Undergraduate Medical Education and Skills Bus
We are delighted to announce the following
additions to the Undergraduate Team: Dawn Bell,
Medical Education Pharmacist and Tim Strang as
Consultant Lead for Simulation. We would also
like to thank Mehvosh Akhtar, previous Medical
Education Pharmacist and MAU Consultants, Mark
Holland and Ollie Gaillemin,
who were two of our star
teachers. The team and
students will certainly miss
them and wish them well for
the future. We are in the process
of employing Richard Jones
to take over Ollie’s additional
role as Undergraduate Lead
for Year 3 Medicine and Nutrition, Metabolism and
Excretion Module. In addition, we are appointing
Jon Ghosh as Undergraduate Lead for Surgery and
will be recruiting to the post of Staff Development
Lead very soon. For the administrative team, we
are short listing for the post of
Undergraduate Coordinator for
SSCs/Data to replace Miranda
Swift. We had a successful Annual
Review visit by NHSNW and
Manchester University Medical
School in February 2012 and
have also had excellent feedback
from our quality assurance
visits in relation to the Year 5
Student Assistantships, which became a formal
part of the medical course last academic year.
Since January, our mobile skills tutor Rachel
Matthews has delivered 15 training events both
on site on the Skills Bus and at GP Practices across
Manchester for Basic Life Support. In addition,
she has delivered First Aid Courses both on site
in ERC and at local primary schools. The Skills
Bus once again attended Baguley
Hall Primary School for Science
Week. We are now in the process of
providing additional skills teaching/
revision days for our medical
students across Years 3-5 when
on placements at Leighton and
Stepping Hill. The Skills Bus will
be supporting Trust runners in the
Greater Manchester Run. Following Tim Strang’s
appointment, we are now able to concentrate
more efforts on our development of Hi Tech
Simulation Learning. We are very keen to increase
the use of our iStan Patient Simulator to promote
the use of hi tech simulated learning
to all our colleagues at UHSM and
would welcome enquiries and
offers of help for clinicians, nurses,
ODPs, AHPs who would like to know
more about the use of simulation.
In the future, we hope to arrange
“Demonstrations” and “Training
Events” which we will advertise
via the Daily Bulletin. Marylyn

Clinical Skills Bus Charges

Hire of Skills Bus and Driver 1 day £350 (An additional milage Please enquire for ancillary equipment which
(including UHSM staff) cost may apply outside of the GM area) may be made available at additional cost
First Aid at Work 3 days £214 per person HSE registered and complies with First Aid
in the workplace regulations
Emergency First Aid at Work 1 day £66 per person HSE registered. This course covers the basics required to
provide emergency treatment in the work place.
First Aid at Work Annual Refresher Half day £50 per person This course provides an update to the full
3 day First Aid at Work course
First Aid at Work Requalification 2 days £139 per person The requalification course can be completed when the
3 year full First Aid at Work certificate is due for renewal.
Paediatric First Aid 2 days £139 per person The paediatric course follows Ofsted guidelines
for those working with children
Parents First Aid 3 hours £30 per person This course covers the First Aid basics for parents of young children
