Welcome Back!
class of
2012
I
t's hard to believe, isn't it? As you read this, the school year
is already off and running, and our students are rapidly
settling into their junior year. This is a busy year, with attention
beginning to focus more seriously on the journey beyond
New Trier. Our students will be spending some time this year
assessing their skills, determining their interests, and
exploring their options for life after high school. We hope
that your child will take some time to have fun, to try something
new, and to celebrate the many accomplishments of the
class of 2012 thus far.
There are a number of events coming up soon for
class of 2012 parents to note. The following is a
quick list and description of those approaching
(see sidebar calendars for more details.)
Remember to consult the New Trier website, class
of 2012 page, for updated programs during the
school year.
"Junior Year: Mission Possible" is the fall parent
program for the Class of 2012. What makes
junior year different at New Trier? How can you
smooth the way for your student and you through
the junior theme, the start of pre-college testing,
the timetable for the post-high school planning
process, etc.? A panel of New Trier experts will
address these issues and your questions. This is
the only school program for parents of juniors at
the start of the school year. Presented by the
NTPA Class of 2012 board; all parents are encouraged to
attend. The program is not intended for students.
Saturday,10/16
PSAT

Parents' Association Annual Homecoming Tailgate: Stop
by the Parents' Association tent just south of the football field
on September 24 from 7 p.m. through the first quarter for a
bite to eat before the game! It's a great way to see your
friends and cheer our players on! Food and refreshments are
provided by the Parents' Association; a $5 donation is
suggested.
PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary
SAT/National Merit
Scholarship Qualifying Test):
Registration for this test
occurs in adviser room. The
PSAT/NMSQT, taken nationwide
by high school juniors,
is a useful indicator of
Co-chairs Mary Alice Lyon
and Kris Fishman
scholastic aptitude as well as
the basis of some merit scholarships.
Open Lunch: New Trier has a closed campus/open lunch
policy. Juniors and seniors, with parental permission, may
leave campus during their lunch period. (If they have two
lunches, they are only allowed to leave for one lunch period.)
To give their students permission to leave campus during lunch,
parents must go to Room 200 in person to sign a permission
form. Note - permission is for leaving on foot; they are not
allowed in cars and will be suspended if they do enter one.
NTPA Class of 2012 Board enjoys a get-together and cake walk last spring.
Career Development Program: Did you know that careerplanning
services are offered to all students at New Trier?
The program provides students with counseling services, stepby-step
self-analysis and career exploration designed to complement
the work of each student's adviser and post-high
school counselor. Interested juniors can stop by Room 230
(adjacent to Post-High School Counseling) and visit with
Career Development Coordinator Susan Thorngren.
