evening, a silent auction
was held to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation. Although I bid on four
unique items, including a photograph signed
by both drivers of the new American Le Mans
P2 Porsche factory race car, the RS Spyder
(which I saw win its first race at Laguna Seca in
October), I walked away empty handed. In the
end, the foundation received almost $4,000
from our Zone 8’s members’ generosity.
